There is a great dynamic between you two for this series
The witty amateur, always cracking jokes and going on a tangents.
The somewhat dead pan pro who’s focused on what he’s there for.
Somehow I get a feeling you will rub off on each other across this series.
Rollie may start to take things a little more seriously and your coach slip into your humour from time to time.
    Best of luck.

As a psychology student i like him adressing your mental attitude indirectly while coaching you. Always mentioning positives before critizing, and makes sure to affirm your strengths. As a pool player I can also tell you, you should have quite some confidence in your game. Of course it's intimidating playing with pro's but you will be there for a reason. So try to work on the table on your game, but of the table on not talking yourself down all the time, you have developed quite the good game!

the more you talk about what you dont want the bigger it gets.
Instead of focusing on the validation you might get of winning against a pro you should be focusing on what puts you in a good mood. If i dont feel good i just focus on my breathing or i imagine myself potting balls. If you do this over and over again your body as your subconscious mind doesnt know the difference between whats going on on the table and what you are imagining

"But we're training right now, so it's not a foul."
Man, I'd been enjoying this guy's teaching up to this point (his tendency to compliment before critique, his thorough explanations, etc), but this is the line that really stuck out to me. Just a great way to focus and to keep track of the fact that training is so that you don't commit these mistakes when it *matters* - because it doesn't right now.
Great vid as always, Rollie. Keep it up and good luck at the Open.

Hunter is a great coach, been watching him play since he was a teen! I've seen first hand the transformation effect he has had on quite a few players here in SFLA, making average pool players with a little skill 1-3 balls better after a couple sessions. Don't think you can go wrong with that choice in coaches Rollie!!

You can tell Hunter is a perfectionist, going down to the very low-level opposing thumb positioning and cuetip-ball distance technique, which I'm aware are quite important, but he's also imprinting his style of play on you and maybe taking away of some of what makes you, you, as a player. Some of the best players in the world have technique quirks (looking at you Efren) and play a more relaxed and "for fun" game. I wish you get a good result from the US Open, but remember to enjoy playing (remember the video with Eckert). Cheers mate!

    • @Blessed.2.Teach.4God
      @Blessed.2.Teach.4God 4 года назад +1

Disagree, he's imposing techniques that give him the best chance for success.
Sure anybody can do things unorthodox (or even flat out wrong) but that doesn't mean you should train that way.
      Hunter is teaching very well.

'you being you' is when you have the chance to make that choice...can't make a choice if you are stubborn and just want to 'be yourself' (do things as you have always done) and also makes using a coach irrelevant.

This guy is particularly good at teaching. The ability to teach and spot weaknesses is frequently different from the ability to play well. The exception is pedagogy nerds; people who learn to play well by imagining that they are teaching someone as they grow as a player.
I also want to add that I love that RUclips lets me speed on videos, because I don't have the attention span to watch this at 1x. Not a criticism, I just need higher information density, which you can't get from a conversational format.

@7:05 The day before the tournament starts, I think "they" should scuff the new rail cloth with a buffing wheel or something like that, to prevent poorly hit balls from going in. Also, they should "train the table" to avoid racking issues. Draw an outline around the rack. Dampen the rack area, tap the balls in place, then let dry overnight. During the match, place the rack, then load the balls. Do not allow the players to move the loaded rack back and forth.

It seems like it could be a sarcastic remark or something, but I find this little nugget of advice very helpful and useful. It's always good to remind yourself that there is a difference between training during practice and a live match. When you practice, it's to improve and get better. There would be no improvement if there were no mistakes, to begin with, right? Therefore, it's okay and certainly expected that you'd make mistakes during your drills or practice games. Why? Because as a player who wants to improve, you'll take note of those mistakes and do what you can to limit or eliminate them, even if it's a grind.

Or try explaining to a drinking team that plays pool on a valley weekly that the cue ball plays different, then having to explain no it’s not the rails are bad its operator error and the pockets are not only way bigger but also cut easy AF! Especially if the drinking team is already 8 shots (whiskey not pool shots) into weekly match they still wanna gamble you.......for a drink🤷‍♂️ and quit after loosing first bet but still 🗣blah🗣blah🗣blah! The reason most real players won’t even mention knowing the game when at a bar cartching a buzz! Hunter is prime example of this if he’s 5th in country right now, I’ve seen em play and know he’s top notch player but I didn’t even think he was top 100 let alone 5th!

Great video and great display of Hunter's teaching style.
I just have a small concern for you Rollie, that 10 weeks is not enough for him to "tear you down and build you back up" as it were. I think in the long run it will pay off handsomely to improve your fundamentals, and you'll be a much improved player, but in the short term your game will probably take a hit. On the other hand, he didn't seem to have made a really big change to your routine, so maybe you do have time before US Open. We'll see after next time :) Good luck to you!
Also, I thought that finger tapping was an involuntary tic. I caught myself doing it several times and it was completely subconscious. You also didn't seem to have done it on purpose on the video. It might be the brain just subconsciously copying what it's seen other people do or it might be a way that body releases stress subconsciously.

The US open is now broadcast via matchroom sports across the entire world. No pressure Rollie , play it like it means nothing.

No tension in the bridge hand huh. When taking a lesson from Alex Pagulayan the first thing he does is wiggle my bridge and stress the importance of having that solid. Look at pics of Corey Duel bridging, his fingers are contorted from pressing down on the table so much. Who knows though, maybe this is the way of the new.

I am really struggling with getting clean strokes, which is frustrating to say the least. The tips given in this video about the tip-to-cue ball distance and the alignment of the bridge to the line of shot could be very helpful in giving me a more consistent cleaner stroke. Imma try that later!

Reason for the “Snooker Finger tapping” is because of how low they get on the shot, it’s a natural thing when you are locked chin low , but yes you are right coaches do Promote it for better timing.

That guy points out things in such a confident way that he could literally tell me the biggest bullshit ever and I would believe him and do it^^
I like coaches like this. They somehow have this aura that makes you trust them.
