This is exactly why I kinda hate every novel John Green has written. Like as a writer myself, I think the novels I wrote when I was 14 were better. At least my females were cool.
@@mellowyellow5865 He is an appreciated author and I can see why (I enjoyed some of his books) but his female character all have that "not like other girls" energy and it's just... very cliché. That, and most of them existed only for the male protagonist's character development. I believe female characters deserve better than that.
@@camillesch7297 Yeah… they really do deserve better. It’s all about balancing an independent female and male, who can grow from each other, but still grow on their own (in a straight romance)
I remember reading this one novel (if it could even be called that) called Star when I was rather young, about a new girl who was rather outside the norm for the small town she moved into. However, the key differene was that the male narrator was barely interested in her or even himself, and the story got rather dull fairly quickly. This hypothetical book gives off similar energy.
I feel like y’all missed the fact that the whole point of the book was about conformity. The male character wasn’t that interesting - Because he was an Everyman. He liked Stargirl when the mass thought Stargirl was ‘quirky’, and then he disliked her when the mass thought she was ‘weird’. Stargirl doesn’t fit into these sorts of books because she’s weird/quirky in ways that aren’t like ‘Aw how adorable’, or like ‘I’m not like other girls’. She just… wasn’t like other girls. But at times it was clear the reason she wasn’t was because she fundamentally didn’t understand conformity. As a kid, I think it was my first intro into the idea of neurodivergence and the idea that people can’t be ‘fixed’. Sometimes they’re just happier being who they are. But Stargirl was never a romance novel or anything, and not really a good comparison here
@@sarahweeks8398 yeah. i read star girl in the early bits of highschool. it was my favorite book. it was sad that she was only cool to them when she was fresh and exciting, but then everyone got used to it and then she became an outcast. i felt bad for her, and honestly part of my social anxieties was about this similar concept of not fitting in while also not entirely knowing how to fit in. i would try to be like the other kids around me, but sometimes i would fail and get made fun of for doing what they would do. i should also add that im neurodivergent. it struck a cord and stayed in my mind for years. im glad they made a movie. i havent watched it yet, but i plan on it.
I read it for some reason and was so confused. It just… didn’t have anything interesting about it. It didn’t have a plot, the only thing interesting about it was the mystery about the new girl that just sorta disappeared? It was awhile ago but I still think about that book sometimes just because of how bad it was.
As someone who writes story’s all the time and wants to become an author, I’ve never read anything like this and I’m kinda just staring at it blankly. None of my characters have this type of feel to theme even in more of romance genres
This is why I lost interest in reading as I grew up. I used to be a huge bookworm as a kid, but, as I grew older, the books for my age group just didn’t interest me anymore.
I was the opposite. I had never really liked children’s books. Once I was allowed to read teen books I got really into it reading. I love a good romance, and that’s not usually the type of thing they write for children’s books lol 😂
@@EmilyFitzGeraldYT I’m the exact opposite. I hate romance novels because the plot is boring (If the only limit is your imagination, why mimic reality when we’re already living in it?) and the “romance” is usually toxic. Additionally, I’m a lesbian and there aren’t many sapphic romance novels. A few months ago, I found out that people tend to imagine themselves as the protagonist, which would explain why I find them to be so boring and even somewhat aggravating to read. For me, the story plays out like a movie in my head, and, instead of the protagonist, I’m the person yelling at the screen when a character makes a bad decision.
@@rowan404 personally, I don’t like books that are only romance. I like things that have a supernatural ask plot and have like a romantic subplot. I’m working on a book right now and that’s my main priority is making sure that the store itself is engaging and that the romance is just icing on the cake. I am not gay but I recognize that there are a lack of LGBTQIA romance novels. I can see where you’re coming from
@@EmilyFitzGeraldYT In that regard, I agree, but I prefer sci-fi to supernatural stuff. I’m fine with romance, but only if it doesn’t derail the main plot. Unfortunately, though, there aren’t that many good sci-fi books in general. A lot of them heavily focus on military/wars and I don’t like those. I prefer the ones that use allegories to analyze our own society.
Ik this is late but I suggest reading fantasy and science fiction books. Stuff like Harry Potter, Maximum Ride and Percy Jackson. A little preview: Maximum Ride: Science fiction with a hint of romance and action. Lots of action and humor. Harry Potter: You probably know Percy Jackson: Greek Mythology mixed with modern day events, action and a hint of romance. Not too much just a lil' bit.

i feel like you called out every female character in every john green's books ever. This is amazing!
I respect John Green as a writer, but The quality that I used to worship about him (The odd character quirks) I now see were unrealistic

@@sarahweeks8398 I can't say I missed the point to be honest. I just wish the author made it enjoyable and realistic along the way.

"I'm glad you killed me off because I really don't wanna be in the sequel." LMAO this hit harder then it should!
This is too much, not even gonna start with the background for the casket. I was dying 😂
Opening up with a pun is to realistic.
I'm as deceased as Winter.
Every line in this skit is an absolute banger, I would read an entire novel like this
Good news for you I’m in the process of writing one 😉
