14 years ago I fell in love with a video game. And this remix is my musical love letter of sorts to Warren Spector and the team of people at Ion Storm whose effort, imagination and eerily prophetic vision created what is, to me, the best game of all time - Deus Ex.
This 'cyberpunk adventure' appeals to me in many ways: the FPS/RPG hybrid gameplay is addictive, the dystopian environments are immersive and compelling, and the open ended nature of the different ways to play through the game were a revolution for the time (it was one of the pioneering games to introduce the 'sandbox' game style, and still considered one of the best).
But even more than all these amazing attributes, it was the story and underlying themes of freedom, power, technology and conspiracy that really pulled me deep into its dark dystopia. Nanotech, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence factor largely into the storyline of Deus Ex, which hints at an incredible future for humanity with these elements playing critical roles. Wow - right up my alley!
For this musical tribute, I decided to recreate and remix what I consider the best and most memorable track from the Deus Ex soundtrack, the UNATCO theme. I also took the liberty to blend in a few other musical themes from the game, and I think they fit pretty well. The goal with the song and the video was to capture the mood and feel of the game in a condensed 6 minute trip through gaming nostalgia. Hopefully, I've produced something of value for those who love the game as much as I do!
If you're a gamer and haven't played the original Deus Ex, please do yourself a big favour and go find a copy now! For me at least, it's more than a game, it's an experience - one that's stuck with me for many years, and one that I revisit on a regular basis.
And if you're a Deus Ex fan like me and many others, I hope my little creation inspires you to re-install it and give it another play through! Even if just to have a chuckle at Gunther's lemon lime conspiracy theory... :)

This song must be shared with everyone. Why contain it? Let it sound over the schools and churches, let the bodies dance up in the streets. In the end, they'll beg us to play it for them.
s' cool!
Yeah. Only when people really know what this little game stands for....and they'll never know. Only those who know, know.

I must fap. I must fap.
It's 2021 while I write this and this remix still stands the test of time just like the game itself does. If your still out there Cryonaut, and reading these comments, true art like this never ages and because of that, I predict people will still be listening to it in the decades to come. :)
Molto bene!
Hey, Lambonights - yes, I'm still here and I still do read every comment that gets posted on any of my tracks. Thank you so much for the high praise. I was thrilled when I had recently noticed my little musical tribute here had surpassed 100K views. I am just as thrilled to read your kind words - thanks for making my day! :)
Every time you talk about Deus Ex, someone has to reinstall it and play it. In this case, that someone is me. A great tribute to one of my favorite games of all time.
Ha ha - so true! And I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that this game never really gets 'uninstalled' on my machine. Glad you like the track!
CryonautMusic I totally agree with you, Deus Ex is one of the best game ever made ! The soundtrack, the story, the characters, everything is great in this game ! Nice work by the way !
snake74500 Yup - a near perfect game... aside from... some of the voice acting... :P
Not only you are reinstalling it at the moment..
Well I've just reinstalled it haha
For you who stiill listen to this music in 2023, there was something i can't explain behind this remix. more you listen to this, more you get deeper sensation about the intensity and it's story telling. Pictures and music transition are just perfect and magical at the same time, made us listen more, and more...
Hey, thanks so much! I'm glad you like my little video montage as well as the music. And I'm thrilled people are still coming back to listen to it so many years later! :)
I am prepared to do my duty.

Literally the best UNATCO remix I have ever heard.
And considering the insane amount of UNATCO remixes there are, that is quite a feat.
Wow - thank you! :)
Hands down the best
Hands down the best
You mean second best? I mean there is delay Lama one out there xD
You have a single fact...
I must say, the first Deus Ex game that I played was Human Revolution around 6 years ago and I enjoyed that game a lot.
But after that, I found the original Deus Ex, got curious, played it, and it quickly became 1 of my #1 favorite games of all time that I have played through several times now.
Truly a timeless game that ages like fine wine.
Agreed - the original game is something very special. But I've enjoyed all the other games in the series as well, even Invisible War, which was sort of the black sheep of the Deus Ex family. I'm still waiting for Square Enix to do a full-blown modern remake on the original. Wishful thinking, I suppose...
I beated the game just three days ago, and now I fully understood why it's so beloved and praised by many. Not only the gameplay is incredibly solid and rewarding, but the atmosphere and style is spot-on. The three endings still get stuck in my mind because all the implications each one brings to the table, and how much of a far cry they are from the overused "good ending/bad ending" structure we're used to this day.
A masterpiece through and through. And an excellent cover you made, of course!
The best UNATCO remix. Nothing to add
Thank you so much, Ryan - that really means a lot! :)
I, I...
@@Ezio999Auditore We...are one.
Damn those sneaky implementations of the hong kong theme and main theme
Haha - I was actually surprised at how well they fit together! Glad you like it! :)
after 23 years I play modern games to this day, but i doubt that any other game will ever cause such emotions that deus ex did back in the 2000. Technology advances, but man playing this game back in the day on my CRT... it changed my life.
I'm right there with you. Even with the wonky graphics and quirky voice acting, it still felt like entering another world. I miss those days...
2:52 Cryonaut you are a goddamn genius.
Why thank you! Undoubtedly the most intriguing conversation in the game, and it's not even part of any quest. One of my favourite elements of this incredible game.
Still the best of the series. It deserves a remake with this quality music!
Thanks so much, Toast Man!
a masterpiece cant be remade
I like your emphasis on the briefing section of the original UMX - sets this apart from the other covers. You also resisted messing with the tempo, which gives it a familiarity other remixes often lack. Well done.
Doug Gallivan Yeah, it's tempting to speed it up and mess around too much with the core elements, but ultimately I wanted more of a tribute to the fantastic original and less of a 'reimagining'. Glad you like it!
So I just beat this game for the first time EVER in my life and I'm now a fan of it. One thing I wanted to say is that I appreciate that usage of the dialogue between JC and Morpheus. It was very profound listening to that and it is very compelling listening to it with a theme that implies Conspiracy Theories. I especially love the part where you added in "God was a dream of good government. You will soon have your god. And you will make it with your own hands."
Hey, thanks for the comment! Those last lines gave me chills when I first spoke to Morpheus in the game. They still give me chills hearing them today, especially in the world we're living in.
@@CryonautMusic Quite so, sir. Quite so. Very prophetic, harrowing, and, for some reason, at the same time, enlightening and possibly hopeful?
@@oblivious108 I often wonder if the advent of an A.I "god" will be the logical conclusion of the exponentially increasing sophistication of A.I. And if so, would it become a benevolent caretaker of humanity, or would it consider us merely a pointless nuisance and eliminate us as its first order of business? Or something else we can't imagine? And could it happen in our lifetimes?
@@CryonautMusic There's a reason why I chose Ths Dark Age ending. And why I think it's the most ethical of all endings.... I'm probably going to get a lot of hate for that. Lol
@@oblivious108 I always chose the Helios ending because it seemed to me to be the most extreme course correction (or at least an attempt at course correction). I would agree that the Dark Age ending is certainly the most "human". I love that Deus Ex gave you that choice. Did you ever play Invisible War, the sequel? It had an interesting take on what happened after area 51 in the original game.
People don't give enough credit for how good the story was in DX and how well it went down. The rivalry between JC Denton and Bob Page is legendary - the suspense is heavy when you're trying to disable the Warhead in Vandenburg - but it grows even more when you reach area51. Bob Page is my favorite villain out of any videogame for sure.
Speaking of Bob Page, I definitely wanted to fight him at Area 51. Instead he chose to be stuck inside his precious force field.
+Shooter McGavin Well, Deus ex is still considered the smartest game around... (Unless I missed something). You can't give more credit than what it already got, everyone knows it's a game for Philosophers Over-thinkers and conspiracy theorists.Or just fans of the early stages of action RPG :)
Yair Barnatan A fellow Deus Ex fan? I still miss the game.
+Tony Chang (Tony The Changfilth) Deus Ex is a game that it's message only gets more relevant as time proceeds.
I'm a fan :)

In that case, feel free to watch ThreadbareInc's Deus Ex walkthrough. He even gives short college-level lectures about topics that the game mentioned but didn't have time to cover.
This is a labor of love, as evidenced not just by the quality of the remix, but also by what you've (rightfully) written about the masterpiece that is Deus Ex. Kudos!
Thank you so much, C.T.! This is the first time anyone has commented on one of my write ups, so I really do appreciate the kind words! :)

@@CryonautMusic
I've played this on the boombox many times at the jobsite in the last 2 weeks haha
This game....its just something else.
In a same way like first matrix movie was a radically different beast from its shallow action packed sequels, first movie felt more spiritual, semi religious and deep in meaning, it was as if movie was spilling out into our real world and makes u stop for a second and think about our systems of values, meaning and purpose of life.
This game did same thing. Its hard to explain now how much immersion power this game had in its prime day, It simply could not be compared to anything else at that time. It truly felt like living a life inside game. Warren Spector, who made game used to call it a immersion simulator, first of its kind to be realized.
Little did we knew back then, when we played this game that 20 years later world will turn upside down, and now we live in practical joke where this game is now playing us instead.
Very well said.
I absolutely love this remix. It has my favorite conversation, my favorite songs, all well mixed--good job, Cryonaut! Keep 'em coming!
Hey, thanks Herman! I'm glad I decided to leave the Morpheus conversation in there :)
Whoever gave this thumb's down deserves a silent takedown.

When I played Deus Ex: Human Revolution for the first time and I heard that repeating arpeggio from the original game it gave me chills. They made me wait for it and it was worth it.

That I know of as well. No surprise to me.
What a wonderful rendition! I also love the fact how you integrated my two favorite themes to a single song. I love the whole Synapse / Hong Kong Streets / Wan Chai routine as well.
Glorious, sir! And thank you :-)
Erik Forsström Hey, thanks, Erik! Yeah, next to the Unatco theme, the Hong Kong theme is a close second as far as memorable melodies go. I'm glad you like the track!
This was so entrancing I had no idea I replayed it the first time. 10/10, magical in all the right ways.
Possibly my favourite remix of all time. 10/10
Holy moly - thank you! Your comment is a 10/10 as well :)

Welcome aboard, RUclips comment.
Love it man - first played DX at 10 years old. I'm 31 now. I will never stop loving this game and my copy is a precious possession. Love the slower pace you took with this, it fits really well and a good alternative to the other remixes out there.
Yeah, DX will always be one of the top gaming experiences of my life. And a glorious trip through nostalgia every time I dust it off again. Glad you like the track!
@@CryonautMusic Guess what, I'm 33 and I still love this track!

Woah dude...you even stuck up the main theme of the game by the end...truly genius man!
Hey thanks - glad you liked it! Yup, I'm still working on new material - covers and original compositions. Been busy with home renovations lately, so music has taken a back seat these last few months. I should be getting back into the studio soon, though! :)

Morpheus dialogue = excellent addition! Kudos man, great great work!
The Best out there! Really well Done! This just has to blow up!
Ah indeed.. You made me re-install. This is the greatest game of all time. No other one has raised such hatred and resentment towards the state of the game world and some characters. And the feeling of melancholy it emits. Thank you, a remix I'm going to listen a few times more.
Yeah, that's the funny thing about Deus Ex - it's one of the few game worlds that affects me on a deeply emotional level. Every time I replay it, it feels like I'm 'coming home' to something special. It's dark and grimy, and the mood is pretty bleak all the way through... but I absolutely LOVE it like that!
the best combination/mix I've found for this song, thank you for this!
You're very welcome - glad you like it! :)
I have listened to this remix for years. Its so good.
Wow, thank you! I'm glad you keep coming back! :)
The Deus Ex series is a truly amazing universe. Part of me wishes we lived in this world but at the same time it scares me because of the conspiracies. Then again I would risk living in this world.
I commented a year ago, just gotta come back and say once again, this is the greatest remix of Deus ex I've ever heard. I have this saved on my phone and I listen to this often. It's so nostalgic and it really brings me back 20+ years when I first played this game. All I can say is thank you, this is amazing. It means a lot to me that you took the time and effort to make this. You kept the original sound and made the perfect remix.
Hey, thanks so much, Robert! I appreciate the kind words!
Just an amazing remix. Other remixes often just seem to add some distortion onto the original, but you not only added other tracks of the game into the mix, but somehow actually made it work.
Thanks, qwerty! I do what I can :)
R E I N S T A L L
This is more than a UNATCO the remix, it's more like a Deus Ex medley!
The best UNATCO cover, and I've heard them all.
Hey, thanks, completely random stranger!
As in the game, there's so much to do. So much to do... thank you.
oh dayum so good brought back dem feels
The layering of the JC and Morpheus dialogue over the song reminds me alot of the early releases of the bladerunner soundtrack. That all had some dialogue over it
Came across this last year. Still fire it up every now and then. Good job...
Extremely competent and enjoyable work, please make more of these! They are a joy to listen to. A version without the (albeit excellent) dialog section in the middle would also be great, or perhaps split more in shorter segments. Either way, keep up the good work!
JC Denton, in da fresh! All joking aside, I'm happy you like it! Yeah, I considered a version without the Morpheus convo, and maybe I could release a remixed remix or something. I'm also thinking I might try another hybrid composition of two or more Deus Ex tracks blended together, but I'm not sure how compatible the rest of the soundtrack is...

Sounds great! I'll look forward to see the results if you manage to do so. Creative freedom should definitely be applied, but aside from the usual knowns, I would suggest checking out the Ocean Lab one(s), I really love those too. Human revolution lost a lot of original DX dark shadow atmosphere.
Most of DX levels have night/dawn sky or are in dark tunnels. This is so atmospheric. Level designers of DX were pure geniuses.
Reminds mi little dark design of system shock 1 or Thief the metal age.
@@janbalaban5268 people just don't understand Human Revolution, the atmosphere is different for a reason, even the bums being dressed nicely is for a reason, the times were different, things were easier and more laid back, no diseases, riots or martial laws that make cities look like ghost towns, the only issue people cared about were terrorism and politics until the game's end at least, and those were "kinda" light compared to what was going on in OG Deus Ex, in other words 2025 was not as dark and gritty as 2050 in the Deus Ex universe.
People need to play the mod called Nihilum. A nearly perfect one with different, yet amazing music.
I enjoyed this remix. Nice work.
Glad you liked it! I'll have to check out Nihilum - thanks for the tip!

Thanks, Griffen! Yeah, that conversation was one of the most memorable experiences I've ever had in a video game, so I thought it was worth trying to incorporate it in there somehow. Glad you like it! :)
