Hola Alberto. You've made a beautiful video but then that was guaranteed when you included thousands and thousands of azaleas. When I visited Huauchinango in 1974 there were many people selling flowers, and many other people buying them. Nothing big. It looked like the vendors had grown them at their homes and brought a couple of arm loads to the Saturday market to sell. The market spread over several streets (in my trip log I noted that the market appeared to be bigger than the market in Toluca, which at that time was reputed to have one of the biggest markets in Mexico). Every seller had their goods spread out on a sheet of plastic or a tarp, and some had strung a tarp overhead using ropes and poles, probably to stay dry from the periodic light rain. Entire streets were closed off, with vendors on either side of the street and a narrow pathway in the middle separating the vendors. The ropes and tarps were high enough for the Indians to walk under but I had to duck under almost every rope. I don't recall any elevated stands. Everything was on the ground. The town seems different to me, perhaps more spruced up or something, because I don't recognize anything in your great video. I stayed but for a few hours, since my interest was the market, and then continued on to the convento at Epazoyucan. There were numerous stands along the road near Huauchinango selling honey and either fruit wine or fruit canned in jars, I'm not sure which. Maybe both.
50 years ago there were still lots of women and girls wearing dark blue wrap around skirts held up with a red belt woven on a backstrap loom, a blouse-like huipil and a quechquemitl. Most were barefoot, although some of the younger women were beginning to wear shoes. In 1974 most of the Indian women I saw, from Michoacan to Hidalgo, Puebla, Oaxaca, Chiapas and Yucatan were mostly barefoot, even in cold, rainy weather. Those women were tough. Some of the older women in your video may have been the girls I saw 50 years ago. Some of the men were still wearing the traditional white pantalones, white shirt and serape.
The indigenous women frequently stay with the style they wore as girls or young women. I have a recent photo of a woman from Chamula, Chiapas wearing a huipil in the style I saw 50 years ago. Young women would never wear that old style. In the Wednesday market in Ajalpan, Puebla I saw several women from Altepexi, Puebla. The old women (in 1974) wore a plain white hand woven huipil with a black thread button hole stitch around the neck and sleeve openings. The young women wore a similar huipil, but with embroidered designs covering almost the entire garment. When the old women were young embroidery thread was hard to find, but in 1974 it was readily available and inexpensive, and the young women did not miss the opportunity to express their artistic ability. The embroidered designs are completely different from those done in Tenango de Doria.
How much does a shoeshine cost today? In 1967, my first trip to Mexico, a shine was one to two pesos, depending on the city or town. Mexico City was two pesos. The older church looks like it has a new roof. Not very traditional but it looks okay. The newer church looked amazing with all of the flowers. The parade was interesting, with costumes mostly different from those in the parades in Acatlan or Apulco. I guess you escaped the snow that covered Desierto de los Leones a week or two ago. You probably got some of the cold. I think a video of either Desierto de los Leones or Teotihuacan blanketed in snow would be great. I do have some photos of Tula with rainbows after a rain. Hola to Adriana. Stay well.

Hello William, I'm glad you liked the video and above all that it brought back great memories for you. I like that you remember so many things about my country because that shows me that you really have a special space for it. Today we returned to Huauchinango because in the program the day's activities looked interesting and it was actually very nice, since some colored sawdust mats were made to receive Jesus in his holy burial, which is the saint of the place. There was a light but constant rain but it was very well endured, you will see the following video. The cost of a shoe shine is 30 pesos, still very cheap I think, we took time with Adriana to go again to the place where they sell azaleas and we bought two hehe, one is called satellite and the other I don't remember, I hope they last, We send you hugs friend, God bless you.
