    I have a theory on what his counter actually was in development. It works only on certain types of moves because of its unique animation. I think what happened is during development Capcom wanted to give Gief a counter, however animation for it would be contextual, if it countered kicks it would go into this animation, for punches - arm twisting animation. But perhaps it didn't work out well with designing all the cases for animation and it gor scrapped leaving only this version. What gives weight to this theory is that SFV already has contextual animations, some throws have different animations depending if the opponent stands or crouches.

    • @Hotobu
      @Hotobu 3 года назад +84

      I've thought all along that was the goal for this game. Look at some heavy punches when they're blocked. The animations are different. I think they wanted all moves to be this way, but money and time prevented it.

    • @Kara-de5cz
      @Kara-de5cz 3 года назад +25

      One cool thing would be characters having different throws, depending of the weight / size of the opponent.
      Basically, Ibuki couldn't lift Abigail with her back throw : so in the match up, the throw would be weaker against him.

      @Random Username It's like how Jiren in DBFZ when he first came out had the three versions of shock tornado where I think it worked like: light beats mids and highs but loses to lows, and the medium version only beats lows but loses to mids and highs, heavy version beats all three, and all versions lose to projectiles. Then he had his hand move that would only beat projectiles but lose to any physical attacks.
      So if you ever wanted to use literally any of his counters you had to be 100% sure your opponent was gonna do what you thought they were gonna do, or you were getting punished.

      @@jordanguelbert7754 Except this isn't true. While many characters do have unnecessary reversals, lots of characters use theirs in high level play. Examples are: Jin, Master Raven, Feng, Law, Leroy (because his are broken), Asuka (as you mentioned), Marduk, Geese (if you count guest characters), Bryan and even Lei and Ganryu.
      If we include titles older than Tekken 7, then the list grows longer, with Wang probably being the most infamous example.

    Looking at MvC, I wonder when fighting game devs will realize that counters generally suck, ESPECIALLY if the counter only counters certain attacks. Wesker in MvV3 had three counters for low/med/high and literally nobody ever used them because that's a 1/3 guessing game and why bother with it when you can just block or attack instead? If you insist on giving someone a counter, it better not come with a bunch of restrictions because then it just becomes too risky to even bother with.

    • @BigYellowSilly
      @BigYellowSilly  3 года назад +32

      Super specific counters really are the worst kinds of moves, even if that one in a million chance comes around where it would be a good option, it doesn't matter cause I forget it exists

    • @13thKingMu
      @13thKingMu 3 года назад +8

      Counter can be good if they can counter almost everything like how season 3.5 Jiren from DBFZ,even they can try to counter back at it,he can just vanish back to complete safe and beat all safe option they have included spark and also he can combo after it for free as long you have assist for it. Both mk9 Johnny and mkx Sonya counter super is a example how to make good counter super,they can be cancelable at anytime even opponent try to pressure you,has frame 1 start up so opponent cannot just stop and wait as the animation up unless it's a read,gives you a combo after that which lead alots of damage but they're not broken mainly they're required full 3 bars to use it and if opponent don't press button once you used it,you basically f*cked.
      Overall counter can be good if they're fast on start up and can cancelable or can be a combo extender afterward
      Edit: and also not a specific type of counter since you're going to forgot it unless it has alot of benefit to it

    • @syrelian
      @syrelian 2 года назад +1

      And yet people love Geese Howard's high low mid counters(not to say they're spectacular, but they're liked and decent), there's definitely space for context sensitive counters but they still need to be consistent and worthwhile, the "guessing" game isn't really as bad as you make it out to be when you remember that blocking is already a prediction game for highs and lows, hitting your counter is just a more firm response, tbh its kinda like saying parry in SF3 sucks because you have to read high low and missing is a bad commitment
      This isn't to say there isn't issues with that paradigm for counters, such as whether they fit the rest of the gameplan, Wesker does not need such a button after all, but those issues are significantly smaller than the issues on a move like Tundra Storm, and largely come down to how much reward you get off hitting them and how easily you can go into them
      Its funny, a counter like this should be half decent on Gief, it provides a way of conditioning not to hit buttons you dislike, but the problem is that its just abject garbage with no real payout, so you would never use it for that when just hitting a whiff punish does better

    • @rigelseybert9406
      @rigelseybert9406 2 года назад

      @@syrelian honestly, Geese’s counters especially in later versions are genuinely pretty great. Even low counter can be useful because it sends the opponent full screen so Geese can start his zoning game, and the other two are just nutty. High counter beats basically everything except lows, including specials and supers. Mid counter only beats mid and overhead normals but it gives you a full combo.
      Honestly I think fighting game counters are either really good or really bad, I’ve never really seen any counters that are just alright.

    King’s reversal catches mid and high kicks, but (as would already be obvious to a Tekken player) not knees and not low kicks.

  • @DomingoX
    @DomingoX 3 года назад +3

    This move actually IS moderately useful in a few matches/instances. If you predict Akuma is going to V-reversal, you can actually buffer this move to catch it. If he doesn't do one, the move won't come out. It catches at least 4 different Lucia attacks including all versions of her hurricane, EX included. It catches at least 4 of Cody's attacks, too. Ed, Juri, and (especially now) Nash players love using sobat attacks, which it works against. Sakura, Kolin, and Cammy players also tend to spam HK or MK catchable kicks at medium distance. If you ever land this move or even show people you might try it - you'll see a lot of players totally stop using moves it works against. Still, it's mostly for styling on people and they really should have made it work against Dhalsim's MK instead of just HK. Beating a Dhalsim with this move might be the single best feeling you'll ever get in SF5, though.

    The global nerfs to anti-air jabs in season 3 was so badly thought out. Some characters had slow or upward reaching jabs (like Alex) that have very little utility against a grounded opponent. Instead of nerfing specific anti-air jabs, Capcom just nerfed it globally. And the irony is with Alex, even after the nerf, standing LP was still his best meterless anti-air until they nerfed it further. Capcom buffed Alex every season but the global changes meant that until the final patch, his core problems weren't properly addressed. Your only meterless anti air options were a frame 9 standing HP or frame 10 crouching HP.

    I’ll never understand why they made it so restricted. You could at least have it catch all standing kick moves which is still more restrictive than most counters but gets rid of the weirdness of not being able to grab some kicks

Playing with friends and family is much more fun than online competitive play. Trust me, if you play with your friends and family and other people you know. Especially in person, it will be a lot more fun.

      I’m gonna also tell you an opinion of mine. I think Russian Suplex/Atomic Suplex needs light medium and heavy variants.
      Basically. The stronger button equals the stronger Suplex.
      Light would do the same damage as light Spinning Piledriver and will have the most range. It will also be the fastest.
      Medium would be the already existing one.
      Heavy would do the highest damage. Which would be about as much as heavy SPD. But would be the slowest.

    I am pretty sure you could headbutt fireballs in season 1. See the Zangief launch trailer.
    Indeed I did a lot of Tundra Storm by accident when it was one punch button, and it cost me quite a few rounds, as in SFV letting the opponent once means likely KO. So, unlike what you said, I did not consider the addition of that move as a buff but a net nerf.
    Rarely I would actually throw it on purpose, but it’s in very specific match up like Cammy, Ken or Kolin where the player abuses one good kick button. Arguably it does feel very good when you pull it.
    Other than that the only usefulness is for meter building. It’s quite good for that actually.

  • @internetmovieguy
    @internetmovieguy 3 года назад +1

    Okay no; first of all, 6HP always destroyed projectiles and it used to give 50 meter (which was nerfed mid season one 50 -> 30).
    Second let me explain the point of tundra storm. There are generally three kinds of kicks in the game: low (like Ryu 2MK) mid (like ryu 5MK) and high (like Ryu 5HK). Zangief had a way to beat two of them. He could use 6MK (his hop knee) to beat the low, and use 2MK to beat the high. Now for the mid he supposedly could use VS or 5HP. The problem was that it didn’t always work. For example Ken’s mid 5HK hits below the belt which would crush counter any 5HP from Zangief. So going into the second season they gave him tundra storm as a was to truly counter mid kicks

    • @internetmovieguy
      @internetmovieguy 3 года назад +1

      Of course tundra storm is still garbage and back then it was even worse at the input was 623P which Zangief’s could and often did on accident. So they changed it to PP623 to prevent that. Also season 2 gave Zangief a really good lariet which made him top 4 in some people’s eyes. But since we can’t have Zangief being good they nerfed it. So overall while tundra storm is a joke it did have a purpose.

    Compare this to a kick parry in Tekken 7 like Asuka's b 2+3. B 2+3 is a fantastic move because it is evasive, safe and has decent range. But what puts it further ahead is that it's a consistent kick parry in a game full of great kicks. I just don't see the need for specific limb parries in a game so limited like SF5, or at least to have it be far more rewarding for such a read. Maybe it's good against Karin's poking but that's just asking to get launched by a low imo.
