    I'd love for you to do a video with a disabled or chronically ill person in the fitness industry about ableism in the space. Sometimes talk like this feels like it really doesn't take into consideration that not everyone is abled. Like, when I just do pilates it's because it's all I CAN do, and it HAS to be enough.

      I teach Pilates because it is all I can do! I have 2 Autoimmune diseases and struggled with my job.
      My friends told me to quit due to their concerns for my health but, I got back up again and I'm going back for my second certification training. I've cut back on some things and made it work for my personal needs.
      Never give up, there are always things you can do for you to better your fitness goals around chronic illness.

    I hate when people, and especially influencers, are like "here's what works for me, so it will work for everyone the same way" implying that when it does not work for someone it's their own fault. We are all so different and genetics is always the biggest factor 😩

    I started strength training when I was 15 after a doctor recommended it. I had scoliosis, and he thought it would be good for me to make my body stronger. I have seen workout trends come and go over the years, but I have always stuck by basic strength training. And it's not lifting barbells and the heaviest weights to look like a bodybuilder, it's just lifting a set of dumbbels or a kettlebell that gives me enough resistence. That's it. I'm 41 now, and I still strength train, because it's the thing that has changed my body in the most positive ways (people are always amazed at how strong I can be, since I'm a small woman). I have tried other trends, too, but I have never abandoned my strength training. I wish more women would try it and not be so afraid of it. It does WONDERS for your body if you are able to do it.
    I also walk everywhere, because I enjoy it. Walking all over town with my headphones on and listening to cheesy pop music is my favorite way to get cardio. People shouldn't be thinking it's going to get you six pack abs, though, because if it could, my abs would be ripped by now, and I can assure you they are not, lol.

    I agree with all your points in this, but I wanna add on that sometimes with the busy work schedule, it can be overwhelming to plan out: Oh I need to do 1 pilates day, 1 cardio day, 1 strength training day, etc etc to get all the benefits. I like to remind myself that it's ok to stick to one thing at a time because I have THE REST OF MY LIFE to try out all these movements. So in the weeks or seasons that I want to stick to certain workouts (currently my faves are mat pilates and sculpt) then I lean towards those classes more. Being able to excercise in and of itself is already joyful, I hope more people'll see that instead of blindly chasing the vague idea of a method that "works" 😅

      It's overwhelming for me to think how to plan out every type of exercise I am supposed to fit in. I struggle with depression but also have a work schedule that is not always 8-5. It can change at the last minute. Getting some kind of movement done is a success some days. Most of the time I can fit in some sort of pilates or barre type workout a few days a week. I have started adding in a bit of free weights (did strength more regularly when I had access to a gym), but now am nursing a shoulder injury. Sometimes a good run is just what I am in the mood for, so I'll wake up and decide that is the day's workout.

      I don’t think the idea she presenting was to do all forms of training at once. Its a bit more like what you just said: emphasizing a certain area of fitness or activity in your regimen, only it’s best to not completely eliminate all other forms of fitness for just one. For instance, if you decide you want to focus on running, it’s probably not best to completely abandon the strength training and stretches you did before. Still run, but save a little time and energy to maintain those other areas of athleticism. However I can understand how hard it can be to keep such a balance without knowledge or having a coach. At the end of the day, though, you are right: comes down to enjoyment, convenience, and what you feel most driven to do.

    Totally agree, even as an instructor I would never tell ppl to only do Pilates 🤯 and for many of us, to say “do Pilates and you’ll look like me” is so misleading.. when you’ve lifted for 10 + years prior to doing Pilates, that muscle base totally influences how we look now, even if you mainly do Pilates now!

    As someone that lost a good deal of weight the last year and a half I get a lot of comments, compliments and questions at work. Like what are you doing? And as simple of an answer as eat smaller portions and working out almost daily they seemed annoyed or distrusting that only that worked. No magic pill, no specific diet, not waist trainer none of that crap. I don't even consistently intermittent fast. All the things my female coworkers have been told they have to do or try to lose weight. And if they do believe me the truly believe that it wont work from them since they're not in their late twenties like me. Which upsets me more and more since most of my twenties was spent over weight. it didn't come off "easily" because i'm young it came off with dedication, hard work and time. It didn't happen over night it took almost 2 year, which is something else they never want to hear they want to hear do this thing or eat that for a month and you'll get to size 4...

      @@SamanthaLopez-1994 mostly I did breakfast lunch a snack and dinner. Sometimes the snack would be between lunch and dinner after work like fruit. Sometimes it would be a snack after dinner like greek yogurt and fruit. I tried to eat as much whole foods as possible. If I tried to do 5 small meals a day I think I'd get overwhelmed trying to plan that since I work in an office 8-430.
      Most days I bring a protein bar in case I get hungry before 12p or ill bring oatmeal with fruit and a scoop of protein powder to eat at my desk. I'm not strict at all. If I wake up early I'll make egg breakfast sandwiches for me and my husband.

    Keep strength training, women! Nothing beats the feeling of your husband offering to help you lift something and being able to tell him you can handle it yourself. Then the look of amazement when you lift that heavy something without breaking a sweat.💪💪💪

    I have came across many people who believe that working out is useless and just walking is enough, usually when they see some news that a person passed away while working out at the gym.
    People just jump to the conclusion that it was the gym that killed the person, working out is dangerous, just walking is enough, etc.
    Glad you brought this topic up and hopefully it clears some negative notions people have about working out.

    I don’t think it’s a big mystery what’s going on. Hailey Bieber is the new body ideal; increasing muscle mass does not fit that body ideal; we are going back to “working” meaning “be as small as possible”

    The body trend of being curvy and muscular has given way to super thin, super lean bodies. I'm scared, because I know how many women (and men!) have developed eating disorders and body dysmorphia and self hatred because there is only one body shape that is shown at a time in our media, myself included. I am still struggling with the knowledge that I have messed up my metabolism and may never be lean enough to run as comfortably as I used to. If there was one thing that worked, more people would have bodies with the exact aesthetic they want. Thanks for this, your channel is always a place that is pretty safe for me as I attempt to recover from the years of diet mentality and too much exercise I have put my body through.

    I get the comment about not taking into account disable people, but for people who can do everything... I totally agree with you! I sometimes have to tell myself to stop and rest, some times I reduce strength training because it gets me to bulky and stresses my body too much (the inconvenient of being a bit too enthusiastic), then I dance, walk, garden, do housework, move, like you've said before, move!! I am 53 and maybe I have good genetics, but what I've done, unlike many people I know, is to keep walking, keep dancing, do strength training, do gardening... none of these things keep me fit, all of them (and not obsessing with any) keep me fit... And happy!! I work more efficiently in the office, I use less petrol, I cope with menopause better, I am sharper because of that variety! I would not be this way without it. Thanks for your wonderful rants!! 😍

    Yes! This drives me insane. And even this far into my fitness "journey", where I've found a routine that I enjoy and makes me feel my best, I'll STILL second-guess myself the second I see an influencer saying "stop doing THIS exercise and do THIS one instead". Eventually I've come to realize that when an influencer says something doesn't "work", they generally mean it doesn't make you efficiently lose weight or achieve a certain long-lean physique. Sure, running isn't the most "efficient" form of cardio. But it makes me feel awesome, gives me a sense of accomplishment, and keeps me motivated to move. I also lift weights, because I enjoy it, love the health benefits, and like looking strong. If I eventually have to swap one of these out for something that works better for my body, mind, lifestyle, etc., I hope I can do that without feeling guilty for not doing the most "effective" thing possible.

    YES, thank you for making this video! Loved that you stressed that it’s about balance and moderation. I do group fitness classes with some of my friends for the social aspect of it, but it’s frustrating to hear them + other people walk out of a class saying it “wasn’t that great” because it didn’t *seem* intense to them and they didn’t work up a crazy sweat. Not every workout has to be intense, not every workout has to make you drip sweat for it to be effective and progressive! People also need to stop thinking that if they’re not sore the next day, they must not have worked out hard enough. If your workouts are so intense that you’re sore ALL the time… (cups hands over mouth) THAT ISN’T SUSTAINABLE, DEREK.
    I also have friends on the opposite spectrum who only walk or do bodyweight training because they’re afraid the MINUTE they pick up a dumbbell they’re going to look SHREDDED. (How I wish it were that easy lmao) Literally had a coworker tell me last month that she doesn’t want to touch any weights because “[she’s] a dancer, so [she] doesn’t want to have muscles.” 😑 Haven’t been able to convince her that: 1.) everyone has muscles, and 2.) DANCERS. NEED. STRENGTH. TOO. (She also weirdly believes that she HAS to exercise outdoors because she heard you burn more calories being outside. ??????)
    Anyway, maybe one day we’ll get creators praising the effectiveness of balance and moderation when we finally get 80-100-year old content creators/influencers. 😅

      Omg yes! I used to go to a Pure Barre studio and people would quietly diss the instructor after class if the workout wasn’t “hard enough” or if they didn’t “shake enough” during class. I was new to fitness when I started going and was always so sore and achy after each class. I ended up canceling my membership due to the cost, and since then I’ve gotten in the best shape of my life just by doing strength training at home with dumbbell workouts and running. My body feels so much more energized and I typically don’t experience much soreness after workouts. It’s so important to find what works best for you!

    Really appreciated hearing your thoughts! Your thoughts are actually super relevant to me... I was training with a heavy emphasis on growing my butt, but I eventually got sick of it, and I felt like my butt didn't look good... so, I started doing whatever I wanted to do, which has ended up being much more balanced, and I noticed lately that I really like the way my butt looks! But I couldn't tell you what actually made that change, lol?!?
    Overall, though, I'm happier with what I'm doing and the way I'm feeling, but I feel like I could definitely be someone who could spin a "I did what I wanted to do in terms of exercise and my butt looks better than ever! 🤪" narrative. It's wild how easy it is to attribute a change to something that you did, when in reality, you have no idea what actually made that change!!

    I love pilates for stability and proprioception but I also know it isn't enough. I'm 27 and I got diagnosed with osteoporosis and I'm using weights into my exercise (right now it's only 10 kgs) but I see that it has much a huge difference.
    Also Justina your hair will love the curly girl method

    I needed this video. I just cut back HARD on weight lifting because my body wasn't handling it well and I could have either been caught in the trap of "oh, well all I need to do is walk and I'll get abs" or "alright now I need to jump back in to my old bad schedule or I won't be doing what I'm supposed to"

    when you try to decide what kind exercise you're gonna do, what matters the most is, what kind exercise you like the most. your exercise should be fun. if it's like a torture, you can't do it for long period time.

    I did some quick but effective weight lifting moves while listening to you. I loved it when you said how it’s not that simple but it can be. & it is true! There so much marketing thrown in our faces all the time that we start one direction with something and something shinier comes along so instead of trusting the process and keep going we switch to something else because that must be better, and then we keep doing that over and over and its no wonder we dont see “results”

    Definitely have been seeing an increasing trend of demonising strength training for women. Don’t know why but youtube keeps recommending videos of influencers going “oh I used to lift weights and now I only do pilates and I look my best” 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Like you said balance is the key

      YES, and I hate that it preys on women's fears of looking "too masculine" when it's like, you will not look like a competitor for Mr Olympia without deliberately taking something to get that specific physique. Just lifting weights is not going to have that impact.

      I've never seen anything like that 😯 but I follow a lot of female powerlifters, Olympic lifters, etc so I see kind of the other extreme end of things.

      I also find it strange that they don't realize the years of weight lifting contributed to how they look now. I'm not an expert but I'm guessing the average person that hasn't done much exercise in the past few years isn't going to achieve that look with just pilates and walking.

    All trends are circular 100% agree! I have been a RDN for (gulp!) 21 years and the same diets are recycled every few years. You have helped me see the same thing happens with fitness. I have learned to stay in the middle with all of it. For most people this will lead to a healthy life!!

    Love love love this! Also all the f bombs cracked me up. Girl, I completely understand where you coming from. With there not just one thing that works. A balance of everything is the way to go! Walking is awesome, lifting is awesome , cardio is awesome, mind and body is awesome and so on! It’s like you said a lot people just focus on Looks (nothing wrong with it ofcourse) but it should be beyond that! Also the I am from philly but live in NYC CRACKED ME UP CAUSE YOU KNOW I UNDERSTAND THIS! what I basically got from your video is just have a balance. 😊

    100% agree, as usual, Justina. I haven't seen this TT video but it sounds like I would have mega-cringed if I had. As soon as someone says "this works period" or "I did this, do this to get the same result" and is saying this to a massive audience, my bullshit detector going bonkers.
    Also, fun drinking game: Every time Justina drops an f-bomb, do a shot. 💕

    I agree 100% with your rant! 😀 Everything you said is spot on! Wow. I also find this to be true with nutrition. I have just come off a plant based diet of two years and I am trying my best to find balance. There is more than one way to eat healthy but I got caught up in one way. And it wasnt working for me.

    I appreciate your candor. I have been working out for a long time and there is no magic bullet. I remember seeing ads for muscle building in comic books as a kid. Yes, I am old enough to remember the 90 pound weakling getting sand kicked in his face.
    Balance is what’s needed most. And common sense. I can always count on that from you!

So any time I've filmed a whole workout for RUclips and then forget to turn on the mic or push record or .... *the list goes on*.     So much yes. I have two thoughts to share. I have this approach with food, I live with my family so I don't get to choose all the components of my meels all the time. I go for the optimal choice in a situation and that has to be good enough. Secondly, I strength train with a barbell because I love it (I then do dumbell and kettle bell work). Currently my mom is trying to be better about her physical health, so her form of exercise is walking but that's because that's what works for her. Some people would try to tell her that's not enough and she *needs* to spend that time doing a strength workout except my mother feels better on days she has that walk outside. Basically, everyone has different needs.

    It comes down to using a too narrow definition of what “fit” means. Is someone who can do a sub 20min 5k but cannot do a single pull up “fit”? - yes for one aspect of CV fitness but no for strength. Fitness is multifaceted - strength, power, endurance, mobility, flexibility, coordination - all count towards someone’s fitness. Also, “sicular” is definitely a real word now!😂😂😂

    ive seen similar tiktoks where they say theyve had better "results" from pilates/walking than other forms of exercise. and i always wonder...what do they mean results? usually theyre talking about their physical appearance. what about working out for overall physical and mental wellbeing? feeling strong? being able to do daily tasks well? the results oriented mindset with working out is so weird to me

    Is the Pilates enough for cardiovascular health? That’s what I hear. We need muscle mass going into old age for balance and fall prevention. And we need heart/CV health. We need both. Anyone telling you only do one or the other is wrong. You nailed the USPSTF recommendation for moderate-intensity aerobic exercise. Walk! But walk fast enough to get your heart rate up and be good for your heart. And “fast enough” is going to vary person to person. That’s fine!
    Sorry. I, too, had to rant for a moment. So few of my patients will exercise. I don’t know how to motivate them.

    People SUCK at nuance on the internet. If Pilates is the thing, then everything else is THE WORST. If strength training is the thing, then walking is GOING TO SEND YOU TO AN EARLY GRAVE. It's ridiculous.
    Also, you are bang on about it being simple but not simple. I would phrase it as simple, but not *easy.* Like, it's not complicated, but it can be *hard* to do consistently. People would rather buy the lie that it's as easy as "do Pilates/walking and get abs in 3 weeks" instead of the simple, but much harder, truth that you need to exercise balance in fitness and eating...for the rest of your life.

    Facts!! It's all about balance and variety, thank you for sharing this. As a Pilates Instructor that refuses to speak about weight, (because I got caught in the marketing trap of more is better and felt terrible) I make it my mission to preach balance and help other women with PCOS (like me) to shift from these intense workouts and focus on a variety of workouts (pilates, resistance, strength and cardio), Plus Nutrition, Supplementation and Lifestyle (sleep and stress). I agree, It can feel so frustrating talking about balance in the fitness industry when the next person is marketing Pilates for Abs (which is not going to be the outcome for everyone) because of lifestyle, nutrition and Genetics. Thank you for sharing the sciences of workouts and mindset 👏😃

    👋 I agree with majority of your opinion and I follow your channel for the scientific aspect that you take the time to study and bring to us from a Certified Professional. I really want all Fitness Professionals to be more inclusive, because there are invisible disabilities. I have family members who their illness is triggered by daily life movements, walking, change in temperature etc. It is my mission to me as a Certified Fitness Instructor to ensure my fitness activities for clients is inclusive 4 EVERY body

    makes me laugh at how ignorant that influencer is to think walking was some magical solution 🤣 She had a nice body to begin with but was overdoing exercise so that when she finally took a break and just walked her body felt safe enough to drop the extra fat and her abs could show. Not that complicated.

    Hey, maybe this is a stupid question but I was wondering, when you talk about pilates, what do you consider to be "pilates"? I see so many different takes on this and I'm a little confused because I've started working out a few years ago and I did start with bodyweight pilates stuff (I used to do some of Blogilates work outs but also Fitness blender and some other content creators) but I've now moved on to work outs with a bit of equipment (mostly weights and bands) I work out from home so I don't have access to a ton of different weights and machines not do I have the money to invest into it right now which is why I kept on doing the same type of work outs, only adding resistance, adding weights (I also do a few of your videos which I enjoy greatly even tho I don't lift as heavy as you do obviously haha) essentially trying to make it harder for me. I always hear how pilates isn't enough to train in an efficient way so I was wondering basically, is what I'm doing only pilates, or is it considered more complete because I add up weights and so on, even though I am not actually lifting like super heavy stuff?
    Great video as usual, absolutely agree with you, I think much like everything in life the key is balance as you said, and also accepting the fact that human beings are just so unique and different, you can't expect one thing that worked out for that person to be working out exactly the same for you, that's just not realistic and I feel like it creates so much frustration and toxicity, it's great to see content creators like you debunking this.

      Hey! So I can't necessarily say what I consider pilates. But if someone isn't a certified pilates instructor, I don't consider them to be a credible source. It takes MANY MANY hours of training and experience to get certified, and a lot of these creators (like Blogilates) aren't actually pilates instructors. If you're looking for true pilates, I'd check out Margaret Elizabeth!

    Do you think calisthenics can provide enough resistance for strength training. I miss lifting weight, but don’t really have access to that right now. Just got cleared to workout after delivering 5 weeks ago but still mostly at home with Baby.

      Hey! So if you’re looking for strength training, no calisthenics is not going to give you the same result. BUT you just had a baby. Most people aren’t cleared to begin working out again until minimum 6 weeks post delivery. I would focus on pelvic floor activations and breath work right now. I’m about 2 weeks out from finishing my pre and post natal cert from PROnatal and feel super confident in this rec 😊

      Thanks! I’m not expecting the intensity or results that weights can provide, but hoping to keep what strength I still have. But also, yes, definitely easing into it with pelvic floor work, breathing, and gentle yoga when someone else is watching the kids.

    I think it depends on the resistance you put. My mom is 70 yrs and NEVER workout, but she walks and she cleans the house /do farm chores and gardening every day. She's more fit than many 30 yrs that i know.

      I think I said it in the video, but strength is relative. Meaning that heavy enough resistance to gain the results of muscle growth is different for everyone. BUT just because someone looks fit or moves a lot, doesn't mean they have gained the benefits of strength training.

    Have you or could you go into more details about the Plant based eating phenomenon? Is it really healthier? I joined a group and it was full of shaming people who weren't 100 percent on board . I obviously left it immediately but it messed with my mindset in the time I was there.

    what if you do things like mat Pilates with 1-5kg dumbbells, weighted balls and bars 1-4kgs, resistance bands into Pilates routine ranging from 5-10kg in resistance and then throw in reformer here and there and 1 day Kettlebell training?

      @@JustinaErcole I want to lose weight but I am fully aware that's all to do with my plate and not my choice of movement, I know having muscle helps not have such a small amount of calories to eat since my body will burn more at rest with higher muscles to fat. So will adding dumbbells and weighted balls etc in that amount (1-5kgs) to my pilates be enough "Strength" like is there an amount of kg resistance that actually counts as strength training for they make 1kg dumbbells to what like 50kg dumbbells, what would you say would count as resistance training? I want the benefits for the bones and my old age since I am turning 30! I want to make sure with the time I have being a mum I train smart! Would I be best off doing traditional training and having my pilates for a fun outing/movement.

    tbh, i think the way weight lifting was advertised, especially heavy lifting, is what put people off from it. many weight lifting workouts that have been shown have all been 45 minutes or longer. and, going to the gym and having all the same equipment is not always realistic, and it’s hard to know which exercises can replace which. finding your channel was so helpful because i realized i don’t have to lift heavy to see results, and i liked the “functionality” of it. so many fitness influencers (influencers in general) talk in extremes, so i think people feel like they really only can lift heavy or it won’t be worth it. and i have heard people say that if you don’t exercise x amount of times, you won’t see ANY results, or if you don’t lift heavy, it’s not worth it
    edit: ah i got to the point in the video where you touch on this. this is such a necessary conversation!

    I am with you content wise and i think i understand why you can get so frustrated with these influencers. I personally dont watch them and i know they will not be good influence for me.
