The difference as I see it between the 2 models is that there are lots of little changes from the original design to the modern one which when taken individually makes a small difference with the most stand out difference being the active pre-amp. The thing is that when you take all those changes and put them onto one bass you can see a clear case of evolution as has happened down the years with the Jazz bass design. By the way, if anyone finds that they are missing some amount of punch in their bass sound, try changing your pickup selector to a switch rather than a blend. I have found that there is a certain amount of interference that the pickups have on each other which has the effect of smoothing out the sound and makes the whole thing seem tamer. For me, as I mainly play rock music, a switch makes all the difference as the music I play needs all the punch I can get.
I owned a Fender Elite Jazz a few years back. It was a toneless wonder. I sold it for a huge loss 3 months later, but never looked back. The Elite in this video has the same vanilla tone. I blame the graphite reinforcement rods and the high mass bridge for this, but just my theory. I ended up with a vintage reissue and am happy. I also like my MIM basses a lot better than the MIA's with graphite and high mass bridges.
I think you may blame the noiseless pickups for that lack of tone. That AVRI sounds like it can eat the deluxe even when being asleep. Jokes aside, i tried many deluxe 4 and 5 versions and they were all very resonant and nice sounding unplugged.
I own the American Elite jazz bass I absolutely love it too pieces best bass ive ever owned and one id the best ive ever played only played a couple that felt better playability wise but the tone is 100% unmatched id your considering a American fender just pull the trigger you wont regret it
Your videos are so totally helpful!!! The way you guys play and the other twiddles the 'knobbies' is genius. And you play for extended amounts of time, too. I think you guys stumbled upon the best review process known to man.
Love the jams at the beginning of each and every bass episode! This one reminds me of Snoopy and Woodstock for some reason from the Peanuts comics. The give and take between you guys when playing is awesome!
If you are a guitar player like me and only need to have one bass...It has to be the Fender Jazz AVRI64 (which i own) THE definitive bass (even more so that a Precision...but i'm biased)...
I regret to say that, to my hears, the AVRI 64 of the Chicken intro, sounded much louder and defined than the Elite ... I wanted to buy an Elite but now I'm hesitating ... is it due to the different skills and/or tastes of the two players? Did you hear the same difference?
Bah.. I bought the American Original 60s... I'll let you know my impressions once I buy the Am. Elite which I'm waiting for a right-priced second hand option for ...
Wish you guys hadn't used the maple elite jazz for the demo, the other option is the ebony jazz elite fretboards, which sound soooo much better. And nothing they've made since even compares In my opinion, ppl are still talking about em on RUclips n redit. Hard to get ebony now I guess. Or just too expensive after covid 😅
I'm with Nathan, I am not feeling those block inlays and the neck binding. I know it's just a looks thing but it is not what I want to see on my bass. Wait....where's Hank Hill?
Electric Indians Official If you can afford it, the one that Dweezil Zappa has today. ;-). Just kidding. Fenders always seem to each have their own personalities. Even amongst two of the same model. See if you can find one to play in person before spending your money. If you cannot locate one locally, make certain that the dealer has a good return and exchanges policy.
Playing was fair enough. Tones in that opening jam are dire though ... Plus, that Vintage needs a setup, rattly. Maybe Lee is pulling harder than Nathan ... seems like, later. I like active basses, my Main is a Q5, but on classic Fenders I'd go passive. That said, my Jazz is a Sire ;^) Had to have one. Love it.
I think it's the bearded guys more feminine hands. as a so called nerd guy (as we call them here) he's got thinner fingers and hands, making it harder for him to fret properly.
Prefer the sound of the Vintage 64, but I'm not a fan of the bells over the bridge and especially the pups. They look cool, but kind of get in the way.
That’s Mark Kings brother.... Mark reckons he’s a better bass player than he is.... hahaha....I think Nathan and Lee are super lads.... great rundown on gear.
I searched for months to purchase a black on black Elite Jazz bass. I finally found one in mint condition and paid more for it than a new Ultra which is an Elite with fewer features for more money. But I had saved up and held out and now hold it in my hands. I got my dream bass and just looked at it for a while. Later, I stopped into a Sam Ash music store to pick up pedal and saw one that looked exactly like mine on the wall, so I went over to check it out to see what it was selling for. $400 brand new? “WHAT?” Then I noticed is was a Squier which was only apparent within 3 ft. I can’t get the image out of me head and will never see mine quite the same. Might even sell it. You idiots at Fender are DISGUSTING. You counterfeit your own top of the top bases with a cheap Squier? What is f@%kin’ wrong with you? Okay, you have no respect for your brand, but how about your pro customers? You just had to rip off your own $2100 Jazz complete with the same colours, black binding on the neck and little painted on black rectangle markers on the fret board? Marketing guys who probably never touched a guitar just couldn’t help themselves, was that it? You couldn’t have painted the cheap Indonesian knockoff dark blue or purple or something? Kids just starting out in their basement that buy $400 guitars made in Indonesia like purple, don’t they. Who makes these decisions? Whoever signed off on this is a total jackass! Last Fender I buy.
Love the "old" one, and Lee plays it very well. Neither Nathan nor the "new" bass are my cup of tea. Also Nathan TWICE did a Trump-type ignoring of the handshake/bumping/whatever. He sounds like a lout, acts like a lout and plays solos like a guitarist. Hire the new guy! Send Nathan back to the pub.
Ndlanding Nathan is a bass player foremost but does play guitar in Level 42, as his brother Mark is obviously the focal point in that band on bass! Sometimes he has to interrupt Lee to get things back on track as Lee does tend to try to talk too much about certain points. Love both these guys, though, and they both play really well IMO.
@@peterthomas1187 Ehh...Nathan's playing is inauthentic and sounds translated from guitar. However, spectacular playing is not required or even expected in a demo like this. It's the aptly characterized loutishness that makes these videos hard to get too excited about. He comes across as rude and boorish in a careless sort of way.
10:22 Fender American Vintage 64 played individually
18:06 Fender American Elite played individually
not even a bass player, but love hearing two talented bassists jam out.
These Jams are getting to Guitar Paradiso level amazing!
I love Nathan's appreciation of Tonewoods and Finish differences in tone.
Damn that opening jam was awesome
The fellowship (with Guthrie Govan) have a nice cover of it too.
What’s so amazing about Jaco is how he did what it took both of these guys who are no slouches themselves to play. And Jaco was so freakin soulful.
You guys should make a video about valve amplifiers for bass, which are not that common nowadays.

The Chicken on two basses? Brilliant! Made my day
I owned a Fender Elite Jazz a few years back. It was a toneless wonder. I sold it for a huge loss 3 months later, but never looked back. The Elite in this video has the same vanilla tone. Jazz bass heaven! Go on Lee, give us a video of you playing A Portrait Of Tracy.
7:40 The American Elite neck's compound fingerboard radius (9½″-14″) should not be confused with its compound “Modern ‘C’ to ‘D’” back shape.
Yep it's my favourite feature on my American Elite jazz bass absolutely live it
I have the Elite and love it.
dang are you sure about that? I have the P and I've never noticed that. I'll check mine, but that sounds like some kind of an issue!
bad thumbs but isn’t it the purpose of a tone knob to affect the sound?
Jeez you guys simply make those basses sing like Angels...max respect and admiration
Holy shit, that vintage 64 low end is nuts
I own the American Elite jazz bass I absolutely love it too pieces best bass ive ever owned and one id the best ive ever played only played a couple that felt better playability wise but the tone is 100% unmatched id your considering a American fender just pull the trigger you wont regret it
really diggin the new inlays and truss rod access
Umm… Rosewood vs. maple fingerboard? Which one's better? Ultimately, the one the BUYER likes. I'll have both. 😀
Your videos are so totally helpful!!! The way you guys play and the other twiddles the 'knobbies' is genius. And you play for extended amounts of time, too. I think you guys stumbled upon the best review process known to man.
I love lee and nathan. Favorite bass channel
What amp do you use? Elite, fantastic tone🤗
Came for the jams, stayed for the jams.
And I don't even play bass...
me neither XD
Does anyone have any guess how Lee has the elite set and EQ'd for the last section?? That tone is just KILLER!!!!
Love the jams at the beginning of each and every bass episode! This one reminds me of Snoopy and Woodstock for some reason from the Peanuts comics. The give and take between you guys when playing is awesome!
0:38 is my favorite part of the jam!
Joe Gilbert yeah man that’s an absolutely amazing descending lick, I pressed the button nearly ten times!
Even if it’s played on the wrong bass, haha
Ibanez SRMS806 6 String Bass Brown Topaz Burst. What could say about that bass compared at the fender jazz B elite 5?
If you are a guitar player like me and only need to have one bass...It has to be the Fender Jazz AVRI64 (which i own) THE definitive bass (even more so that a Precision...but i'm biased)...
Loved the outro jam. You guys are awesome!
Great review! However, I missed that no pick was usted. Wonder which one sounds better with it.
What strings are on these basses?
Great stuff! Pardon my ignorance, what is the outro jam based on? I'm presuming it is Jaco...?
Would put a smile on the face of anyone. Just cheers me up.
I would love to have an American Professional 😍🎸
FilippaQ played quite a few, my mim with a good set up still sounds way better, but it's still nothing on that 64'
Those guys jamming are out of this world :)
I would love for Nathan and lee to do a shootout of several brands, and see which is best for down tuning
Cual prefiere?
I regret to say that, to my hears, the AVRI 64 of the Chicken intro, sounded much louder and defined than the Elite ... I wanted to buy an Elite but now I'm hesitating ... is it due to the different skills and/or tastes of the two players? Did you hear the same difference?
Gianni Orlati some of those 64's have such a warm round tone, so much better than the elites imo
Gianni Orlati it’s called the elite for a reason
Bah.. I bought the American Original 60s... I'll let you know my impressions once I buy the Am. Elite which I'm waiting for a right-priced second hand option for ...
You guys play so awesome!!!! I think im gunna get that black elite instead of another stingray
Wish you guys hadn't used the maple elite jazz for the demo, the other option is the ebony jazz elite fretboards, which sound soooo much better. Wow, great rendition of The Chicken at the beginning!
Elite jazz or custom shop 60s jazz? Don’t know what to do
The Jazz Bass in the video is the American Vintage '64 not a custom shop.
I'm back again!! Lee give me lessons plz!!. That outro jam tho!!!
Killed the Chicken! 👌🏼👏🏼👍🏼
That last jam.
Which jimi hendrix strat should I get?
The one that's a Jazz bass

The fender was ok, but I preferred the fender.

KozmykJ “playing was fair enough...” 😂

Cool, sounds great
I have this same guitar and it doesnt sound as good. Why is that?
Cheers guys!
Lee can I get bass lessons from you??
Whats the song in the intro jam?
Chicken - Jaco Pastorious
OmnipotentWailord tnx mate
If you look up Soul intro/the chicken on spotify its the chicken bit but the soul intro bit is great as well
@TheAwkwardSilence135 Jaco not Jacob
@TheAwkwardSilence135 Yeah, it looked weird so I thought I'd say something just in case.
Very very very well.
I love this video sooo much!!!
'The Chicken' is to bass players as 'Stairway to Heaven' is to guitarist.
do your sire basses ship with the sire gigbag?
Only in the USA
some other regions of the world also ship with gigbags. Have you received a sire from andertons?
Loved jam! That's vibe!
Who disliked this?
The Chicken? :D
Jaco
Eo quote Phil X at Guitcon: Lee "Shut up and play bass!"
edit...To
Watching this with your volume off is more fun
Prefer the sound of the Vintage 64, but I'm not a fan of the bells over the bridge and especially the pups. They look cool, but kind of get in the way.
Jaco!
6:53 WTF!!!???
Bit of jaco
Nice
The Chicken hehe
The Chicken! Nice!
Was thAt the chicken
🐓🐐🐓🐐🐓🐐🐓🐐
Sound like rory gallagher or michael schenker from ufo.
Sound like rodulf Schenker from scorpions
+1 for the farting out of tune
guy on the left needs to stop interrupting the guy on the right. So distracting....
Anthony G I know right, he's not as good
That’s Mark Kings brother.... Mark reckons he’s a better bass player than he is.... hahaha....I think Nathan and Lee are super lads.... great rundown on gear.
Mark is a better player.......but Nathan is no slouch. I wonder what the bona fides of the critics are in terms of the 2 folks on the videos.
they dont know how to demo the elite 🤦🤦🤦
