I appreciate this video, great advice on waiting to respond and not taking the bait when people make all sorts of negative comments . Just focus on the issue and remove/ block the person. BTW I have been working in the mental health field for years and ignoring the verbal abuse and focusing on solving a problem saves you a lot of stress (also in real life keep a reactionary distance of 4 feet in case someone takes a shot). I have casually bought and sold on ebay since 1999, I am planning to scale up and appreciate your videos, I agree that not being able to leave honest feedback on buyers is an issue and removes a way to equalize the buyer-seller relationship. Keep making videos, you provide a lot of realistic advice and value.
There also people who buy cheap cards with first class envelope shipping. Tracking does not update to being delivered, but card probably got delivered. And then ask for refund for never receiving it.
Been selling cards on ebay since 1999. There are tons of scammers. Had to quit the hobby back in 2005 due to financial reasons. Just got back into it and alot has changed. Ebay takes a HUGE percentage of your sale now. Its hard to balance out the fees and the fact that everyone wants to low ball you. Buyers practically want everything for free. I recently learned to never sell any card unless its over $30. Shipping costs are atrocious if you ship with a mailer. And ive gotten a few dishonest " i never received my card" buyers when i ship in a regular envelope. Its a shame how the hobby has changed
thats so funny.. i just tuned into your YT channel thinking JMac sounds familiar.. but couldn't recall trading with you on eBay.. the penny dropped in the Whatnot section of this vid, i was watching that live stream (randomly) when you got ganged up on. Everything you said was correct, the MJ cards being hit were high pop, low value cards. I suspect the breaker had no idea what he was doing
I am a small time Ebay card seller and I tend to post in batches of 10 or 20 at a time. It seems like almost every batch I have someone who will not pay. I have in the listings pay in 3 days but I will push it out over a week with a couple of reminders before I cancel. Why bid on something you don't plan to pay for? Very frustrating.
As far as condition goes for cards I never put that in the description or in the item details. I always say scan/picture of card is actual card you will be receiving. Please see photos for condition. Seems to make things a little easier in that aspect
Do you use Variation Listings for your low-end cards? Its a good tool to use since it counts as only 1 listing yet 100s of cards can be listed. Saves $, might be worth a video.
What would Jeff Wilson do? LOL. 2nd video of yours and I like the honesty. PS dont get emotionally involved with the public. Most of them are crazy and highly medicated. Just block them and move on with your day.
I had a similar experience with a buyer who bought a card for $4 then he contacted me saying he found some little flaw on the card. I told him to return it and I'll gladly refund his money. He got all mad, refused to return the card but demanded I refund at least half his money and accused me of being a scammer. I basically told the guy to take a hike and blocked him.
As for the “Mystery Packs” you need to really read the fine print of what you’ll actually win, or the odds of what you’ll actually win, which usually is crap.
As a seller of eBay since 2011, I’ve definitely dealt with situations like these. And it stinks when they come up. But like you said, being professional at all costs while not losing your values is key. Ty for putting out this type of content as it will hopefully help with the cut down of this type of activity in the hobby
I understand about whatnot but not everyone is a scammer on that platform. I break on there. I keep everything on camera and I'm honest. Mystery bags are the absolute worst.
Yep this is true the bad thing is when a platform gets a bad rep it also hurts the honest folks. Never said there wasn’t any good honest sellers, just said that there’s enough scandalous behavior that I have a tough trusting anyone on the platform. An unfortunate reality
I've been selling for about month on ebay. watch a lot of your videos and some others to get a better understanding of the better ways of using ebay as a platform. i've only done buy it nows with best offers available. the best advice i would give anyone using this option, is to set a point where you are comfortable selling at and stick with it. i had a card marked for $50 and a guy sent in a best offer of 30. not where i wanted to be so i countered at 45. he sent back a counter at 31. at that point i knew i wasn't gonna get him to move up much more and to where i would be comfortable selling the card. so i declined the offer. that same day another person bought the card for the 50 and everyone was happier in the end. with the buy it now option, i also make it where the buyer has to pay now. best offer i haven't found that option but i don't ship till the item is paid. also with the best offer option you can set a minimum price offer. i have started to use this more to weed out the lowballers. am i losing out on sales because of that? maybe but i'm not losing my hair over a lot of lowball offers. i've had a person keep putting in best offers until they hit the minimum price offer. so far i've sold 12 items and not a problem. i'm sure i'll run into sooner than later but i think the biggest thing is make sure to communicate as best as you can and try to be understanding. stepping back and not letting you emotions get the better of you is the biggest thing. nice thing is we can do this with computers/phones.
I try to make sure I never receive any negative feedback. I know it sucks, but if something is under $10, I just refund and block. Keep the card, keep the cash, one less problem for the future. It sucks, but it's the only sure way, and if you refund, and he still leaves feedback, ebay will auto remove it
I have been a full-time reseller on Ebay since 1997. The Bottom feeders are the worst. I had a guy beat me down... He ended up getting some great deals. Like $500 worth of stuff for like $50 after the beat down. I had slow sales that day and thought it might kickstart some sales. I was still making money and the items have been in inventory for a long time. So I he beat me down on price then I invoiced him for Exact shipping. Days go by no payment a week goes by and I message from him and he gives some BS story he can't pay. Sometimes I think You and I get more of this type stuff because we are youtubers. Some people want to troll us for some reason. Like you said it could be mental it could be jealousy, but it does happen. I have had more problem with $2 sales than I do with $500 sales. The bottom feeder is always the worst to deal with in my experience.
I had a dude pick out these two cheap cards which I had mislabeled the titles. I listed these when I was just getting into the hobby and didnt understand the what "chrome" and non-chrome was. So he somehow finds the only two that had "chrome" mistakendly in the title and buys them above market value. And then when he gets the cards says hey these are not chrome, what can you do for me? At that point I realized, he was just surfing ebay looking for mislabeled titles hoping I would just give him a full refund cuz the cards are cheap. If the dude had spent just one second to look at the pic, he coulda seen that its not chrome. So I told him, he could return the cards and I can give him a full refund and he didnt respond to me ever again. Prob felt it was not worth his time. Keep in mind this dude had like over 1000 feedback so who knows how long hes been running this scam.
Great video! New subscriber here. Its frustrating when we can't just enjoy the hobby and have to be on alert for fake cards, fake slabs, fake comps... I appreciate you calling this out!
Hi Jmac Tommy here. I just got my ES400II in and playing around with it. When I scan like Mosaic Prizm the chrome comes out dark. have you notice that also and is there a setting fix for that...Thanks again for all the help
Perfectly explained whatnot, weird vibes and shady. Most of the mystery shows are rip offs, sellers can also be rude when they don’t get what they want for their cards, or breaks, just really weird. Big red flag when youtubers continually promote them
As a seller I have considered waiting to leave positive feedback right away, also. Like you were saying most buyers are honest, but there's always those that try to take advantage.
I have had to block buyers on eBay due to not paying and other scenarios. Sad to not be able to avoid these guys. I love the "Undertaker" type background music throughout the video brother!😂 Thanks again for the video, all we can do is keep our own business practices honest!🤙🏻
Thanks for sharing the stories! I'm a big ebay buyer, been buying from the platform since 2000 and JUST started selling. I feel like it's much more difficult to sell than buy, I've never had a bad experience buying (160+ transactions) but have had three "bad" transactions on only 5 cards I've sold. Shill bidding & disrespect, people think you owe them or something, it's nuts!
Its unfortunate that these situations do come up. I had one where I accepted an offer and and after a few hours of searching I could not locate the card. I went to cancel the order and let the buyer know I couldn’t find the card and they instantly went into “oh you ruined some occasion for me, this card was a present, you probably just dont want to sell it for x price.” Tons of f bombs thrown in there too.
A personal addition: Do not accept checks in trade for your cards at live shows! I took a check and got lucky it did not bounce on me. Don’t take a chance like I did!
You (not you but someone) is an absolute fool if they buy into breaks or mystery packs. The hobby is already a gamble with speculation of Panini loading "influencers" boxes, but now you're going to trust someone to give you a good deal on a "mystery" pack or be truthful on what they break?! They literally control the situation. Ask yourself why someone who spends money on cards would give YOU the good deal and not themselves? Its how they can literally re-load their bank account and do it over and over and over again.
I don't get people still buying into breaks/mystery packs on Whatnot after seeing and hearing what is going on there. Hopefully, the good people in the hobby start to call these guys out more and more.
Love your video's.... Your content is always on point. !. What I would do, is start making a black list and keep posting this black list all over the place, and in the end, we can block these cry babies .!. What are your thoughts .?. Deuce out ...
Not a bad idea I just don’t have the time or energy to keep with the bad actors, I just don’t use whatnot as the bad actors seem more than any other selling platform
Really enjoyed your thoughts on this. Unfortunate that with the big money in the hobby, your gonna get these sort of folks sniffing around. You mentioned pausing communication with a customer to ensure you stayed composed. Well done sir! It takes a solid approach to life in general to not respond in kind when faced with insanity. Good will always outweigh bad if we look at things with all perspectives. I’ll be sure to check out more of your content!
Yeah SCREW that dude who left the negative feedback. He has nothing better to do with his life but bottom feed and pinch pennies from pennies. Sheesh! If it was only $1.5 or even $5 and the card had a slight defect then I wouldn't complain. It's not like it was $10 or some larger double digit cost he spent. That's insane.. sadly eBay has become too good to buyers because EBAY doesn't care about it's sellers due to GREED. Plain and simple.. good luck to you man!
@JMac’s Sports Cards it’s very nice to see that your not gambling in the stock market casino sport cards are gambling you have to pick the right rookies in my opinion everything that is sponsored by RUclipsrs has turned out to be a scam just like FTX glad your calling them out
I gotta tell you...been buying on Ebay since early 2019. That dark door can swing both ways. Cant tell you the number of times things take forever (2 weeks) to be delivered. Or are the wrong card altogether. Bought many of colored refractor with the M/NM designation only to receive the card with print lines and scratches not noted in the description or shown in scan.
Always look at the sellers feedback scores before making a purchase. Make sure they have current positive reviews. Stay away if they are negative marks and low sale numbers. The people doing this all the time do not play games.
I've been selling on Ebay since 2005 and most the crazy stuff for me has happened within the past few years. Recently had a Vlad Jr Auto sell on bid and buyer didn't pay (What's new) Next highest bidder said he was interested in card but for $225 which was lower than his bid of $250 which I said I cant do. 10 or so messages later from him I was forced to blocked him and relisted the card which ended up selling and paid for $355 so I guess this worked out in standing firm.
If you show that you offered a refund on return of cards and the buyer refused Ebay is wrong for not retracting his negative. Your not obligated to give the buyer the product plus a refund. Sucks people act like spoiled 14 year old kids in situations like these.
I did have a problem with a buyer and the condition of a card. I started to put a disclaimer in the description of the card.. The disclaimer says this card may have damage to the corners, edges, and surface. This card may be off center too. All transactions are final. Thanks. This is what I put in the description section of the card after I had my problem from a buyer. Thanks for the RUclips videos it helps me with what I want to do on ebay now. Thanks again.
I probably could have fought it harder if I really wanted to, as I put disclaimers in my description as well but with this kind of buyer I just kept it moving.
If there is something obvious messed up with the card then you add that to the description. Otherwise say nothing about the condition. Some people say the card is mint or near mint. Don't say anything. If the card is damaged then you must refund the money. Again block the buyer from future purchases if you think you got scammed.
That was disgusting to see that breaker hide the downtown. This shit has been going on for far too long! Stop supporting shady people everybody! I wish these people that stole hits would get charged for theft, that would put a stop to it also.
Great content as usual. It's a shame lot of shady people everywhere however people like you give good advice to new and/or naive collectors. Good looking out.
You didn't see the silver downtown that I zoomed in on and said "Look here", then the breaker goes off camera steals it and proceeds to come back on camera and the silver downtown isn't there because he took it.
Not bashing whatnot but they need to fix some stuff and become strict. I've had $300-600 hits never shipped to me on 3 different occasions and all whatnot will do is refund you and continue to let the person sell on the platform. Even with all the proof and issued a refund how do they allow them to stay on the platform
Good video. Could we argue the hobby has a large minority of shady actors that take advantage of others? Could you agree that there are equal horror and happy stories that j the hobby? Has the hobby really changed much in the past 3 / 5 / 10 years? WhatNot feeds on people instant gratification to a generation that expect views are a sign of hard work. Mystery packs are scams. Best place to sell fakes trims are in repacks. Keep up the good content Cheers
I don't know if it's ticked up recently, rather that there's more content about it. It seems all the RUclipsrs are posting vids on the same thing, but always be careful!
Right lol, don't want to put them on blast but just make some awareness. I have thought about starting a discord or YT membership where some of that stuff can be shared amongst each other in a more private way, may do it soon.
Why are you wasting Iime selling cards on Ebay for $1.50? For me those either end up in a larger lot or I add them as bonus cards to a larger purchase. I have started using the Ebay envelope at $1.08 postage which the buyer pays for cards under $20. The only issue is the tracking is not very good. The postal service is not scanning the envelope from start to finish. So beware of that. I have already had to refund one person stating they never got their card and a second person came at me with he didnt get his card. Tracking is very good on the more expensive parcels which are around $5 to $6. That is my main area of selling on Ebay. Your video was good but overall I do the same thing when I run into questionable buyers...BLOCK forever.
@@JMacSportsCards You have to list the card, sell the card, print a label, pack the card, ship the card. Lets say all of that takes 10 minutes and you net 35 cents profit. That puts you at an hourly rate of $1.75/hour. My first job back in the 1980s paid more than that. Don't become a slave for Ebay.
The 2 largest card sellers by sales sell cards for 1.50 100s of times a day. I dont sell for anytning less than 1.87, but man you really pay the dollar for shipping? Youre so smart yet you cant figure out to change the weight to 1 ounce so its 60 cents to ship? Also most 1.50 cards dont get bought solo. The buyer will by 10-20 cards from his set hes collecting or for commons of his pc so its bot 1.35 an hour. You should really think from all angles and be better at knowing the entire picture on a topic before commenting
@@saucebaseball4364 yep sold two bulk lots of 20+ cards this week around 1.50-2.50 each. Selling the lower end 1.50+ stuff brings in real collectors to your store and I’ve definitely sold $50+ slabs to folks that came by for a $2 card. So there’s that as well 🤷♂️
@@JMacSportsCards the people who refuse to sell 2 dollar cards are the ones who bought stuff at 300 percent markup 2 years ago and now are leaving the hobby and say its dead lol. I sell at least 25 cards a day

I went to cancel the order and let the buyer know I couldn’t find the card and they instantly went into “oh you ruined some occasion for me, this card was a present, you probably just dont want to sell it for x price.” Tons of f bombs thrown in there too.
Yeah can be some bad apples for sure, overall its all good, the bad ones really do leave a bad taste in your mouth for a couple days though...
Honestly with the guy with the Favre and driver mosaic. No room in this hobby for cheapskates like that
I felt pretty dumb for even selling to him, but hey I got learn my lessons as well just like everyone else...
Some of the mystery packs they charge 250 they say the ceiling is 1500 the floor some of the cards were worth 10 bucks such a scam
Yep avoid avoid avoid...
I never buy mystery packs. Always disappointed. Ask yourself why do you think these dealers are trying to sell mystery packs?
@Ryan Miller is the sweaty gems whatever else they throw in the breaks I've learned my lesson
Unfortunately at card shows I have to check comps myself because people will outright lie about comps. That's one thing I can't stand.
Yo what’s up man, you nailed it today brother.
Cheers!
I'm going to my first card show tomorrow . Hopefully the experience is good. Thanks for the heads up
Hope you have fun at the show! I like to bring only cash so I have my "spending limit", there's always something else to buy!
Great video JMac, hit home as an ebay seller myself
Great info. Thanks Jmac for keeping it a buck! 💯
Hey man! I'm near the Charlotte area...how do I find a list of upcoming shows for North Carolina?
Sports cards digest is a good place to check. Instagram and FB groups as well. Promoters set up at other shows and promote their next shows.
@@lifeofsmac5259 Thanks man!!!
That ebay situation happened to me ebay refunded him n he still has the card over $100 card
If you show that you offered a refund on return of cards and the buyer refused Ebay is wrong for not retracting his negative. Your not obligated to give the buyer the product plus a refund. Sucks people act like spoiled 14 year old kids in situations like these.
Yeah was pretty bummed but just keep it moving!
Way to put up the red flag on Whatnot. You can get sucked in on breaking and if you don’t hit, it can be worse than going to a real casino.
It takes everyone to stick together and get these scam breakers out of the hobby. Keep up the great work!
Graded cards i leave feed back straight away, raw i always wait until ive received positive
great idea.
Excellent RUclips hobby content here folks! 👍🏽
Much appreciated!
If a psa slab, doesn't have psa on lower right, don't touch it.
Yeah man, can't avoid it these days, gotta learn how to navigate safely LOL!
4:30 what happened here, I don't get it?
You didn't see the silver downtown that I zoomed in on and said "Look here", then the breaker goes off camera steals it and proceeds to come back on camera and the silver downtown isn't there because he took it.
@@JMacSportsCards I see, oh my.
That is so crazy, yikes.
I break with rippingwax on Whatnot and Tito is 100% always shipping everything fast and accurate.
Keep up the good content
Cheers
good video. exposing the dark side. the scammy behavior has ticketed upwards lately
I don't know if it's ticked up recently, rather that there's more content about it. It seems all the RUclipsrs are posting vids on the same thing, but always be careful!
Breakers on WhatNot is destroying elements of the hobby to me
Yeah man, so much shadiness going on there.
So can we get the user name so we can block? LOL
Right lol, don't want to put them on blast but just make some awareness. I have thought about starting a discord or YT membership where some of that stuff can be shared amongst each other in a more private way, may do it soon.
Yea it’s bs whatnott is super shady, they gotta be getting a check on the back end.
I got threatened over a 1987 topps Bo Jackson very similar situation. Maybe same guy?
I would not be surprised he WAS BAT SH&$ CRAZY LOL!!!!!!!
You can't leave a negative comment on a positive feedback. It's against policy.
Definitely not a waste of time, but thanks for commenting.
I sell at least 25 cards a day
Reveal this guys username so all sellers here can block
