The 26 is my new daily and a perfect travel bag. 4 out of 5 trips so far I've been able to expand, fill the bag, and then use the expansion super like a giant compression zipper to bring the whole thing back down to personal item size. I still wish the front pocket had some stretch to stash items at TSA but otherwise this thing has been perfect! Thanks for the excellent content.
The front pocket of last version with a zipper would be great. Make the top front pocket stretchier. Remove one of the bottle holders and turn it into a side pocket with zipper. Remove some of the structure from the back panel so it bends better to your back when worn (it's a clamshell so the items inside would give it shape anyways). Would be the perfect bag.
I was also thinking this!! In my head I was like what if I used it as a big packing cube instead of actually using a packing cube, since it functions in the same manner!
@@robertbrannan9375 it works great as one big ol ' packing cube. Just did another weeklong trip with only this bag. On my way home I bought a bunch of extra stuff and when I packed up I had to leave the bag expanded; by the end of my train ride to the airport I was able to compress the whole bag down again! I ended up using one of the bottle pockets to store my phone, wallet etc through security. The elastic opening kept everything nicely consolidated through the scanner but I might find a way to attach some kind of closure there for future use. Loving this bag more and more!
Thanks for the insightful review of the Osprey 26+6 Travel Backpack! Your focus on its practical features and organization is very helpful for potential buyers. I appreciate your effort.
Love the vid! I got the new 26+6 a few weeks back but haven't had a chance to use it yet. I prefer the new style over the old with the one, large compartment. Seems like the best all-around option for a personal item only bag!
I totally agree with your comments regarding the larger zippered pocket inside the lid. With the help of a local bag repairer I was able to make my own modifications using the inner zippered liner for an old small carry on American Tourister spinner I already had. Works fantastically. I will see if I can upload pics.
I fly 2-3 times a week for work and I'm loving the updated 26+6. My only complaint would be that the straps are uncomfortable walking extended distances with a 17 lb loadout. I really wish they had more padding or perhaps came out at an angle like the 35L version. I'm thinking of giving the sojourn porter 30 a try for a bit more comfort. I do have a frontier gowild pass kicking in on sep 1st and want to stay within their limits so I can make use of that when available. Judging by your review on the porter I think I'll be gtg as long as I don't over pack. I love the channel and you've been a tremendous help on my onebag journey. I'm able to fit everything I need to live for weeks at a time (with sink washes every 3-4 days) into 26L. I even carry an inflatable backpacking sleep pad/pillow and sleeping bag liner for airport layovers.
This bag has been the best $100 I've spent all year. I tried the Sojourn Porter 30 and I found it MUCH less comfortable, mostly due to my 16 inch laptop turning the back into the equivalent of a sheet of plywood. I think the shorter 26+6 helps the laptop lay better on my back although even sans laptop I prefer the 26+6. I've also tried the REI Ruckpack 28 and Ruckpack 40 but the 26+6 is still my go to travel companion although I don't care for it expanded (too turtleish) and am looking for something else for winter travel. Also mine does have the same ridge on the back. Haven't found it to be a problem though.
Great review. Based on earlier comparison of old and new 26+6 I ordered the same colorway as yours from Amazon and am very pleased with it. The 26+6 in my opinion is more versatile for my purposes. This new bag has the same stitching that is different to 35L bag behind luggage pass thru that you referred to but not noticeable when on my back and fully packed. Paired with a Timbuk2 custom messenger bag this is all I need for travel up to a few weeks. For travellers out of Australia with a 7kg weight limit used with lightweight compression cubes it fits all I need including CPAP machine and essential tech items. Simply amazing bag.
I got a 26+6 and had to return it because the luggage pass through ridge kept digging into my back. It looks like the overlapped stitching is a design choice and not a manufacturing defect.
@@OneBagTravels Can confirm - same with mine. Got it two weeks ago directly from Osprey. Luckily not an issue for me. Did not feel a thing, only noticed because of this video.

Thanks. I watched your first video which was great, but then after looking around I had a few new questions which this video answered. You read my mind! Just ordered the 26+6 from REI...

Great video as always! Does the new 26+6 have a bigger capacity than the old one? In your peanut test for the old version, it measured ~22l unexpanded and 28l expanded. Also does the new version taper in at the top like the old one?
It must then, I should compare them side by side but I got 26L in this one unexpanded and 32 expanded, so pretty close now. The top is rounded like the old one. I don't remember it tapering but I'll double check when I get home, I'm in Mexico right now.
I wish the 26 was more of a scaled down copy of the 35. Without the expansion zip. The 26 would fit slightly more in the same "personal item" form factor and also be slightly lighter. And the back padding just has to be a mistake. I hope they fix it in the next few manufacturing batches.
My final thoughts: based on this video and the one a month ago, I believe the old version 26+6 is better. The full use of the cover makes such a big difference. And the front drop pocket allows more "give" when packed full. The new zipper pouch will only bulge and put stress on the zipper.
The full use of the cover pocket need to come back in an update. I think that matters more than the position of the expansion. I personally like the expanison on the main compartment, but not at the expense of losing the full zippered lid pocket.
Packs that both hold as much as they claim to hold. How amazing is that! Especially the 26+6. As I understand the ASTM testing standard, bottle pockets can be stuffed with peanuts too in determining volume, but it looks like Osprey stuck with just the zipper compartments which I prefer. Would a combination of a 2-5 lbs plywood weight board (cut to the interior dimensions of your plastic bin) and shaking affect measurable volume? Peanuts snugly in the 35L vs peanuts in the measuring container?
Probably I could do a more exacting job with the measurements. Peanuts are a little squishy and can get deformed, I try to put them in the bag at the same density as I put them in the container, give it a little shake and press it down slightly to remove any large gaps. Plug most bags are soft-sided to some extent and can easily be over/under packed. It's not an exact science. I'm just trying to see if the listed volume is generally close to what the real volume is. Both 26+6 versions are good, the updates are minor so I wouldn't worry about that. Personally I think the style of this bag works better smaller, the bigger one keeps the same straps and structure but it's just bigger.

I like the Tomtoc better, for the size of the 35L it has almost the same structure and shoulder straps as the small one. Plus the front pocket thing I just don't like. This bag works great as a 26+6 but I think loses the functionality at the higher sizes. If I was going with a larger 35/40 liter bag I would go with the Navigator.
@@OneBagTravels You would go for a TomToc over a Patagonia MLC? I'm doing my first one bag travel, and I'm flying Alaska Airlines. Am I correct in understanding that the Osprey Daylite 35L would pass the carry on given restrictions 22'' x 14'' x 9'? The bag's dimensions are 10.24 x 14.57 x 19.29.
@@OneBagTravels oh wow. Thanks for pointing that out... I didn't notice that. Shame on me. I don't plan on packing much, a few T-shirts, shorts, and socks all rolled up for clothes. I do plan on bringing my 16inch laptop though. It's a galaxy book 3 pro 16inch, so it's pretty thin. Do you think I should still be okay?
did you ever do a packing peanut capacity/volume test on the topo designs global travel bag 30 and also the 40 liter bag too? i've heard a lot of conflicting impressions of topo designs's honesty with their bags' true volumes and discrepencies between their listed volumes and actual packouts. i'm interested in these two bags and trying to found if they honestly have the listed volume because their dimensions seem too small. thanks!
I believe that is because people are expecting 30L of space in the main compartment of the 30L bag, and 40L of space in the main compartment of the 40L. But Topo seems to be including the space in that smaller full clamshell pocket on the front that is about 2 inches deep. You can perfectly fit a 10L packing bag in that pocket on the 30L bag, so you have 10L + 20L in main for 30L. Hope that makes sense.
I got new 26+6 and straps are too close on my neck. Makes me feel nauseous. I am overweight: 5’9” 250lb but straps could be done ULA style and that’d be nicer. I wore pack at max length for back straps and that helped some.
Which one, 26? I'm curious how people's experience is between the 26 vs 35 because the strap connection is different. 26 seem like they would be much tighter on the neck/shoulder.
Not really, the fabric is DWR coated, so water resistant to a point, like it would probablly be fine in a light sprinkle, but anything more you'd need a rain cover.
This is *the* channel for the real data on bags. Thank you so much, thanks for keeping on keeping on, it's such an amazing resource.

Yeah, I have some older Cotopaxi bags but I'll be updating some reviews and comparisons soon with the newer Allpa model.
@@OneBagTravelsthanks!
did you ever do a packing peanut capacity/volume test on the topo designs global travel bag 30 and also the 40 liter bag too? i've heard a lot of conflicting impressions of topo designs's honesty with their bags' true volumes and discrepencies between their listed volumes and actual packouts. i'm interested in these two bags and trying to found if they honestly have the listed volume because their dimensions seem too small.
I haven't done a topo review since I've started doing peanut tests but they do seem small for the listed volume because they're kind of bulky
What do you think of the 44L?
I've only tried the 35 and 26+6, I like the smaller one better
I got new 26+6 and straps are too close on my neck. Makes me feel nauseous. I am overweight: 5’9” 250lb but straps could be done ULA style and that’d be nicer. I wore pack at max length for back straps and that helped some.
Which one, 26? I'm curious how people's experience is between the 26 vs 35 because the strap connection is different. 26 seem like they would be much tighter on the neck/shoulder.
Edited: yes, 26+6
the 26+6 is somewhat stowable… you have to maximize the strap length and stuff them into the half sized passthrough…
Yeah I've seen someone do that, good tip!
I would rather use the Osprey Farpoint 40 as Carry On than the 35 Daylite
Same, I like the smaller 26 size, but 35 I think can get to heavy for the straps/structure of this bag.
Water proof?
Not really, the fabric is DWR coated, so water resistant to a point, like it would probablly be fine in a light sprinkle, but anything more you'd need a rain cover.
Yeaaaaas!
Not much beats that 26+6 and still no north face base camp duffel xs review? 😅🥴
Lolz, you should see the stack of gear I still have to review, so many companies came out with new bags this fall, it's too much! 😫😆
