  • CHECK OUT MY OTHER TWO TIM RILEY VIDEOS AS WELL!!!
A 6 minute 'video' of different clips featuring Tim Riley, and some of his lowest notes. There are some low C's, B's, A's and even G's here... VERY common for Tim Riley. If I included every song where he ever hit a note below the Low 'C' you'd be listening for hours! :) A low 'C' for this man is just in the 'normal' singing range.
Ok, after repeated requests... a song listing.
    1. :10 God's Building a Church
    2. :30 Angels From the Realms of Glory
    3. :36 I'm Not Giving Up
    4. 1:01 If God Be For Us
    5. 1:21 How Deep is the Water
    6. 1:44 Carol of the Bells
    7. 2:01 Shouting Ground
    8. 2:21 Where is God
    9. 2:37 There Rose a Lamb
    10. 2:57 When I Get Carried Away
    11. 3:11 Hello in Heaven
    12. 3:20 When He Reached Down His Hand for Me

Mr. Riley has always been my favorite bass singer. He might not have the lowest voice ever recorded, but his resonance is stellar. I've seen him live 3 times & he's a beast!

Do you know which recording has this specific version of when he reached down his hand for me? Tim sings it a little differently in this video than on the movin’ up album. I’ve never found the recording unfortunately.

He's da bomb as the new folks would say.
He does not use vocal fry.
Vocal fry makes the words unintelligible. You can clearly understand every word he's singing.
In my opinion, he is the best.
No other bass gives such a rich tone for the rest of the group to build their sound on.
Other bassists disappear into the sound but Tim is always there on his part blending his voice with theIrs for a rich full sound.
Sumner was lower but could barely be heard when the perfume the group were singing.
    That's my reasoning for saying
Tim is the best bass in Southern Gospel.

The name of the song is "If God Be For Us (Who Can Be Against Us)". I'm not sure which album it was on, but I do know it was a late 80's early 90's song. I had a tape that had it ... I think it was the 10 year or 15 year celebration.

@snoopyflick Tim is actually a basso profundo, which means "deep bass". I actually got to talk to him the other day and he told me all about it. He also said that he only sings with his real voice (i.e. no vocal fry, only chest voice). True, it's nearly impossible to be really loud on the really low notes because of how much power it takes to get them as loud as higher notes, but these lower basses can actually get this low and still genuinely be singing the notes and not frying/growling them.

I hear ya man. I have been listening to Gold City for about 10 years myself and have been an avid southern gospel fan for a long time. Tim's voice is unmistakable.
As far as the CD; it is a full CD. They released this album twice. 1st it was released without the 2 songs that we discussed. This was the one I ordered from their website. Then after Bill joined, they needed a product with him and Christmas was approaching so the quickest thing to do was change the cover and add couple of songs.

  • @virtuoso07
    @virtuoso07 16 лет назад

Actually, On the Gold City Christmas album it is Tim. Gold City recorded in a Hotel Room at the quartet convention and it was released right before time came off the road. Even though Bill is in the picture its not him on the CD. Bill's first CD was "Heaven."

My last post didn't quite look the way I wanted it to...
one of the things I like about Ivan and you know he's the real deal is the fact that video where he hits F#1 twice...both times he sings a LOOOONG phrase before singing the F#1, and he does it on one breath! The note is there and strong both times-it sounds a little funny because of different language but the pitch is certainly there AND strong, so, yes, you're right about Ivan-he's awesome and right there with the best. Just my opinion.

  • @GamingDrummer89
    @GamingDrummer89 12 лет назад

He told me something similar. He said that his voice just kept going lower whereas most other guys' voices stop after a point. The common age where you first notice these basses get lower than normal is 14 based on what Tim told me as well as what I read about Richard Sterban and Aaron McCune. Tim said he was able to hit a C2 at age 14!

I told my friend and he couldn't belive that the FIRST time I listened to the CD that I picked that out. Not sure on the note(I am no professional when it comes to that regard) but it is from a song called "Have you been born again" from one of Gold City's older albums from the late '80's.... cannot remember the name right now because I don't have my portable HDD(with all my songs) with me. :)

  • @floofytown

@TIGERSDFW Not a bit of vocal fry. Tim's voice actually goes down that low. Vocal fry has a distinct strained, throaty sound, like Tibetan Buddhist chant, or Kargyraa-style throat singing. As soon as you know that sound, you'll never mistake it for anything else.

Gospel music is not or should I say should not be about who's higher or who's lower. One thing to keep in mind is that Gold City has always sang in higher keys because of the tenors they have had through the group. Just listen to these clips. Gold City is my all time favorite group. @The336336336 Correction...The only well known bass singer who hardly ever does fry is Tim RILEY (aka the bass you hear in this video). It's not fry, he just has very crisp sounding notes (which is a good thing when your voice also has enough natural bass to it to shake apart a building).

I remember hearing Gold City's acappella album back in the early to mid 90's...I remember the bass singing the words..."OH...then the rest of the group was singing 'oh what a Savior'...I believe."
At any rate, I was so impressed with that bass. Of course it was Tim Riley. I just remember him just flat out RIPPING low notes. I can't remember the song, but I DO remember him holding out the word "Sky" with the rest of the ensemble and thinking "My Gosh-that's sooooo strong!" Back in the day.

I've heard Vladimir Miller before and Victor Wichianikov (sp) as well and they are VERY impressive. I'm convinced that Riley is one of those who doesn't need a mic based on resonance with such relative ease on the same notes as the russian bassos are singing. Riley sings in Southern gospel music where mics are used, and that's certainly not his fault. Of course, many of the churches that the russians sing in have great acoustics...if you have the resonance it matter not...mic or no mic...

Vocal fry mainly comes from the throat and the vibration of the vocal chords with very little if any of the note coming from the chest...this is opposed to modal voice, which comes from the chest and diaphragm.
You can tell the difference by the sound...everything you hear from Tim Riley (such as this video) is modal voice. On the other hand, when you hear vocal fry, it doesn't have the same quality or resonance...it sounds much weaker and you can easily tell it's all coming from the throat.

  • @TimothyFultz

On some of the songs, from GC's A Gold City Christmas album, that's not Tim, but Bill Lawrence, the bass from 2003-2006. They sound perfectly alike, and Bill was hand-picked by Tim.

ve heard Tim hit Eb's at sound check but chose not to in performance. Sterban and Youce has both hit those on recordings, but generally I think all three mostly stayed around G's or Ab's live instead of going lower live. Riley hit an F# on What A Glad Day on the recording, but didn't do it live on the Dove Awards performance I once saw.

Tim is really great, don't get me wrong, I think he is probably the best bass around right now, his low notes are so clean. However, listen to those tenors, mainly Jay Parrack. They are so great. Jay is one of my favorite tenors and some of these clips on this video show just how good he is, for example 4:20-4:23, simply amazing. I believe a quartet is only as good as their bass and tenor, that being said, Gold City is great!

He uses his microphone a bit to increase the volume. In his live videos he moves really close to the mic. But that's not very much. He is a great singer :)

I have a few songs from their new album, Moment of Truth, and Aaron sings quite powerfully on that album. His vocals have matured so much since Revival. It's incredible. Definitely the best replacement for Tim Riley. God's under control.

Sterban HAS hit G's live & on cd's & E's and Eb's on cd's. Not sure about live. He hit the Eb on one of the FTC Specials, but may be an overdub. He told me he couldn't sing that all of the time & had to come up with an alternate way of singing it. That's not to say he can't hit it sometimes live, but I'd say nearly no one can hit notes on either of their extremes night after night, day after day, time after time. Some days are better than others. Even J.D. didn't always have his double low C.

@bassman3294 actually i need to apologize to you, because I missed a little thing: the song O Come Let Us Adore Him is the last part of a medley song called Christmas Medley, from their album called Voices Of Christmas (1988), once again, I'm sorry...

IMO, Tim sounds incredible Acapella as well, so I somewhat agree with you there.

I actually only used a FEW of the notes for this recording... I made another one if you want to check it out. Tim is indeed incredible.

Then they're not real basses. Ingressive phonation can easily take a bass singer below the bottom of the piano.

Also, on "I want To Walk Every Day With My Lord"
He sings an F1 on the "I wanna know" line.
It's the lowest I've ever heard him sing.

my lowest note is a F two octaves below middle C to a G just above middle C without falsetto.with falsetto i can go up to a double high Eb

I actually prefer his C2s and B1s than the rest of his lower range. It’s just unnecessary to go that low and C and B are already ridiculous enough to resonate at that level

I just figured it out my friend! I bought the CD while Tim was still with the group and "Silent Night" and "O Come All Ye Faithful" are not on my CD. I just went to iTunes and looked at the track listing for the one they were selling when Bill joined the group. They added those 2 tracks after he started traveling with them.
I do agree with you though, there is no comparison between the two. Although Bill is a really good bass.
