I actually know of a very strange but quite useful (to me at least) use for a ballpein hammer. Basically, when you cut copper pipe with pipe cutters, it crimps the end a little. I know some people uncrimp it with pliers, and there's probably special tools for it, but the way I do it is I lock the pipe in a vice, crimped end up, place the pein side in the end of the pipe, with the face pointing up. Then you take a regular hammer, and gently tap the face of that hammer against the face of the ballpein hammer a few times, and boom. You've uncrimped the pipe.
If I can just lightly suggest not striking hammer heads against each other? If you're going to do that, use a rubber mallet, you're less likely to come to grief doing it that way. It's all fun and games until it goes wrong, and then it could be a trip to the emergency room.

On full size locomotives with 4 wheel lead/trailing trucks, where is the pivot point for the truck? Is it aft of the center of the truck in order to keep thing better in line in the track, or are real world curves enough wider that they don't throw the geometry off with a center pivot on a four wheel truck? I know most of the models I've handled either have some side to side slop in the truck, or an off center pivot to account for the tighter turns, but no idea how the real ones are constructed.
Depends; lead trucks seem to pivot about the center in my experience, and trailing trucks pivot from way ahead of the truck. I've only got so much experience with 4 axle trucks though.
