This is actually one of his least impressive games, it's feasible that an intermediate player could do the same just by studying. I've beaten players more than 1000 points higher than me with opening traps. What I love about this series is seeing him slowly squeeze an advantage out of nowhere against extremely good players. It's something I'll never be able to do but having him talk through each thought is really inspiring
Great content. I improved from 1000 to 1450 in a couple of months just by watching Danya and implementing his concepts and thought flow into my games. It now seems that I hit a plateu and I am now learning some concrete opening theory to improve my repertoire. Keep up the good work!
This might be the most decisive and exciting win against a high level opponent we've seen in the speedrun. Really cool line and excellent commentary from Danya as usual.
I'm adding this to my bag. I play the Alapin often but never thought to throw the check in . But know I see how much potential poison there is in the position

Hi Danya, I’ve been absolutely loving the speedrun videos! The post-game analysis of the games are extremely helpful. I was wondering if you could do a full opening video of each of your opening recommendations (of the ones you played at the start of the speedrun and the ones you play now)? I know you go over some of the theory during the analysis but I think an in-depth video of each of the openings could be very useful. A bit similar to you “GM Naroditsky’s opening lab” videos you did on the Danish gambit and the King’s gambit. Greetings from Belgium!
The "trick" where 5.Bb5+ provokes 5...Bd7 leading to the possible line that you prooose: 6.Bc4 Nb6, 7.Bxf7+ Kxf7, 8.e6+ Bxe6, 9.Ng5+ Kf6 (best), 10.Qf3+ is perfectly defensible for black. As you said, white does not get a winning position from this line. In fact, Stockfish gives black a very, very slight advantage. White gets no big advantage other than getting a position that seems easier to play. However, I think this line could have a big psychological impact on the black player if he's unfamiliar with this line. Any time the bishop comes crashing into f7 with check, sacrificing itself, it is unnerving - especially if black has to play 9...Kf6. Black has to be thinking that this is bad for him - although, it's really not.
How long would it take to learn the alapin deeply, and how long would it take to learn an opening in general? I would also like to know what gms give priority to when studying openings.
Am I right in thinking the difference between the Alapin and the Delayed Alapin (with Nf3 first) is that the Nf3 line is even slower and more positional than the original (with the exception of some Schranz traps)?
this reminds me of this line e4 e5 kf3 F6 when you can sac the knight on the pawn and if black isn't careful enough he ends up being checkmated on the side of the board
He could have said one of these funny movie line when 2 characters pretend to play chess with each other: Slowly level eyes with the other guy and say: mate in 4
Yeah. One thing is that you loose easily just because you didn't think about consequnces. And it's very different when you thought about it, but other continuations did not look pretty too. I guess that's what is happening when strong players loose, and it must be a different feeling.
reminds me a little bit of the way WC Kasparov lost with the CK def vs Big Blue (in '01?) - he was angry possibly bc he lost a match and possibly bc he thought the programmers cheated giving the machine a book variation. A lot of us didn't understand that logic - why shouldn't a machine have a book line?
I don't think at low elo I ever lost to the alapin cuz I just push d5 and get my queen active if white takes. The white blocks his Knight with the pawn so the queen is big chillin
