As a young man it was hard to understand the rise of fascism. Well now all we have to do is look around us to see how it has taken root and growing and why political parties are too timid to halt its progress.
He is just using it as a frightening label. There is no, to believe the media, any slightly right- it is all far right. Despite many interviews that show this not to be the case for the vast majority.
Hi, Stem ye Trucker, good question, I decided that I was not sure what the word means so I looked it up in a dictionary, it started as the adjective used toi describe the anti-communist movement in Italy during the early twentieth century!, since real communists were never a real threat to anybody the word soon got used as label for all sorts of other types of attitude and behaviour, always as a pejorative, not ever a thing that any one has laid claim to with pride. There are some aspects of language development that cannot really be defined, so many words that relate to ideas or concepts without real form or character, tags for the way some people feel but not any breason. Cheers, Richard.
Fascism is "palingenetic ultranationalism". Extreme right-wing ideology with a strong emphasis on rebirth of the nation. Trump technically doesn't really meet that definition because he is very much part of the capitalist establishment and isn't in any sense dynamic the way actual fascist leaders were. Despite all the "Make America great again" stuff he just lacks the energy and conviction. Note that this doesn't mean he is any "better" or worse than actual fascists I just don't think that term applies to him.
The defining characteristic of fascism is total suppression of all political opposition. There are a few examples currently around that meet the spec’ - Trump isn’t one of them.

This would leave the author of the Foreword of the "Unofficial Project 2025 Manual" in place with those who penned that same document "Pulling his strings" while they continue their intended reform of voting policy (AKA "deletion" of votes) Expect an "Extended term" with the incumbent still in his early 40's... In place unless or until he ails to measure up to their expectations. I wonder who the new VP would be?

I hate this talk that dismisses voters’ decisions, essentially saying they’re stupid because they voted for someone “we”don’t approve of. Why is Trump a 'fascist'? According to Mussolini, who invented the word, fascism is rule by a close association between corporations and the state. This neatly defines so-called 'Western democracy'. So why single out Trump for this accolade?

I'm scared that a man with dementia had control of a nuclear arsenal, I'm scared very bad actors have taken over US politics and have lead us down a dark and potentially catastrophic path, I'm scared the unelected alternative to Trump was served up without the opportunity to assess brain function, policy, 'presidential' aura and who funds her. I'm scared despite the overwhelming opinion of the US tax payer, electorate, the road to WW3 has been set and keyed in. I'm scared who actually runs America. Will Trump change this? Who knows. But the Staus Quo is very very dangerous!
@@Redf322 Trump is dangerous because if he starts a trade war with the rest of the world there is a real danger to the world economy, I am surprised Richard did not mention this.
I am much more confident that Labour WOULD do things to counter rising fascism. The UK is in a much better place than America, we have a strong centre ground of politics. Far right parties like Reform Ltd cannot achieve power in the UK (thanks to our first past the post system), and the Conservatives will in my view eventually revert back to the middle.
I only hope that Labour will even recognise the rise of fascism, then they can counter it. The first past the post system did not stop Reform UK gaining 5 seats in this parliament. Do you know of Nigel Farage's past ? As for the Conservatives, both candidates in their leadership election are from the far right of politics.
Very sombre stuff indeed. In 1933, the Austrian painter also signed the "Law for the Prevention of Hereditarily Diseased Offspring", culminating within a few years in the murder of hundreds of thousands of people with long term illnesses. The idea of people believing that society must rid itself of "useless eaters" to prosper is once again an imaginable scenario. Without wishing to scaremonger, I can understand the fear induced by this new "Labour" government's stance on cutting illness benefits, alongside Starmer's highlighting his intentions to further the debate on "assisted dying"
Just like the MAID scheme in Canada introduced by that renowned humanitarian Justin Castro. A scheme with a very wide net for all the 'useless eaters' At some point fascism and socialism have become a bit confused.

I'm not really sure why people think Trump is significantly worse than Harris/Biden. Both are very bad. Trump is more right-wing on id politics but had a less aggressive foreign policy. After what happened in Gaza in the last year I care very little which US candidate is elected.
This is my thoughts too. Trump is unhinged but to call him fascist? Seems like throwing buzz words around. Where was the oppression and the end of democracy when he was in for a whole term last time? If someone can't tell me exactly why he is a fascist, I can't take them seriously tbh.
On balance of the two main candidates I *think* Harris is preferable of the two. But I'm not as sure about that as I would like. However, I think if I was there I'd go 3rd party. Perpetual lesser of two evils has just caused the whole political world in the US to move closer and closer to hell, to the point where protecting women's rights in one country is being leveraged over the human rights of those in another. It's madness.
I guess if you kiss up to rissia, that would be less aggressive. The fool was talked out of going to war with Mexico. He was a dangerous clown. @@wayneford2481 Is he more “unstable” now than he was when he had his finger on the nuclear button during his presidency from 2016-2020? What are you basing your concern that he’s not to be trusted with the nuclear codes now on? Also, don’t forget that the Biden/Harris administration has been funding military escalation in the Middle East, expanding it into a regional conflict, with at least two nuclear participants directly involved (four, if you count the US and UK, who have their hands bloodied too). So, I wouldn’t automatically assume that Harris is a safe pair of hands where that’s concerned. And let’s not forget her hawkish statements about making the US military “the strongest, most lethal fighting force in the world”. She’ll definitely be working in the service of the military-industrial complex and the warmongers.
You had me until you decided to predict the political response of the UK government under Labour to a Trump victory. After that, you're just another talking head.
You are all over the place in your understanding of mid-20th century totalitarian ideologies. Freely throwing about and conflating the terms without any real understanding of what they mean. Perhaps your worst transgression is your attempt to bring these terms into the 21st century and apply them to a figure who, only 20 or 30 years ago, would have been considered mainstream in his thinking (despite his transgressive personality). What's laughable is your thinking that fascism is something that can be removed from pre-WW2 Italy and be transplanted everywhere else today, including into the US. If you knew anything about it you would know that Mussolini arose out out the Italian trade union movement and that the very word "fascism" comes from the Italian for trade union. So rather than fascism being something that you can clearly juxtapose against trade unionism (as you do) you need get an understanding of the corporatism that fascism stood (not "stands") for. You'll ignore this because as far as you are concerned "fascist" simply means "someone I don't like"
Fascism doesn't come from that at all, it comes from a bundle of sticks, one stick can easily broken but tied together they are much stronger - Stronger Together adopted by Labour after the Manchester bombing is the international slogan of Fascism. The latin name for the bundle of sticks is a Fasci hence Fascism.

Without going into a trail of events, what resulted were cataclysmic events that cost countless lives. To be flippant with the use of some of the terms used to name some of these ideologies is crude and base. Something you might think a university professor might be keen to avoid

Glass houses and bricks spring to mind. The 1/4 witted electorate of the UK, consistently elect tories by a 2:1 preference over Labour[1] all though the line between them is ever closer. They voted for Brexit, Bozo Johnson... Let's be honest today's Labour under Kid Starver would fit right in with Ted Heath and possibly John Major.
Liberty have today been given a court date to argue against Labours appeal against the win Liberty had earlier this year in court challenging Bravermans redefining of "serious" in protest law. Labour had the opportunity to not appeal, to adhere to the courts findings that the new definition was unlawful, to scrap the change. They've not done so. Instead insisting on taking the appeal forward. This is exactly the fascist style laws that are the thin end of the proverbial wedge. We have a borderline fascist government already. Trump taking over in the US will only encourage the development of that attitude. Socialism is now seen as a dirty word. A dirty movement. A threat to democracy. It's nothing of the sort. Democracy in ancient Athens was all about socialism, about the people doing their best for society. Unfortunately not only is the world screwed up environmentally but also politically.

Are you joking? If he knew this he would not describe Trump as a fascist
