TIP: Turn the LCD Contrast on the original Sigma dp (dp1/dp1s/dp1x and dp2/dp2s/dp2x) cameras all the way down. Then you will see more of the shadow details. Also if you look at the screen at a slight angle from above and not straight on, you will see better the details. Only took me 13 years to realise this 🤔 While the LCD is not great, it is always uplifting to see that the photos are much better than expected when viewing on a computer 😁
The process and the pictures are all that matter in the end. I love your perspective on shooting and you've opened my eyes and helped me stray away from tech spec pixel peeping life and fall back in love with photography.
You're not wrong for using ISO 400 when shooting outside. With this generation of sensors (DP1, DP1s, DP2, DP2s and the SD14), the tonal range shifts with the ISO. The analog converter in the camera does something strange. It compresses highlights similar to how film does. So you get smoother highlight rolloff at the expense of increased noise and color blotchiness in the shadows. In high DR situations, this is perhaps the way to shoot the camera. Low DR situations are best suited for low ISO. I prefer the original DP1 over the DP1s. The change of infrared filter leads to that yellow-green cast you're seeing. The DP1's color is more neutral, at the cost of the battery power management that the DP1s has. Both are great cameras though; the differences are small and not always noticable.
having one sat in front of me and having just shot a day at ISO100 (and religiously, always, sticking to it) i'm stoked to go out and try it at 400. Heck why not! This camera is a PITA and that is just totally fine.
Just discovered the wonderful video. Thank you for that. I also have a DP1. Would never sell it. Even though I hate to deal with all the downsides(ssslllllooooowwww, a display that is not helpful at all and battery life) but the look of the images puts a giant smile on my face. I experienced the same as you. Outdoor in daylight with more static objects to shoot and you‘ll be a happy camper. SPP as converter/developer is just great. Greetings from Nuremberg, Germany.
In my experience, it's the other way around. ISO 400 reduces the tonal range and the dynamic range of the images a lot, which is the oposite of what you want on a high dynamic range scene. This reduced dynamic range is specially critical in this camera, because the transition from shadow to black happens just as quickly as on the highlights. My recommendation is to use ISO 100 when possible, and smooth the highlights roll-off if needed in post by rising the highlights to taste. With ISO 400 the colors on midtones are already very muted and the shadows are an ugly colorful mess.
A short time ago I purchased a DP1s. Frustrating little camera but I saw potential. I then purchased a DP2 Merrill and that camera has me fascinated. Better dynamic range, faster and a near usable rear screen (though I use hot shoe finders in both cameras). The DP2M captures so much detail that it has to be experienced to believe. Down side to both cameras is the slow write time and dismal battery life. Even for short outings I carry a spare battery. To be honest the image quality of the DP2M cancels any negatives. Right now I don’t want to shoot with anything else.
I can completely relate to that sentiment. The Merrill line, and the DP2M in particular, is quite impossible to describe. Just a brilliant camera, though frustrating as well in its own ways. But worth every ounce of patience it requires.
The very organic colors of this series caused me to purchase a DP2s but was VERY disappointed in the lack of sharpness compared to my DP2M. You have me wanting to try this camera now. Hopefully, it is better than the disappointing 2s. The organic colors are amazing and would be a could compliment to my XE1. I also want to try this DP1s for the built in flash. I only shoot RGB now and not Adobe which helps with magenta and green issues. Thanks for your videos. They are very thought provoking and having me revisit some cameras.
I have such a love-hate relationship with the fixed lens foveon cameras. I love the Foveon sensor and the lenses are great but they are some of the most frustrating cameras to work with if you try to approach them like you would almost any other camera. I've had and sold all of the Merrills and whenever I look at the files that came out of those cameras I miss them but I also know I would be just as frustrated if I ever went back. I ended up using them almost like a tiny digital view camera: always on tripod, base iso and all manual. Despite all the annoyances I recommend any photographer to give these cameras a try at least once in their life, the files are truly special.
Great video as always. Just to add a small point regarding the different Foveon generations used by Sigma (let's ignore the Polaroid X530 1 1/8" compact sensor), there were actually 4. Sigma SD9 and SD10 Foveon F7; SD14, SD15 and all the different DP declinations prior to Merrill = Foveon F13; SD1 (Merrill) and the Merrill DPs: Foveon F20 and finally the Quattro family : Foveon F23. Also, although technically all APS-C (except the Quattro H which is APS-H) the F7 and F13 are considerably smaller than the F20 and F23 ;-)
I have no issue auto focusing at 0.3m (a foot). Make sure you don't have limitednfocus mode on (man and mountain symbol). I revisited my dp1x and dp2s cameras after your video. What I noticed I have missed is the organic (film) look and colours it gives while sharp too. I'll be bringing both on vacation to use as main stills cameras.
I have one, and its mixed, but but is probably the last camera I would let go. Shoot in ,raw, and process with Sigma Photo Pro. Probably the only camera were you can see details down to the native resolution, that is pixelwise details
No camera beats the depth of the colors produced with such a kind of sensor. One might not like the overall tone of a photo, or even a color, but the depth is there, and it's unique. If one doubts it, just take pictures side-by-side.
I have two DP Merrills (1 and 3), a DP Quattro (0) and very recently the SD Quattro. I love those cameras and if it is serious digital photography, I only shoot with one of these. (Every day documentation photography I do with an Olympus TG-6 or my smartphone). But I'm not masochistic enough to endure the first versions DP cameras, and I think I will sell the DP1 Merrill and the DP0 Quattro, since to me they seem to be a bit redundant against the SD Quattro.
When you said you were going to do this camera, I got my DP1 out (it was my first Sigma), bought 4 new batteries and shot around with it. As you know I have the DP1 and 2, DP1 and 2 Merrill and the sd Quattro, so I have strong Foveon feelings. The first thing that struck me was how small the OG DP's were. The Merrills feel small compared to my Leica, but the OG DP's are tiny for APS-C. This DP1 was my digital travel camera on a trip to NY a few years ago (I was mainly shooting instant on the SX-70) and I got some great shots (street, travel, fun) but the moment I started shooting it again, I was reminded not of the shots I took that are fabulous, but how frustrating this camera (moreso than the DP2) can be. And I came to the conclusion, I have a little bit of fear that if the DP1 is your first Foveon, it will put off a bunch of people on Sigma Foveon all together as they are the "most unique" of the bunch (and I think most people in this range want a Ricoh GR experience). For the price, it's got the most bang for your buck, but I really think the Merrill is the most balanced of the three series of DP's and worth spending $600 instead of $150. And unless you just HAVE to have 28mm, the DP2 is probably a better intro as the f/2.8 lens reduces the frustration somewhat. When I first started shooting the DP1 again, I was afraid I'd not want to pick up my DP1M, just like when I started shooting the sd Quattro (I wish my Merrill had the software upgrades that the sd's have)...but for me, the perfect balance of "Foven/Size/Quality/Speed" is still the Merrill. But as a Foveon lover (hello, Sigma, let's get Ali and I on the team to help design the new DP, yeah??) I still love all my kids. ;) Oh, and yes the optical VF's are AMAZING...mine for the DP2 cost more than my DP2, but I love it!
I totally see the point and agree, this could be the wrong way to engage with the sigma bodies if it's a first time experience. It's a bit of a conundrum because the financial leap from the original line to the Merrill is significant, but so is the result. And because I like pain, the challenges of the original body don't bother me as much now as they originally did. But I am an odd duck like that.
Fun review as always! Great photos! I don’t have any of these foveon sensor, but definitely tempted! Thank you for your channel and your videos! I always love and enjoy them!
Interesting video! I had two DP1 cameras and both broke! Agree with pretty much everything you said (and have recently made my own video on this subject). I loved my DP1 but moved on to the Merrill series looking for better reliability - what I got was a quite different experience (especially in post processing). I'd have another DP1 tomorrow if I thought it could last the distance.
Same here, I had a first gen DP1 (actually the first that was sold in the UK) and a DP1s and both broke. I´d love to get another one but as you said, only if one could be sure they could last the distance.
Love this channel! Thanks for sharing. I can't explain it, this camera produce some of the best images I've ever seen. Mega pixel don't translate into image quality and this camera is proof of that. If the battery don't die on you, it can create magical images. Super crazy that this camera is really old.
Great review, awesome tips. I have this camera and feel the same. It’s a pain to use but the color straight out of camera is astonishing. Can’t believe you got such good street shots with that shutter lag.
A great insight to the Foveon world as always :) From my experience shooting my SDQ in matrix metering mode and permanently adding 0.7 to 1 made all the difference to color saturation and shadow detail with no blown highlights (raw file). The in camera jpeg image will display slight over exposure warning but the Raw should be fine :) These cameras really benefit from ETTR to get the best dynamic range :)
@@jd5787 I have only tried it on my SDQ, My first Foveon was a DP1Q and found the metering darker than the SDQ. The in camera histogram is based off the jpeg and will be hard over to the right but the raw file will be approx one top before clipping. I'd experiment in variety of conditions as it seems there are metering differences between models.
Interesting! I will try that out. I find this first gen seems to blow highlights incredibly quickly so I tended to favor under exposure but a third or two thirds when needed but will try pushing it a bit more with my Quattros.
The video on the Sigma DP1 with the closeup AML adapter is terrific for a vintage look - see Carl Rytterfalk's RUclips music video of Chinese superstar Wang Fei from about 2011.
As for my very first digital camera, I was very much considering the Sigma SD or DP series cameras since I was coming from shooting exclusively film. Honestly, kind of glad I got the A7 instead - what drew me to that was that I could adapt the Minolta lenses that I already had. After years of shooting, I've still glance over at the DP line of cameras to see what the prices are - but it's just not enough for me to pull the trigger.
Oh man, perfect timing! I’m currently traveling with a DP1 and I couldn’t agree more with these points. It really is a frustrating little camera to use, but those sunrise/sunset direct light moments that it captures like nothing else!!! I just ordered a DP2x that’s waiting for me when I return, so clearly those files are amazing or I’m a masochist. Maybe both. I’ll definitely try that zone focus setting!
Thank you for this review, great tips on battery alternative and the various shooting modes. I still shoot film so lighting limitations is something I live with. Looking forward to getting my own to play with.
None of the DP2 models are a 50mm-equivalent. The original is a 40mm and the Merrill and Quattro are 45mm each. I've read and heard the claim that they're 50mm multiple times, no idea where that came from.
I just got a Sigma DP2s because of this video! I’m excited to shoot with it. Do you generally shoot raw in the standard mode with your DP1s, or one of the other modes (neutral? Vivid?)
I bought your DP2 from you and while I loved much of the output, I personally couldn't deal with the slowness, AF, and how it handled. I wanted to! But I couldn't. That's probably a failing of my own :) That said, your images in this episode were wonderful. The color really stands out as being fantastic and now I'm wishing I didn't sell the DP2. Ahh, life!
Oh wow, so cool to know who got the DP2! I can certainly understand the frustrations and for whatever reason, the limitations after two weeks grew on me and now I actually crave shooting with this camera. Odd indeed.
Ow well, thank you! You did inspire me to get into this slow slow sloooooooow camera with a terrible AF and a shutter reacting on the release as fast as a pig in deep mud. But…..I love this unique little camera! So thank you🤗🤗🤗🤗🙏🏼
just binged a lot of your videos. I myself have been obsessed with early 2k digicams. I've been telling my friends its the new film craze. I just picked up an Olympus Camedia c-5060, fujifilm finepix and a konica minolta all for like $25 each. Been super fun shooting with them and excited to make some content around it. Thanks for the reviews, just subbed :)
I would say the Merrill is a significant step up and a truly brilliant camera (though still slow and frustrating) but I was amazed at how well the original DP did and how much I actually enjoyed it!
I have the DP1x since about 10 years now and my modus operandi is a bit different as I use bracketing to get the highlights and shadows more frequently right. Of course, doing so means to accept the camera is then blocked with writing for maybe 20s.. but i like to have the choice in SPP.. Am really surprised about the ISO 400 you say you use, and also about jpgs which I do not use at all so far (in 10yrs ;) ), but need to try that, tx!
Just bought a sd quattro. Absolutely love the design and build quality. Find my interest in photography dampened a bit other than wildlife so thought this would give me a new perspective
Great review. Never shot the original series. May have to give them a try. Can’t wait to see your take on the Cobalt CCD colors possibilities. They’ve so far kept me from taking the M8/9 plunge. The Fujifilm emulations on the SL are great too. May finally sell the GFX50r due to them.
@@OneMonthTwoCameras Just keep in mind I don't have, nor shot, some of the models being emulated, so can't argue accuracy (all the more reason I'm interested in your take), but the above comment is about pleasing color blooms you don't usually see on modern sensor output and the general age/CCDness (the specific CCD models emulated, of course, are different from each other). The modern Fujfilm emulations seem to do a decent job there too. And because I'm a C1 user (versus Adobe universal packs), I believe in them enough to buy them all again on a second model (SL & SL2). The buying them all once again has cooled my camera lust though. Another potential wallet advantage. 😆
@@OneMonthTwoCameras Yep. Base pack for each, but extended packs (CCD Fever, Fujifilm Digital, etc.) just once on Adobe side, as I understand it. You can see it gets a little expensive to extend for every camera model with Capture One.
@@ricblessing3400 Oh wow I didn’t realize you had to get extension packs for each camera as well on the capture one side. That would definitely add up.
Great video! It is not the worse camera I have used (don't shoot cameras ;-) ) but I replaced it with the dp1x as I was also using the dp2s and dp1s and dp2s had different menus and button functionality which drove me crazy. The dp1x was changed so the differences were not there anymore. If I was only using the dp1s, then it would not have been an issue. The dp1x has histogram when shooting. Would recommend always using ISO 100 unless you do B&W. And ISO 50 is really a treat, but you have to be very careful with highlights. No there was never made a dp3 of the original series, only Merrill and Quattro have dp3 version.
i had this camera back in the days. I still regret selling it for cheaps. After haveing dosens of other cameras with full frame sensors as well. I have to say foveon sensor 4.5mpix aps-c size is gold. Still have sd14 and dp2m.! love these.
Love the build quality and iq sigma delivers. I have a sdQ and a dp2m. While they are frustrating (slow and limited in Iso performance) I am still considering getting a dp1m...
It’s slow - yes. It’s white balance messed up - yes. But this is the beast. This cameras is so unique. No other newer foveon cameras makes such special images sooc. I have best couple for outdoor/indoor shooting Dp1x and Dp2x (for someone who misses bokeh). You need deal with it like you do with your best friends. No 400 ISO ever, always expo correction down by 2-3 stops (all cameras from early series trying to overexpose shots), always on manual/preset wb mode. (For the geeky part: there is some major problems with output in raw for M and Q series. In terms of dynamic range they are maybe better - but colors happen to be “falls out”)
Cobalt does not do "presets" ;) They're making profiles. Actual DCP color profiles. I have not tried the Cobalt DCP profiles, but use DCP profiles for scanning negatives with my dedicated Pacific Image film scanner to match film profiles to the 64 bit raw files I get out of the scanner.
Correct! And also not? I did mention they were profiles when I first discuss Cobalt BUT their film profiles (Kodak specifically) do in fact show up as presets rather than profiles unlike the CCD pack which are located in the profiles section of LR.
@@OneMonthTwoCameras I like it. Little slow viewfinder is good enough. Just looking through my files and no editing. They feel different . hard to explain
The Merrills are a significant step up in performance, but also in price. For those not willing to spend that much, hopefully this can be a bit of a Foveon intro. But I would opt for my Merrill when given the choice, though I do love the smaller body of the original.
@@OneMonthTwoCameras the Merrill’s are pocket medium formats. A lot of eBay and other app alerts. I did see a dp2 Merrill that sold for 240. I th8nj I bought mine for 400 then sold it for 700 and rebought it for 600 ha. We won’t get into the dp3 Merrill price just yet. Have you tried the dp2 s or x?
please tell me what version of sigma photo pro are you using? I noticed the latest versions does not want to work so well with DP2m series (merrill) .. and colors are somehow worse than when I remember using it few years back with older version of sima photo pro. I also have to point that quattro series are not true 3layer sensor the red and blue as I remeber are much less pixels than original foveon X3 series - that's why so many people prefer original Foveon and merrill over the quattro series.
If you like small, interesting cameras, get a hold of an Olympus Pen F. That's next on my list. Also, after watching your video on the Olympus E-1, I got lucky on eBay and bought one for $55 with less than 2000 clicks. Keep up the good work!
Oh my the Pen F digital has long been on my list. Shockingly hard to come by in any value setting but looks very lovely and is high on my list of one day cameras :) And well done on that E1! That's a bargain! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
I had a Pen F and really regret selling it. With a tiny prime lens it was such a lovely, lightweight gem. The FF fan boys will devry the m43 sensor but I loved using it. Great travel camera and much missed. Really held their value too. Olympus made a mistake not releasing an updated Fii
Great review! Unfortunately my DP1 literally just stopped working yesterday.. I knew the retractable lens was a vulnerable bit on these cameras but was hoping it would last a little longer than it did :P the camera sometimes does some weird stuff now the focus seems stuck at 30 centimeters. Apart from that, still an awesome little camera! P.S. if anyone has had similar problems and perhaps a fix, I'm all ears ;)
Your find about the daylight regime is interesting. I have dp2. The only camera where I do not notice artifacts when interpolating an image twice in a good program. Completely different information load per pixel. compared to modern cameras, the same Leica M camera is atavism and imperfection itself, but this is its perfection) I hope I write correctly, my native language is Russian) You are cute as always )
I have owned all the DP, DPM and DPQ series. There really is nothing like them. They are all a pain to use, but they produce images that are unique as you say. Definitely worth the effort and cult following! I also had an SD14 and and SD1 which I didn't like at all and are not as much fun as the smaller bodies.
I realize this is not an old camera but I use an Olympus EPL9 with a lumix 28mm f2.5 as my mock Ricoh GR & Sigma DP. I have a cheap 28mm viewfinder that is not good, but it works. Why doesn't somebody make a reasonably priced & optically OK 28mm finder? Anyway a really nice bring along camera & very capable.
I can't say I've ever understood why external OVFs are so expensive. That sounds like a great set up you have! I have something similar though older with my Lumix GM1 and 14mm 2.5 and 20mm 1.7. I call them my GR and GRX :)
Did you ever try an"equal" Olympus lens? I started with a Panasonic GF2 and Pana lenses , bough a EPL8 as I wanted to use my tablet as a big live view via WiFi. But the EPL8 colors are not to my liking (Pana in the woods is superb). So I got a GF6 which is fine again. Though about selling the EPL8 when I put the 9mm bodycap on it. OMG. Can"t sell it. Seems I have to get more Olympus lenses...
Loving your reviews! I am trying to decide which DP to get 😊.. I miss film cameras and use rangefinders; so i am loving the filmic quality and the slowness of these cameras. Are the Merrill DPs the most filmic? Debating between the DP1 and the DP2..
I’d say it’s quite subjective but I’ve honestly not been unhappy with any of the generations in terms of filmic quality. You can find a couple videos on the Quattro generation on my channel and while I haven’t covered the Merrill (yet), I find it incredibly filmic as well.
@@OneMonthTwoCameras I agree. The Merrill can however be crazy sharp, so that is why one could say the others are bit more filmic. Inspired by your "only keep 2 cameras" video I put my Foveon cameras up against my Lumix s5, and the Merrill dp2 beats it in sharpness and detail. So I consider selling my Lumix s5 as I mainly use Sigma fp/fpL anyways.
Yes, colors are beautiful. There is something about the Foveon sensors. However, this series of Sigma cameras is so painful to use (for me), and, also, the file handling is less than optimal. Sigma's software is a dog and almost unusable, and some of the cameras are not supported in LR. There are some utilities out there to convert from .x3f to .dng, etc. Between the slowness and workflow, I had to bail on them. Kudos to anyone who can handle it!
Hey, i just bought the camera with viewfinder (VF-11) and im having trouble with it beeing and accurate representation of the actual shot im getting, its off by a bit specially on the bottom of the frame, there is a lot of extra area that actually gets captured which doesnt match up with the viewfinders box. Do you have the same problem? since you said that the viewfinder is great and accurate. Thanks
If you want to find out exactly why the Foveon sensor is so outstanding AND so left-field... try reading 'The Silicon Eye' by George Gilder - which charts the process of its development and the title also hints at exactly why such a sensor was imagined in the first place. Trust me... it's a fascinating read and it will also make you appreciate the sensor even more than you obviously already do.
I know you talked about it, but it wasnt clear to me why you would take the DP1s over the Merill on the go, specifically (besides microcontrast) I guess I'm looking for a reason to get one haha :-) (The one I had, died on my before I got a chance to use, lens motor isues)
Price and size. I think if you can afford it, the Merrill is the true champ, but $600 is still expensive. The originals are also a lot smaller feeling in hand.
This is completely off-topic but I just gotta ask, are your necklaces from Dana Rebecca? I have one of those and I just wanted to know if we're twinning. 😂
@@OneMonthTwoCameras Oh, they have lovely pieces! I have the Lauren Joy mini disc necklace. Had it since 2013 and I have worn it to shower and even while sleeping. They have increased their prices since then but the quality is just superb. Anywho, thanks for responding. ☺️
Great video! It makes me think of an older Leica X2 that I use often. I have other ‘better’ cameras but many times I’ll reach for the X2. Terrible low light AF, AF that is only good for stationary objects, pretty much maxes out at iso 3200 (best is at 800 or less), and a pretty low res screen that leaves you guessing at what your pictures might actually look like. Regardless of those and other little niggles, there’s just a certain something that makes it such a joy to shoot with and gives the photos a unique look. I’ll have to check out one of these cameras in your review, thanks again for a great post!
Maxing out at 3200 ISO sounds pretty darn impressive! Most of mine I would not use above ISO 400. That X2 does look like a lovely little camera; I'll have to test it out sometime. Thanks for watching!
Definitely not intended for bokeh. This is most certainly geared more for landscape/travel deep focus sort of photography and for someone like me who generally shoots at a deeper depth of field, it works out great, though it does limit use indoors.
Sounds like you would enjoy a Panasonic GF2 or (bettter) GX1. Paired with a Lumix G X PZ 14-42 and PZ 45-175 - unbelievable. Also unbelievable how Panasonic got their GF line "wronger" with each following generation... No wonder today those GX1 are sold for aficionado prices - there is nothing that comes even close in todays Panasonic lineup. Which says it all about todays camera instdustry. So sad.
Enjoyed the video. The Sigma DP series really does get a lot of flack from the camera community. I've been using my DP1 for vlogging, but I'm in the process of converting it to Full-Spectrum for that Aerochrome emulation and adding an E-mount for manual lenses for more framing options.
I was an avid photographer for decades and was pro for a while. Due to tragic family circumstances I gave it all up in 2015. By coincidence I was rummaging around and found my Sigma Merrills 1,2 &3 a few days ago and was going to get rid of them and then I watched this video, it’s kick started me, I took some photos with the DP3 Merrill (my favourite of the three) today. Now to remember how to do some post.
Imperfections are an elementary ingredient of love... True love. If you have reasons to love someone, you don't love them. When you really love someone, you can only show it by talking about the minimal imperfection of that someone. When you really love someone, you do not love that person DESPITE of the minimal imperfection.... No, you do love that person BECAUSE of the minimal imperfection.... You cannot fully control that someone... And you love that. If we want to have an ideal image/picture, we do not need a camera. AI can make the image for us. Zero creativity. That does not change us. When we have a camera/lens, we cannot fully control, we are changed. We seek for the best composition and such....
@@OneMonthTwoCameras Thank you so much for your response. BTW, I have just recently acquired SIGMA 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM Four Thirds SLR mount. With my Olympus E-500, AF works okay. @@OneMonthTwoCameras My DP2s arrived, I shot a few shots on a fully charged battery until the battery died (less than the equivalent of a roll of 135 film) - so first thing I did is order four additional third party batteries and a USB charger. The battery life is a joke. I shot everything in manual M mode, spot metering at ISO 100. I loaded the RAW images in SPP and I was immediately BLOWN AWAY. I know it's only 5MP resolution, but I will never look at Bayer images the same way. The colors are amazing without any amount of tweaking and the CLARITY of details and micro contrast is RIDICULOUSLY amazing. I went on Ebay immediately and bought a DP2 Merrill. I feel like I just bought a lifetime supply of slide film for peanuts.
@@weisserth that is amazing! And just wait until you see what the Merrill can do. It's incredible. I have to think battery life on the DP2s will be very different with the new batteries as well. It sounds like the battery it came with just wasn't capable of holding a charge any longer. Welcome to the Foveon club!

Love listening to people trying to describe the joy of Foveon files
A fools errand 😂💕
@@OneMonthTwoCameras and I must say I like your photography, nice photos not forced or over processed, very natural.
@@micgent thank you!
Just sold all my digital, and gone full on film, Minolta a9, Rollei 35te and Pentax 645n. May get a DP2 Merrill
That’s awesome David! The price of film stings these days but a sigma could definitely help offset those celluloid dollars.
You must be rich
@@unbroken1010 not really, I just enjoy shooting film, all be it in moderation
Foveon forever! I use dp3m 8 years! It’s fantastic tools! Thanks!
Also, although technically all APS-C (except the Quattro H which is APS-H) the F7 and F13 are considerably smaller than the F20 and F23
;-)
Very good and detailed color to add!!
But as a Foveon lover (hello, Sigma, let's get Ali and I on the team to help design the new DP, yeah??) I still love all my kids. ;)
Oh, and yes the optical VF's are AMAZING...mine for the DP2 cost more than my DP2, but I love it!
Thank you so much Kary. Always appreciate your thoughts and comments
you have become my favorite camera youtuber
Wow thank you so much ❤️
Thanks for the Sigma showcase. Can’t wait until the next video!
Thanks Karen!
Another nice review. You were in the Netherlands, great!
your photos from Prague are wonderful and have a great feel to them, hard to guess when they were taken. also, I love the colors.
Thanks Mon!
Try the street set up I mentioned and you may be surprised at how it speeds up shooting, even if it’s not instantaneous :)
I will try that. Works across all sigma sensors?
@@jd5787 I have only tried it on my SDQ, My first Foveon was a DP1Q and found the metering darker than the SDQ. The in camera histogram is based off the jpeg and will be hard over to the right but the raw file will be approx one top before clipping. I'd experiment in variety of conditions as it seems there are metering differences between models.
Interesting! I will try that out. I find this first gen seems to blow highlights incredibly quickly so I tended to favor under exposure but a third or two thirds when needed but will try pushing it a bit more with my Quattros.
@@OneMonthTwoCameras I have heard the non Q models can blow out faster especially in the red/yellows. Experiment and see how you go :)
Hi, just added you setting recommendations to the sigma DP1S, instantly love this camera many thanks.
Aww that is amazing! SO glad you're enjoying.
After years of shooting, I've still glance over at the DP line of cameras to see what the prices are - but it's just not enough for me to pull the trigger.
superb presentations !
Oh wow that’s awesome timing indeed! Curious about the X iterations; apparently updated menus. Cant wait to hear what you think of it.
Thank you for this review, great tips on battery alternative and the various shooting modes. I still shoot film so lighting limitations is something I live with. Looking forward to getting my own to play with.
Would love to know what you think of it! Incredibly similar experience to film for me.
None of the DP2 models are a 50mm-equivalent. The original is a 40mm and the Merrill and Quattro are 45mm each. I've read and heard the claim that they're 50mm multiple times, no idea where that came from.
It's again a very good and honest review! 👌🏼
Thanks again!
Love the rendering of my recently acquired DP2 over my DPM, some shots look pleasing whereas the other one rends to get clinical.
I just got a Sigma DP2s because of this video! I’m excited to shoot with it. Do you generally shoot raw in the standard mode with your DP1s, or one of the other modes (neutral? Vivid?)
7:07 Love the colors in this shot.
All the Sigma but thank you 😊
I bought your DP2 from you and while I loved much of the output, I personally couldn't deal with the slowness, AF, and how it handled. I wanted to! But I couldn't. That's probably a failing of my own :)
That said, your images in this episode were wonderful.
So thank you🤗🤗🤗🤗🙏🏼
Haha! Isn’t it a masochistic relationship? But such a joy of a little pocket cam. Glad you’re liking it!!
@@OneMonthTwoCameras Hahahaha a little masochistic you must be to enjoy this gem! Shooting my 1932 Leica Standard is more easy😂 Have a nice weekend!!!
just binged a lot of your videos.
That is awesome! This little cameras are so fun and addictive. Thanks for the sub and welcome to the channel!
I still have the DP2S. You are not alone.
That’s awesome! Such a keeper.
Those colors are crazy. I very nearly bought one when they came out with the first Foveon sensors, but I kept waiting for the next version. :-)
I would say the Merrill is a significant step up and a truly brilliant camera (though still slow and frustrating) but I was amazed at how well the original DP did and how much I actually enjoyed it!
Love your contents! What camera did you use for this video? It looks like kind of vintage and I really like it.
Thank you so much! I shot this with an Olympus EM5iii. A great little camera.
I got a DP2x a few months ago, its a charming camera with quite an annoying workflow. Colors can be very nice but you have to work for it.
Yes definitely more work but for me, more reward as well :)
DP1x was my first Foveon Sensor camera. Despite the limitations, it’s still a great camera.

Wow that’s a statement! Definitely excited to give these profiles a try.
@@ricblessing3400 I believe we have to buy the camera packs for Lightroom as well?
Interesting I almost ordered the x iteration. Good callout on the dp3 only coming out in the Merrill and Quattro flavors.
i had this camera back in the days.
I am a total convert to these sigmas. I feel like the frustrations are well worth it in the end :)

I am eager to try one of those bad boys out someday. Heard great things.
Awesome review and photo examples
Thank you as always!!
In terms of dynamic range they are maybe better - but colors happen to be “falls out”)
Amen.
I agree. I had one . but did not have the patience for it. Moved on the SD and SD Quattro. Way happier. Jpgs under rated.
Yeah the quattro is a completely different animal.
@@OneMonthTwoCameras I like it. Little slow viewfinder is good enough. Just looking through my files and no editing. They feel different . hard to explain

Love/hate this camera. Had one for a while before I went to the DP2 Merrill and DP3 Merrill.
Just picked up another dp1. Where did you get your view finder?
@@RCBladeKing Oh so fun! I grabbed my OVF from KEH.com
please tell me what version of sigma photo pro are you using? I noticed the latest versions does not want to work so well with DP2m series (merrill) .. and colors are somehow worse than when I remember using it few years back with older version of sima photo pro. I also have to point that quattro series are not true 3layer sensor the red and blue as I remeber are much less pixels than original foveon X3 series - that's why so many people prefer original Foveon and merrill over the quattro series.
Interesting. I am using SPP6

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear!
in China they have a fix where the lens stays out so that it won't break again but you would have to send it over there for repair
Your find about the daylight regime is interesting. I have dp2. The only camera where I do not notice artifacts when interpolating an image twice in a good program. Completely different information load per pixel.

That's an interesting observation!
Couldn't agree with you more :)
Would you recommend the dp1 over the dp2?
You should do a direct comparison to the actual CCD equipped cameras when you test the profiles! Unless you sold most of them…
I thankfully have almost all the comparative cameras and certainly plan to! Thanks for the suggestion.
Fascinating.why are so many things lovely in one way and awful in others?!
Loving the extra from Breaking Bad outfit 😝😘❤️
Haha! Thank you.
Loving your reviews! I am trying to decide which DP to get 😊.. I miss film cameras and use rangefinders; so i am loving the filmic quality and the slowness of these cameras. Are the Merrill DPs the most filmic? Debating between the DP1 and the DP2..
The dp2s or dp1s/dp1x are more filmic than the Merrill series.

😮 impressive!!!
Can you give some recommendations on prime lens compact cameras (outside of the Ricohs)?
Yes, colors are beautiful. There is something about the Foveon sensors. However, this series of Sigma cameras is so painful to use (for me), and, also, the file handling is less than optimal. Sigma's software is a dog and almost unusable, and some of the cameras are not supported in LR. There are some utilities out there to convert from .x3f to .dng, etc. Between the slowness and workflow, I had to bail on them. Kudos to anyone who can handle it!
I just got this. I blame you! Lol I love it!
:P!
btw. Sigmas colors and sharpnes.. microcontrast. So analog look with so much of tiny extreme details!. - this is foveon x3. great shots!
Thank you very much!
If you have enough light to keep the ISO low, the DP1S and DP2M take great photos.
For guy who predominantly uses m8 and m9 is this camera still slower.. am I more adaptable
Wondergul video!!
Thank you Kim!
Patrick nailed it!

Good eye!! Yes I had a wonderful stopover to visit with another digicam photographer and am looking forward to sharing the video about it!
I had one and it had to go. Too much got in the way of just shooting
I can totally understand that. I would opt for my Merrill or Quattro when given the option.
F4😢 kinda limiting for the bokeh obsessed. But the photos have a great look.
I’m sorry to hear of the photographic stall but am glad you dug up your sigmas. The DP2 Merrill is my next review!
One of the best camera I've ever had !

A beautiful and relatable point of view. Thanks for sharing.
@@OneMonthTwoCameras Thank you so much for your response. BTW, I have just recently acquired SIGMA 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM Four Thirds SLR mount. With my Olympus E-500, AF works okay. May be not perfect, but it works. The optics is not the best in the world, but it is nice to have one fast prime lens..., ah, since I have LEICA D VARIO-ELMARIT 14-50mm F2.8-3.5 ASPH.
@@dokugohikken8769 Nice!!!
@@OneMonthTwoCameras Thank you so much for your response!
By the way you talk about this camera, I can tell you must be an stellar wife.
Your videos are very bad for my GAS.
I just had to get myself the DP2S now (prefer the longer focal length).
Haha. Enjoy!!
Have you ever thought about becoming a sale's woman...;)>
Ha! Not sure saying something is the worst camera ever is a great sales tactic?? :P
@@OneMonthTwoCameras lol, just saying to a camera company you would be an asset…;)
@@kibbsnowden6893 I’ll take it! :P
Let it be known that Sigma makes shitty products all across the board, regardless of what it is. Don't dare risking your hard earned cash on Sigma shit. You've been warned -
