I was a student hitchhiking in the south of England and I heard this as a lift drove along a sun-dappled, tree-lined avenue.
I am now 68 years of age and recovering from surgery for cancer having taught delinquent lads.
I was privileged to be one lad’s best man at his wedding as he made a success of his life.
Unfortunately I stood at the graveside of one lad who was out of reach and took 8 bullets to the chest.
I have been privileged to have been a member of the finest profession on the planet and this tune still provides the wonderful soundtrack to my life.
    Thank you, Curtis

The real ones like me (and I'm 27) had uncles and aunts who constantly played timeless records from Curtis Mayfield, Barry White, Lisa Stansfield, Neneh Cherry, Aretha, Etta James and so many more. I've literally known about Mr. Mayfield since I was 7 years old, since on our road trips from Florida to my house in Jersey, all my uncle would play is those timeless old school records. Curtis, Barry, Etta (she's also one of my favorites), and so many more. I was raised right, since all I listen to is music from the '40s all the way to the '90s (I was born in '96). They do NOT make talent like Mr. Mayfield and his contemporaries anymore - take notes, young people!

"Move On Up" is a song by Curtis Mayfield from his 1970 debut album, Curtis. Nearly nine minutes long on the album version, it was released as a single in the United States, but failed to chart. An edited version of the song spent 10 weeks in the top 50 of the UK Singles Chart in 1971, peaking at number 12, and it has become a soul classic over the years. In 2021, it was listed at No. 474 on Rolling Stone's "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time."

David Hurt You're hurt, I get it, but why post this here? Putting your grievances and those of the Palestinian people squarely on the shoulders of Israel is inane. If you don't know the history, I suggest you learn quickly before cutting in the middle. You act as if Israel is living in some, quite, peaceful suburb of happy town U.S.A. As far as the children are concerned - again, you offend me. I am a praying man and it's peace in the middle east that I do so. There's been long suffering and displacement for both peoples going back thousands of years - or have you conveniently, from your high horse, decided to ignore that fact? If you want to continue this, we can, but pick a different page as this one is for music lovers of a historic and classic genre.

My mother used to play this song to me a lot when I was young. I never understood the meaning back then. Until I found out why my own upbringing had been so rough. She was physically and mentally abused by her parents in the most brutal of ways, as were her siblings. Now here I am 2 years after she died and the lyrics finally make sense. I didn't have it that bad....she tried to move me up..in her way.
