    Basically it’s a long Allen wrench with a handle on it. At my Mothers funeral the funeral director let me lock the casket before leaving for the church.

    Informative! About a hundred years ago, a similar handle was used to start your car. Can you imagine hand cranking a car in heels? Lol.

    We have a couple of those crank style keys at St. Agnes Church in Fowlerville but they are only about a quarter of the length of yours. They all work the same, as it doesn't have to go in that far, however, yours is much easier to use because of much more leverage. Basically, a 5/32 of an inch hex key that works a device really similar to a bench vise that a lot of us have in our garages, basements, or workshops.

    People are watching because they're curious. They have a right to be. Caskets (with a body in it) are the focal points at a funeral. Sealer caskets have a greater eye appeal. The materials and construction is nicer. Families like to entertain the thought that their loved ones have security and privacy in a sealer casket. For some it's a status symbol. The thought of having a loved one placed in a dark & damp environment for eternity is hard for some to envision. Sealer caskets are not locked when placed in cargo compartments of planes. I was told the air pressure would buckle a sealed/locked casket upon descent. After casketing, keys are usually kept under the pillow so the funeral director won't fumble looking for it at "the opening/ closing." On some upscale models the bed of the casket would also tilt for better viewing. I'm sure the head of the bed still raises/lowers using the key. Extra perks to buying a sealer casket. I remember this from my days working in a mortuary so long ago.

    Some non gasketed caskets have an endlock or front lock too. It's not ONLY gasketed units. the cap that you removed is called the endlock or front lock cap. The overlay is the part that you take out of the casket and place over the foot end of the top. the fabric that stays attached to the casket is called the throw out because it.... uh... throws out....those are the correct terms....Only matthews still makes the front locks now.

    What are the other silver knobs at the end of the casket for? I’ve seen them on some caskets (like one on each corner).

    • @nevadarohel3207
      @nevadarohel3207 4 года назад +3

      The other knob reveals a "Memory tube,” which is a small glass tube that screws into the casket. In the event that something should happen to the casket (should the casket become dislodged from its space in a mausoleum or crypt, or unearthed from the ground), the identity of the deceased can be easily known without having to exhume the remains.
