with respect, it is a major sin to criticize anyone without full knowledge of their complete stance regarding an issue. When it's a believer who is the target of criticism the threshold rises considerably, and if it's a person of knowledge it becomes well nigh impossible. What then, about a world-famous shaykh? You can either have a faith-based civilization connecting you through unbroken sound chains to prophetic knowledge and true enlightenment or you can have modernist egalitarianism where navel-gazing is the supreme virtue. But you can't have both.
Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, from the good manners taught to him by his shaykhs, tries to get along with Muslims of all kinds. Yes, he is not infallible so his words sometimes misfire, but he is a shaykh (a depository and guardian of the blessed Sunnah) and does not need his intentions impugned by smug children who have not walked a single day in his shoes.
There is no upside in common Muslims giving their biological or knowledge elders a tongue lashing. This is a despicable Wahhabi/Salafi bid'ah damima (condemned innovation) started in Najd, and furthered and propagandized by the charlatans Syed Qutb, Mawdudi, etc. Even the greatest imams and Sahaba are not safe from the tongues and pens of these hypocrites and whoever follows in their cursed path. Such people are not solving anything, quite contrary to their over-inflated sense of righteousness.

With all due respect, his position on Palestine has been called out many times over the years.
Please do not take us for fools when we criticize where criticism is due.
Do some people go too far when criticizing? Sure.
But he tiptoes around Palestine in ways he doesn't tip toe around other issues.
We will not suffer in silence, we will resist in any way we can. We have tried non-violent resistance, we have tried protests, poetry, writing, marching, and still got killed (the latest example was the great march of return in 2018.)
He was called out a couple years ago when he said "if only the Palestinians laid down their arms and said to the world 'we are weak, help us' then the world would have had sympathy for them."
This is categorically untrue given that this was tried for decades and led to nothing.
Do not be such a fanboy that you close your ears when valid concerns are made. S.HY himself quoted Al-Shafi'i when he said that I loved listening to my detractors because it helped me learn about myself and correct myself where needed.
I've listened to Shaykh HY for years and yet I have no issue calling a spade a spade, and his stance with Palestine is wrong, shallow, and he is best to remain a quietist on this issue rather than muddy the waters.
Try finding all the Palestinian content he has across youtube and the world wide web, there is hardly anything.
It's an issue he is recently revisiting and learning more about (he recently read The Hundred Years War on Palestine by Rashid Khalidi). Also, I don't expect every Muslim to be a historian on the Palestine Israel issue, I understand it's not where Sh. HY earned his ijazah but if you're ignorant on a topic stay silent until you know enough to give an opinion to a people who have been oppressed for 100+ years.
His ties with UAE are rightfully criticized for they are leading the march of normalization, and his teacher Bin Bayyah has been criticized for sitting on such councils. Just because Sh. HY doesn't sit in on those meetings doesn't mean he's unaware of the country's politics.
At best he disagrees but cannot voice his disapproval for fear of losing funding for Zaytuna and other projects, at worst he agrees that it's better to normalize for more peace and less bloodshed will be attained.
How is it that Dr. Yasir Qadhi, Mohammed Hijab, Dr. Shadee Elmasry, Imam Zaid Shakir, Dr. Norman Finkelstein, Imam Omar Suleiman, Daniel Haqiqatjou, Dilly Hussein, and so many other speakers, shuyookh, duaat, and intellectuals all from various brands and schools of Islam or secular sciences ALL GET IT RIGHT on Palestine and yet he gets it wrong?
Ask yourself this before just blindly following any ONE scholar or speaker.
Masjid Al-Aqsa is not to be shared, not one inch of it.
The Palestinians have every right to defend themselves.
May Allah guide him and all of us to speak the truth.

Very well said. I don't think his opinions are to please the Americans so his college runs smoothly, though. I have had private conversations with him and he supports his opinions even more strongly in private. I read his essays and articles post 9/11 and I was saddened to find a lot of complete misrepresentations of Hadiths where he paraphrases a hadith in "quotation marks" deriving a meaning that most people won't even derive.
I loved him so much that I moved to his college for studies from Pakistan and it wasn't easy, but I have reached a point where I can't take a hadith or quote from him before I recheck it myself (bcz of how many times he has done subtle changes and half-quitations etc)

let’s think and speak the way God wants us to do so. now I’m not a shaikh but i follow the 4 schools of thought and my aqidah is ahlul sunnah wal jma’a (ash’ary, maturidy and hanbali ) if sheikh hamza was a wahabi i’d understand him saying that coz he’d be following the najdi movement but since he’s not
we must know this that if a muslim land is occupied by others jihad is fard ‘ain means anyone has the ability from the men must fight to protect now i myself am in a country where shari’a isn’t applied and we have to stand up and try to change it back to islam . but leaving this all aside may Allah help us and guide us to do what’s right . back to palestine there shouldn’t be a two state that land belongs to muslims the jews can live there and have lived there for centuries but they shouldn’t rule the place because we’ve seen what comes out of it, they’ve kicked a lot of muslims out of their land and don’t allow them to go back home while they were telling the jews come live here we’ll pay you just increase the jewish population here and they declared themselves a country illegally not just according to islam illegal no even the human rights watch calls it illegal settlement i think . so why would we compromise when we’re right and stronger than them . clearly they can’t hold off the mujahideen , they’re doing the fighting from a far by throwing bombs , so if our brothers and sisters are defending home from occupation and kicking out transgressors and most importantly it’s a fard upon the ummah to help them why would we recognize the zionist state ?! why would we say ok have your state there while they don’t want palestinians to have a state ?! Have you all not seen their master plan which to occupy palestine and some of syria if not all and some of iraq too ?! go and learn don’t compromise to the ppl raping your sisters and killing your kids and women and elders. Those same people judging him, should be asked to go fight for the Palestinians. Just because your not making the same kind of noise, doesnt mean u normalize things.

In the name of Allah, The ever merciful, the entirely merciful.
Master and Commander of that tremendous day of recompense, and who's knowledge encompasses all that exist in his glorious heavens and all that exist on his magnificent earth.
Who is it then that would dare to intercede without his permission ?
The Ummah is in disarray, we have no idea about courtesy, good manners and respect anymore.
There is a proper way to let your disagreement known without being offensive and rude .
There are different opinions on the current situation and they are all valid ones, but unfortunately ignorance prevails every where now.
I recently came across a video where a certain Muslim Personality was at his Dawah stall and a teenage boy approached in a manner which the Personality did not like, so he (the Muslim) threatened to hit the boy over his head for doing so and then orders him to take a Koran or leave the area...this is an example of the terrible state we find ourselves in and that incident speaks to where we are with our leadership and the lack of quality. That teenager was only looking for attention, he was interested but he was limited in his ability to express this interest as many boys his age are unable to do. A more tolerant approach was needed and that boy inshallah may easily have accepted or at least have a better understanding of Islam wherein he and those around him would benefit.
We are sent as an example to the none Muslims by the one most Supreme, Allah (SWT) and we must at all times adhere to the example set by the most Noble of all Prophets, Muhammad (PBUH).
Hamza Yusuf is an elder Statesman in this Ummah, he deserves respect ,I came to islam like so many other people through significant influence of Hamza Yusuf. His influence may have saved my life ...so impactful it was.
There is no other might or power except Allah (SWT) !

Wallahi i used to be in awe of this man, and he was a scholar i followed for years and years. I recommended him to people. But his whole stance and positioning on the zionist entity committing genocide on the Palestinian people is disturbing and petrude. As the ulema, we look to them for guidance and for them to use their platforms to speak up. Even for arguments sake, you don't have the courage to speak, and then you should remain silent. As soon as you speak on an issue and it's clearly against ijma, the responsibility lies with you as a senior scholar to issue a clarification. Even this video i watched in the hope of some clarification, but there was none. I'm so disappointed, and the audience is in some form of cult mentality.
He is a human of course he will make mistakes but the mark of a true scholar is one who realises the need to make murky things clear for the public.
And Allāh ta'ala, of course, knows best.

For those who criticise the great Sheikh- pause. Did you actually learn anything from his lecture? Have you listened to his previous lectures? This man has been giving khutbahs longer than some of you have been on this earth. Have some respect! I was like you- i heard that snippet and thought this man is clearly wrong. Then Allah swt taught me the error of my ways. Because of Allah swt I was guided to listen to his full lecture and past lectures too. I felt ashamed and disgusted at myself. This Sheikh is a sea of wisdom for all of us. His entire lecture was based on the actual meaning behind trials and tribulations-the reason behind them and the Quran and hadith teachings on fitnah. Listen again and do not dare judge this learned man. You will have to answer to Allah swt on the Day remember that. Do not slander a man of God.

@smillailyas3974 listen to the entire lecture. He talks about having sabr and the fact that we have to accept in a way that we are helpless in the face of Allah’s divine plan. He added that does not mean we don't keep fighting for Gaza but we need to look at ourselves and improve our worship of Allah swt too. And not just focus on Gaza, but Yemen, Syria and Sudan and every other part of the world where our ummah has been suffering for years and years. He is not siding with the zionists at all.

If people understood prophetic Islam like how Hamza Yusuf teaches it there would be more voices in support of muslim suffering. The sad fact is wahabi islam has been normalised and everything else has been called heresy. The hate campaign against this man is despicable

Everyone has their own way of supporting Palestine..not everyone has to stand up and walk the streets and protest or use their media platform whatever..shaykh Hamza has his own way..he wrote Dua Nasiri with Allah's will and dedicate it to the Palestine..now thats one..we dont know if he wakes up at 3 and pray to Allah..who knows?? Maybe he does maybe he doesnt
So stop the bashing other muslims just cause they dont actively participate in protesting etc cause we dont know what they do behind closed doors
