Hi, huge love from HK!❤ always love watching Sean's videos, especially excited to see such a good horror game based on the history of Kowloon Walled City! As someone who was born, grew up and currently living in hk, seeing an authentic and detailed representation of our tiny city and its history is such a gem 💫ngl even rn in the present Kowloon (in fact all across hk) still have buildings like this, with tones of people living in there. If you were to travel to hk and choose to stay in some cheaper options, you could actually stay in buildings like this (not with the bleeding the limbs tho). And they are mostly much cleaner. Just wanna shout out to the game developers for the huge attention to details, and getting them right - the flats' gates, plastic bags hanging near bed, graffiti, electricity meter, etc. are so on point! Just a side-note: if you were to travel to hk, we do have a park called Kowloon Walled City Park 九龍寨城公園, located in the original location of Kowloon Walled City, keeping fractions and some stuff from this part of history.
Yep. I just came back from a 2hr wiki-hole. Wow that was sure something. Read up about the walled city itself, the events that led up to it's construction as well as it's interesting social structure, with it being dominated by Triads who participated in the Opium wars. Go have a look anyone reading this.
Not sure what's keeping me more on edge. The horrors of the unknown around every corner, or when the editor puts in "Fashing Lights Warning". Great game.
8:41 I swear that is a black shadow thingy with eyeballs! Wanted to add: the end game sequence walking through the street of stripped people really gave me the idea that the city's population were hit with white phosphorus.
I played through the game twice, watched 4 other people play through the game, and now I just find out you can pick up the dog food..... Now I wanna know can you feed the cat in the same creators game with the Demonic Elf?
N4ba is such a talented developer. Always manages to capture those claustrophobic environments that make you think you might die if you even breathe let alone move.
@@generalgrievous4254 a comment here explains that Hong Kong was not really governed by China at this point and Kowloon basically had its own government formed over time, one factor of many why it had failed so miserably.

When a jumpscare happens it is in a way a relief of stress and build up. So it upsets me to see that such a popular Horror Game dev still makes cheap jumpscares normal in their games.
Just a little trivia why you see lots of asian things display a toilet on high places in their housing, it's because some civilization areas in asia (especially low economics) are below water level (like lower than the sewer level) so they need to put the toilet higher to prevent water coming out of it because it's frequently flooded.
oh, thanks for the info, I never knew that. Also, weirdly enough, some places do this for no reason. Saw at apartment with a toilet like that in the area with no flooding issues, still confused by the decision
I think the worst part of this is that a lot of horror games give you safe spots, whereas this studio is really good at delivering "YOURE NOT SAFE ANYWHERE" vibes the whole time lol
I genuinely love hearing Sean talk about tea, as a tea lover myself. Black tea all the time with milk, its a nice little similarity to celebrate as I get horrified for the next 30 minutes. Also I love these games, these for some reason more than most, makes me want to learn how to make a game so badly. they are so strategic and effective at building an atmosphere and scares.
I'm always happy when Kowloon gets featured in video games/movies! I did a report on Kowloon when I was in Asian studies in college. Interesting to note is that there were actually families in the "city" trying to live and raise their children despite the crime and gang activity. It wasn't all just demons lurking around corners.
So true! I also wrote a paper on the city in college and I find people often focus on the crime and poor living conditions of the city, but there are always two sides to everything. There were a lot of hard working families just trying to make a living. And a lot of unregistered doctors and dentists!
Any scary games easily frightens BUT if there's a dog in one of the game and the dog gets killed, all that fear turns into literal anger, I'm not kidding. I love dogs the most so I would riot even if I might die.
I normally don’t get that scared while watching someone else play a horror games, but my god these were some of the scariest jump scares I’ve ever experienced. (Connanical jumpscares/deaths is a thing I’ve only seen in like Amnesia games, it’s fire)

I know this is just a little thing, but thanks to the editors for changing China to Hong Kong, no matter the political situation, I appreciate the clarification on it. Love from HK❤
Well, HK is part of PRC since 1999 (unfortunately). But it's a lot more precise to name it explicitly. Calling Taiwan a part of China is much worse though.
Wasn't Kawloon PRC territory though? I mean I'm absolutely all for denying the CCP power and credit wherever reasonable, but technically the sky directly above Kowloon would have, in fact, been "The Misty Skies of China"
This dev is really good at making horror games and what's brilliant is they don't even need to jumpscare you they just need to test your fear with the atmosphere.
I love how i crapped my pants on multiple occasions when im in a well lit room with other people, can imagine being alone in darkness with headphones on 😅
ive never seen a game or movie made after kowloon and im happy one was finally made. the history of kowloon has always fascinated me. the game started off saying the year was 1999, which was puzzling, cas it got demolished around 1994. so the game was even spookier, I loved it! i hope more media covers this topic!
it's not a direct remake of the walled city, but the developers of Stray did mention that they were heavily inspired by kowloon walled city when designing their sci-fi-style city for Stray, so it might be worth checking that out too if you like Kowloon-inspired settings!
The fact I'm all alone in Ireland right now actually tucked under a blanket in complete darkness watching this just makes it such a surreal experience. I genuinely can't move. The game's awesome and Sean's video is too.
I absolutely hate getting scared but horror games are my favorite to watch people play because I can experience a good game without directly being scared so thank you Jack haha

i’ve seen multiple playthroughs of this now & its so funny to see how everyones demeanor changes after the first big jumpscare. i love seeing everyone scared like this again 😂
Could you imagine this game in VR? Having these scary videos being at least over 30 mins has been neat. I hope he plays more soon, this one got me quite a few times, but I liked that the jump scares were there, but not overly done.
So- no one's going to mention that the character appeared to have hung their shelf at the end, watching the tv, dangling above their couch, their vision fading in and out until, hallucinating the ghost from the Kowloon ... black? Fantastic horror game, so terrifying and wonderful stretches of quite ambiance that kept me expecting a jump scare long before one came about.
one of the scariest games in a long time. I often didn't dare to even look at the screen because the atmosphere was so tense. Thanks for playing it, although i only saw a fraction of what was happening, it was fun regardless.
So this was right before Kowloon Walled City was torn down, and they had relocated most of its residents, save for some holdouts. You end up with a claustrophobic place that is nearly empty. Inspired setting. Edit: It actually was torn down in 1994. Guess I should have waited till the end to comment. Still think it is an inspired setting. Would love to see a whole game there. Something that really emphasizes claustrophobia.
I have to say, as someone who used to live in a house and now lives in an apartment, i cant properly experience horror games. I cant fully immerse because I'm subconsciously always thinking of my neighbors and can't let loose and scream when i need to Lol

Little does Jack know that this dystopian hellscape once existed.
I'm only just finding this out myself. The streets of the walled city are horrifying.
Mama mia
It wasn't as bad as this game represents, though. It's played up for horror. Another game inspired by Kowloon? Stray; and I wouldn't call that a horror game 🐈 The biggest real life horror was that it was a fire hazard.
@@mimsydreams - Yep, exactly this. In reality, there was a great deal of kinship and sense of community there despite the abject poverty. The biggest menaces there were probably disease from contaminated water supplies, fire risk and electrocution from shoddy illegal electricity theft.
The room spaces on this game though made Kowloon look "decent". Usually the family space is just a space and that's it. No inner hallways.

Sometimes I just have to wonder how video game protagonists have survived to the current point of their lives. Cause they obviously have no survival instincts.
Protagonists in the outlast games definitely shouldn't and even when they die they still live
@@galaxyvulture6649 In defence of the protagonist of the first main game (not the DLC), he was probably one of the best "survivor" protagonist of all the games I have played. I only know maybe a few protagonist who went through so much hell as him, and it wasn't even his fault that the damn scientist/doctor screwed him up right before he escaped. Man, but can we talk about how pretty this game is? Their last games have looked pretty great for indie games already but this one is really impressive to look at. Imagine if they had a huge team and a budget to really go all out with a longer game, it could be something really special. I hope they keep making stuff and improving!
I have a feeling this was done in Unreal 5. If this is what's coming out just now, imagine how pretty games are going to be in the future! Edit: Finished the video, saw it was Unity. Surprising, the lighting effects looked very close to Unreal 5! Still excited to see what comes in the future!

There was definitely a lot of work being done and guys who did this are definitely talented, but a lot of the environment is actually bought unity asset. Just search for "kowloon unity asset store" and you will find it. A lot of the starting area is actually the same. Still, it's a good work to stitch it all together with custom areas etc.
Craziest thing is that Kowloon was a real place and the photos of it look exactly like this game. Perfect place for a horror game. The pictures are extremely creepy.
The fact that I was watching Sean play this and wasn't directly playing it, yet it was STILL somehow one of the most frightening games I've ever watched, just goes to show how excellent of a job they did. Insurgency sandstorm has the same thing with its weapons I really like that style
"If I cut one of these will I get electrecuted" Knowing that Jack is smarter than the average person this statement scares me how little people know about something they use everyday that could kill them if mishandled. For those intreseted you could cut the nutral wire (usually blue or black based off you region) without getting electractued and this will cause the power of any place to be shut off, if you cut the live wire you die.

Horror games just become so much scarier to me when they're based on real places
Yep. I just came back from a 2hr wiki-hole. Wow that was sure something.
Oh interesting. Makes sense! 👍
oh, thanks for the info, I never knew that.
This. This was it. I’ve never been this tense over a game or a movie until now because of exactly that.
safe spots usually make a horror game scarier, it tells you that at some point you can die
@@remusk5162 I agree for games with combat but w this one, there wasn't even a break of tension 😂 whole time I was *clenched* lol

I think the fact that little girl ghost play and help us find the coin in her hideout captures that spark quite well❤
Any scary games easily frightens BUT if there's a dog in one of the game and the dog gets killed, all that fear turns into literal anger, I'm not kidding.
