Rod type for me would totally depend on the season im fishing. When spring salmon are running im usually fishing the river for summer steelhead and the river i fish is medium width with lots of space and long runs and a steelhead rod (8-12lb-ish) works perfectly fine and I've never had an issue...however when im targeting fall salmon on the coast I wouldn't even think of taking a 8-12lb rod. Coastal river, narrow in spots, super rocky/snaggy, short runs, lots of debris fish will run for to hide when hooked...the salmon I've caught gave me fits with a 10-20 rod and you would be best outfitted with a rod you can put the brakes on a 20-30lb or bigger fish. 12-25lb rod is what i use...80lb braid main line and 40lb mono leader. 50-65lb braid works ok but the sharp coastal river rock ledges cut braid so fast!

Awesome videos and you are obviously living the dream. I would like advice. Trying to get into Salmon fishing. I met a fellow fisherman willing to help teach me, but as far as the equipment they can only say they have a 9'+ Heavy / Fast Action Pole. I think I found what I want to use and I am trying to marry it up with a reel. This is what I am looking at and could use some sage advice. To me they seem to have similar features. - Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier 2 Spinning Reel - PQF4000 on sale now $48.99 - Pflueger President Spinning Fishing Reel - PRESSP40X - AMZN $69.99 I'm still flipping back and forth between a Okuma SST 9'9" Heavy / Fast Action Cabelas $99 or Okuma Guide Select Pro 9'9" Medium / ??? Action On Sale $109
That Pflueger PressP40X is well worth the money. I still have a couple of them. They were my go-to reels for quite some time. As for rods, I don’t think a heavy rod is the way to go. A medium is much better. It will work better for different setups. Though it’s a bit more, the guide select pro would be a better investment in my opinion.
@@AnglingAddictsPNW Thank you. I will go with the Pflueger and the GSP Med/Med. I hope to have some success with Salmon. Sad that I have lived 6 Miles from this river and never fished it. Mostly because during the season I see shoulder to shoulder Anglers (Flossing). FYI I do some Surf Fishing (Copalis Beach, WA) and your videos are helping me refine my rigs.
I recently got a 9ft 6-12 1/4-5/8 spinning rod, for chum and chinook salmon. how much max drag on a reel would you recommend? I was thinking 12 or 15 but I am not sure.
Nick, at Barview a few days ago a guy just down from me landed a magnificent 30" wild coho on a blue spinner. It was both sad and hilarious; no one around could decide whether it was legal or not, only because ODFW's website is so absurdly useless. And I have two advanced degrees! I assume inside of the tips of the jetties is not ocean, but river. And we all were of the belief that wild ocean coho was closed. But beyond that ... ???? Do you have any idea what the current regulations are for both coho and chinook landed in the channel? And perhaps more important, where do YOU get your current salmon regulations?
Hey, I feel you about the regulations not been clear. I tried to pull then up myself yesterday after catching and releasing two wild cohos. The third one finally was a hatchery and I kept it. There is literally 0 guidance about coho in rivers or at least the Sandy.
@@NK-np1he, ODFW's website is abusive. It is so insane that activities that can carry massive fines if you make one tiny mistake are provided with such pathetic guidance. It's as if they _want_ us to be criminals. It truly makes my blood boil. Oh, and one more point, how do you like the 7 pixel photos used to ID fish? Google any fish and there are trillions of stunning, crystal clear photos. But ODFW's photos -- like those for identifying salmon -- are as bizarre as they are absurd.
@@xyzct when I caught my first coho I was confused from the excitement. But it's not that hard to remember white mouth and black. I think the pictures are just fine. Sounds like you need to catch some fish. Good luck
@@NK-np1he, no, I know my fish. I've been a salmon fisherman for 40 years. My point was simply that ODFW has totally crappy photos that are almost useless to someone who is not clear. Why? What's the point? Why not have high quality photos? Pixels are free.
If a certain spinner or color doesn’t work, after you basically covered all the water with that spinner when do you change that out for a different size or color?
sergeybeast - there are plenty of times where I only make a few casts and swap out spinners.. but for the most part once I’ve covered what I can I change to a different color.
Flouro is pretty expensive, plus you save a lot of line by having a 20 ft flouro section. Every couple of trips you just replace the flouro and the braid stays pristine, lasting you a couple years.
Chao Wu - I haven’t had a chance to go after striped bass yet but I caught a lot of black bass with the bullet squid spinners. I haven’t tried the heavier spinners yet since I just started adding them but considering I was catching fish off the jetty with the 3/8oz spinners, the heavier sized ones may be better
@@1jeliaz - all the setups are good for river fishing but the best setup is dictated by the type of water, as well as water and weather conditions. Throwing spinners is easy but it’s not the best technique anywhere and all the time.. learning as many techniques as possible and knowing when to use them will get you more fish, that’s all I could say
Really depends on what kind of line you are running and what lb test.. i'm usually fishing 30lb braid with 15-20lb fluorocarbon, and i know that will hold up with my drag set tight enough that i can just barely pull line from the reel by hand. Coho are super active when you hook them and it's better to be too loose than too tight, since you are more likely to brake off with a really tight drag.... you will know after you hook into one whether you are too loose or too tight...... then you can dial your reel in :) Good luck out there
@@AnglingAddictsPNWI use 35lbs braid. And usually 12, or 15lbs floro leader. What would the ideal drag be? I was thinking 12 or 15lbs drag, but I'm not sure.
I have a Trophy koho 9ft spinning rod...rated 8 to 15 lbs as i get springs too.,its probably medium action and almost the whole rod bends which i like, saves the shoulde.....oh in my experience a good braid ratio is 8lb mono is the same as 30 lb braid and 12 lb braid will be 50 lb braid

nice video! how much the dragging power I need for the reel? 7kg is enough? thanks!
10lb, otherwise prepare more braided line
Do you have a cheap setup that you can use float fishing as well?
Hey will the squid and flying c spinners work far away from the bay/ocean. Like in Redding ca on the Sacramento River??
whats a good spinner to start with at the clackamas?
Great Info Nick! this video i am sure this info will help ALOT of new people to salmon and steelhead fishing. (BTW how do i get you my info for fishing on the sandy?)
Darrin - thanks darrin, every little bit of info helps and I know there are quite a few new subscribers that are just getting into salmon fishing. You can email me at anglingaddictspw@gmail.com
I guess that email don’t work

Awesome videos and you are obviously living the dream. I would like advice. Trying to get into Salmon fishing. I met a fellow fisherman willing to help teach me, but as far as the equipment they can only say they have a 9'+ Heavy / Fast Action Pole. I think I found what I want to use and I am trying to marry it up with a reel. This is what I am looking at and could use some sage advice. To me they seem to have similar features.
- Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier 2 Spinning Reel - PQF4000 on sale now $48.99
- Pflueger President Spinning Fishing Reel - PRESSP40X - AMZN $69.99
I'm still flipping back and forth between a
Okuma SST 9'9" Heavy / Fast Action Cabelas $99 or
Okuma Guide Select Pro 9'9" Medium / ???
Hey now don’t forget about those 1oz Mepps Syclops Spoons 😁
Can I use other braid brands
What is a good setup for a river?
Saludos amigo
If a certain spinner or color doesn’t work, after you basically covered all the water with that spinner when do you change that out for a different size or color?
sergeybeast - there are plenty of times where I only make a few casts and swap out spinners.. but for the most part once I’ve covered what I can I change to a different color.
Any reason not to run 100% flouro on the reel and down to the spinner? Does having a leader change much?
Flouro is pretty expensive, plus you save a lot of line by having a 20 ft flouro section. Every couple of trips you just replace the flouro and the braid stays pristine, lasting you a couple years.
Just out of curiosity have you caught any rockfish or stripped bass with inline spinners?
Chao Wu - I haven’t had a chance to go after striped bass yet but I caught a lot of black bass with the bullet squid spinners. I haven’t tried the heavier spinners yet since I just started adding them but considering I was catching fish off the jetty with the 3/8oz spinners, the heavier sized ones may be better
what size are the hooks with the squids you sell on your website please let me know. thanks im a new subscriber by the way.
TheCapitan - I use 1/0 Siwash for the 3/8oz & 1/2oz spinners and a 2/0 for the 3/4-1oz. Thanks for subscribing and welcome to the channel!!
Angling Addicts PNW what is a good setup for river salmon fishing?
@@1jeliaz - all the setups are good for river fishing but the best setup is dictated by the type of water, as well as water and weather conditions. Throwing spinners is easy but it’s not the best technique anywhere and all the time.. learning as many techniques as possible and knowing when to use them will get you more fish, that’s all I could say
Just learned the mono 6 lb is the same diameter as the 20 lb braided.
10'6" gives you better mending ability, especially when wading.
I just came to stare at that wall behind you ;)
How much drag do I need for coho?
@@averagesalmonfishermanbc88074lbs of pulling strength with 12lb is perfect
I’m guessing it’s Eddie that uses the straight braid no leader😂
Austin Perry - LMFAO indeed it is 😂🤣
Braid with a swivel! 😂😂😂
@@eddieestoy7709 lol I remembered that part AFTER I posted this.
poorly edited
I have a Trophy koho 9ft spinning rod...rated 8 to 15 lbs as i get springs too.,its probably medium action and almost the whole rod bends which i like, saves the shoulde.....oh in my experience a good braid ratio is 8lb mono is the same as 30 lb braid and 12 lb braid will be 50 lb braid
