Thanks, I try my best to provide reviews that are informative and always neutral. The only problem is I usually can't find any problems with Explore Scientific products. They make some really great higher end telescopes.
I own this exact same scope. Pretty happy with it. I have two complaints, the mount base for finder scope is Meade/ES propietary and cannot acomódate standard synta shoes. You will need an adapter for that. The other one I find the focuser a little weak in the tension part I have to focus on a low in the horizon star, otherwise the focus will refuse to stay in place unless locked in which case I cannot focus
Thank you for the review. I am hoping to get one of these second hand. I was wondering if you think it is possible to install an zwo electronic focuser on it? It’s been a long time since they released it so I’m not sure
Slymin, hope this comment reaches you and thanks for the great reviews... I torn between the ED80 FCD100 (they don't sell a CF version anymore, so as best I can tell this new version weighs in at 5.5-7 lbs depending on the website, even ES makes varying claims) and ED102-CF FCD100 (which weighs in at 7.5-9.5 lbs depending on the website, again even ES has different numbers at different places on their own website). I have a Celestron AVX just like you and intend to use a guide scope for auto guiding and astrophotography with my cooled ZWO camera. With the AVX which do you think is a good choice? I've struggled with mixed results with my C8 OTA so I want to lighten the load and go after galaxies and nebula with my focusing being astrophotography. I know the AVX has limits but since you have used both scopes (or at least variants of them) on this mount I hope you can discuss your preferences both in terms of performance with the mount as well as how useful the extra focal range of the 102 is vs. the 80, or if it becomes limiting for some wide field targets. Thanks again!
Would you consider the ES 80mm FCD100 Air-Spaced Triplet ED APO Refractor "better" , a step up? Over the Carbon Fiber? - The FCD100 80mm is not available in Carbon, yet...Would you expect them to release one?
Dude, I wil bow down to your greatness if you can tell me how to attach those 2 short extension tubes supplied with the scope. I can't figure how to attach them. They are too big to attach to anything.
Oh no worries, it is easy. All you need to do is unscrew the ring that the thumbnails are attached too. Once that ring is off you can attach the extension tubes, and then put the ring back on.
I'm new to astronomy and telescopes I have about an $800-$1,000 budget. Do you have a suggestion for a good first scope? I'm looking at a Celestron Nexstar 6 Se. Any input you have would be much appreciated!
That is a great first telescope. The 6 SE is a nice combo between aperture and weight. Since it is lighter than the 8" version it also fits a bit better on the SE mount. If it were me I would try and get an 8 SE if you can though. The extra aperture really helps! If not a 6 SE will be great and you could probably get a couple accessories too. Good luck!
Hi iam struggling moving to refractor from newtonian with dslr I have a douplet 500mm f5 90mm I can shoot in prime so I desided to buy a 2" diaganol and a Baader 5mm modular eyepiece that screws into my dslr I can't get any focusing even when I drop it to a 20mm by removeing end elements have you ever done eyepiece projection bye attaching eyepiece straight onto dslr and into diaganol any Info would be much appreciated thanks kevin
they must of added something to them. there showing 7 pounds in the specs... if true. its only point 2 to 4 less then the orions workhorse 80ed apo metel tube... tho it is not a triplet.
Thanks a lot for this review. There are very fews out there that provide a thorough and well documented video reviews, specially for ES products.

Hi Slymin, I have the Essential ED80. I have to use 3 extension tubes to get focus when I attach a camera to it. Can you comment on this?
I have been using a Celestron travelscope backpacking for a couple of years, this looks like a suitable upgrade?
This. Or. Orion carbon fiber at 480mm focal lenght?

Great review man, very helpful
Great review. Will this provide good images with a larger full frame sensor? I have a Nikon D810 and was looking at buying this telescope.
Nice video, is non-carbon version have same specs??

jory odom I love my 6SE. It’s a great all around scope.
Hay..Check out the stellarvue telescope line...it would be a worth while review especially the new 102 trip and or 80
that IS a finder scope! lol
would also be nice if they could print the label straight.
Yeah, I noticed that the label was crooked as well!
OMG, I didn't see that til you mentioned it. How embarrassing for them.
is the same as the Orion 80ed?🤔
No! I have both. Just look at the specs between the two.

Why don't you give pictures you took yourself?
Space viewed is not "so" colorful.
