    Yes, Bakshi's adapation actually remembers to note that there is a 17 year span between Bilbo's party and Gandalf's return. To be fair, while men generally live to around 50-60 in Middle Earth (with the exception of the Dunedine and Numenorians, who are both taller AND more long-lived), hobbits generally live to be in the first half of their 100’s, sometimes even 150-160 years. 17 years to them is like 8-9 to us. Good as the animation is here and as much as I like this Frodo, I find the Jackson version of this scene much more impactful; in the Jackson version you get a much bigger feeling of "oh shit, this thing is an ABOMINATION" when Gandalf--a fucking demigod--is clearly scared to death of it to the point where he not only uses fireplace tongs just to avoid touching the thing, but freaks out just by Frodo trying to hand it to him. In this one, Gandalf seems more "crazy and weird" than genuinely fearful of the ring. I know that this one is closer to the books, but IMO that's one change Jackson made that was for the better.

    • @Tufhhuyy
      @Tufhhuyy 2 года назад +15

      This scene in the books is much closer to how Peter Jackson showed it. Though perhaps a bit more subdued, Gandalf's fear of the ring and its temptation in the movie is nothing compared to that in the books. In the book, he describes in great detail what happens to those who possess and use the ring.
      The only thing here that I really particularly found to be accurate to the books is the timeline, with this event taking place 17 years later, though I think it was 9 years after 8 years later in the book.
