@@ShopNation I think it would be interesting to add in an actual number for expenses. I'm sure lots of people are thinking all of that income was profit, but I imagine between all those 3D printers, your new web store, materials for the shed/ other projects, and whatever else you are spending money on, the actual profit is probably far lower than most people would expect.

As an engineer, and handy-guy with mild general skills around my shop, this is so refreshing. I'm rooting for you to succeed big-time!
I ran a pure products business where I made half of what you made in a year, and ten years later I sadly had to shut it down. Bravo. You're inspiring me to start a new business with a better understand of how a content strategy can interleave with it nicely. I never needed that much to keep the business going. Something akin to what you're doing could have saved it.
Something you have probably realized is that the ‘big names’ in the build space are constantly getting new shops. One they get a bigger better space but more importantly they get to redo all the simple organization build videos with new twists. At this point I can forecast when certain RUclipsrs will get a “new shops”. You’re different; you are garage/home shop focused channel which is what I’m more interested in. Keep it up!

I’ve said it before but it bears repeating. One of the great things about your channel is the honesty. I love seeing the good mixed in with all the little mistakes. I love that you open yourself to the critics because regular shop “idiots” like me learn so much by watching your process. And honestly, it’s working. I pulled the trigger on the rigid saw and was happy to buy the dust adapter. Keep up the great work Travis.
I couldn't have said it better. I'm building a new shop and will be getting a new saw, and it will probably be a rigid just because I want to buy the dust adapter Travis created. Now if he creates another adapter for a different saw, then I'd have to give that a good look as well.
I got to be honest, when I saw the title I thought, “why would anybody put that out there?” Because in my house, finances and income don’t get discussed outside of the house. We’re just private like that, our kids don’t even know what we’re worth lol. But the way you did this, it seemed like a shareholders meeting, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. It was a very professional presentation by a gifted speaker. I appreciate your transparency with your “shareholders”. 🤜
I’m not judging you as individual but I grew up in a household that was the same way. Why was there always the stigmata about discussing it with friends or anywhere outside of the house? I feel like the more people discussed it the better they could get with money. If you are doing well I think a good job is in order and when you make dumb choices your friends should tell you lol
@@austinlewis1345 no offense taken and really a good question. Mainly because it’s none of anybody’s business lol. I view it kinda like a marriage. When someone complains on social media about their spouse, they’re inviting trouble into that marriage, meaning someone will try to slide into someone’s dm’s. You brag about a 6 figure income, folks will try to take advantage. One of my banks had a social media contest once for something, I told a bank employee that I all out refuse to like their page, again because where I bank is none of anyone’s business. We live in a time where doing something as simple as filling up your gas tank can compromise your bank account with a Bluetooth device attached to the pump that you’d never know was there. The bottom line is, it’s about protecting what you worked so hard to earn with the same ferocity you’d protect your wife and kids with. You start protecting your money like that and you just watch it grow. You’re less likely to spend it on stupid stuff that won’t benefit your household. And yes, folks won’t ask you for money as much lol. But it’s not about being stingy, it’s about protecting the most valuable tool you have, your safety net. I hope that explains my reasoning and I didn’t ramble too much lol.

Where I was coming from is it ends up where people don’t talk about saving habits, retirement habits goals etc. I don’t mean give everyone all your info and being cautious I would not call stingy. When people refuse to talk about money at all is how we ended up where most of the population has 10s to 100s of thousand in student and credit card debt. I guess that would be more of a parental or household thing. Idk 🤷🏻♂️. Just wish they taught the younger generation more about financial well being.
@@austinlewis1345 so debt is a problem, but it’s not a money problem, it’s a credit problem. I get student loans, right now I’m putting my daughter through college and it isn’t cheap or easy. It’s a good way to start a persons credit history, but it’s a costly way to do it. Most people view credit as money and it’s not. It’s debt. Debt, in my house at least, is viewed as a necessary evil and is treated as such. We reserve it for big things like houses and cars. My wife and I both keep a credit card in our wallets for emergencies. People tend to view them as money and shouldn’t. Another thing is, people are so afraid to sit on a car title or house deed because the neighbor got a new car or bought a new house, so they should too. Don’t worry about keeping up with the Jones. The Jones are probably one of those folks you talked about and are in debt up to their eyeballs. As far as retirement goes, look at it as a tax that gets held out of your paycheck, set it and forget it. It’s just what social security was meant to be lol. We taught our kids about debt like this. “You need $20? Well I’m going to need you to pay me back $25. That’s how interest works.” But dad that’s not fair! I only borrowed $20! That’s right. That’s how your high interest credit cards work. They learned that lesson lol. Now my 20 year old daughter just shreds credit card offers and throws them out. So yes, it does start in the home. I’d much rather look like the bad guy for a day or two than them have to overcome the same hard lessons I had to learn.

(As a mom and a grammy, I commend you for making it a point to include more time with your family as one of your goals for this year. Now I'm an even bigger fan!) PS - I finally pulled the trigger and am heading out in a few minutes to pick up my new Ridgid miter saw. My decision was based mostly on your completely unbiased review... and because I knew you had already created a solution for substantially reducing the notorious sawdust mess from this saw. I've already ordered your digital files and sent them to my son to print on his 3D printer. Can't wait to get that all set-up and see it in action! THANKS so much!

20 million views and 20+ years off grid and I have been teaching people about multiple streams of income I use so I don't have to work for other people for many years. I appreciate your honesty about your income streams and I would add some suggestions for people considering doing the same.
1- Being a full time youtuber is not going to make most people wealthy or replace a job. Very few youtubers make enough to just live off that revenue. I ran a local pest control company for many years while making videos and I do youtube to share my of grid lifestyle and help people not as a primary revenue source. It helps cover some bills and gives me some extra for buying stuff I need at the cabin.
2- I don't recommend getting in to paid promotions and contracts. A contract is legally enforceable and ties you to a company so you can not do honest reviews if that company or product turns out to suck. It also make your videos less credible to your viewers because they know you sold out and you are limiting yourself to promoting a product or brand. I do not do paid promotions and never will.
3- Get a website not a sales page on someone els's website. If your youtube channel is popular you are better off setting up your own website and linking to it. Google does not promote sites on Etsy or other selling pages but if your channel is popular your own website will get views and free promotion through google search. I have my own website and a store page on Amazon.
4- Use social networking but beware of spamming. I use social net works to promote my channel and product reviews but don't get all spammy. The sales pitch should not be the focus of your videos and people want good honest videos and will only go to your links if you have substance and integrity.
5- Help people and teach people. My channel has survived all these years because I make videos to help and teach people abut off grid living. That has built up a large subscriber base and many of my views come from off youtube on other websites and social networks. My subscribers stay with me because they have become friends over the years and I take the time to answer questions and treat them with respect as friends not someone I am trying to sell something to. If you want sustainable income streams you want long term viewers not click bait titles and friends not customers.
6- Explore other income streams and I started writing books about off grid homesteading and designing off grid systems and cabin plans for DIY builders. Those have become very popular and have helped a lot of people go off grid and that also leads people to my channel and website for more info.
Ok Travis, you seem like a smart guy and have the potential to really help people and at the end of your life it is a lot better to be able to say I helped a lot of people than I sold a lot of stuff- keep it up!
Ikea Section is the king of RTA in my opinion. Used them for my kitchen and bathroom remodel and everything went perfectly. The fully modular system allows easy reconfiguration and I can easily go buy a new door or drawer front if one gets damaged...or complete reface my entire kitchen in an evening if I wanted to. Plus the hinges and drawer slides are all Blüm so they work great

Hey Travis, your 2019 income video was one of the final videos I needed to kick off my channel in 2020. I started with home improvement, but that didn't take off. I made a channel about a niche that I'm familiar with, bike building, and the rest is history. I'm not a full time RUclipsr getting ad integrations and such, nothing on your current level but I hope to get there one day. Thanks for the inspiration.

I just ran across your RUclips channel today, and this is great information. Most people, like you said, dance around how much they made. This gives people thinking about doing the RUclips thing, a nice look into what they could make if they build their channel and don’t give up. which is very useful to everybody. Thanks for letting us peak into the circus tent by breaking down the numbers for us. That last goal (more family time) also has to have some measure on it. You could use monthly customer survey numbers from your family, weighing the numbers more heavily with your wife. This is one of my FAVORITE channels to watch! Keep up the good work!
Congratulations on the past year and positive vides through my end of the multiverse for the next. As some have mentioned -- Thanks for showing how to make mistakes disappear in a quick redesign, or become a "Feature" in the project. We all go wrong on occasion so knowing how to recover is great. Dude I love your cander no bull shit style of presenting how your business works and your expenses and how much you made. I just got my channel launched about two months ago I totally respect what you are going through. I had nobody to help me learn video editing and was scared to death of learning it and was frozen in fear for over 6 years it scared the crap out of me. I am not in it for the money I love to teach and want to share my knowledge I will never get even a sliver of your accomplishment. I am actually training for a new business right now that is going to make me a lot of money I just need to get off my ass to do it . The youtube is just a hobby . I got a video I am working on right now left over from last year on restoring a performance boat. Its kicked my ass . I dont expect to make any money doing this but its fun and I get to learn

Great info brother. I am not a "Tuber", but understand the commitment. From an ads standpoint as a viewer, I try to let them run to help support. Make a conscious effort that anything 30 seconds of less is painless enough. Over that....meh. Not sure if you have any input regarding those ad lengths, but some feedback. Which you have probably heard hundreds of times over.
Love the channel, even more since you are a fellow Ohio man now. The shed series was AWESOME! I suggest you continue to look for those type of opportunities with your shop greatness. My two cents.

I am new to your channel (binge watching last 4 months or so) and appreciate your delivery and detail. It appealed to the retired architect in me and here I learn you’re an engineer… of course makes sense now. If you are still wondering about the wisdom of leaving the day job ( besides the validation of a Corvette in the garage) I’ll leave this here for you. While I am an architect I went into building materials sales and became an Architectural Consultant for 4 decades before retiring. I kept metrics as you did in this vid and grew my annual revenues on average 50% yr over yr. It was a lot of work with many 70 hours weeks thrown in which my wife helped me manage correctly🙂. Bottom line is I made a lot of money (more than many of my client architects/engineers) I had a lot of fun too. I delivered presentations similar to yours and became a total resource for my clients in the process. You are headed in the right direction and I can almost envision you owning and running a large mfg operation some day. Keep it up and oh thx for some business ideas as a result of your revenue stream demo. Shop Nation has become my go to video channel.

Happy New Year! Your shop videos have always helped me out. I've watched the cabinet build series two or three times alone. However, I thought the cabin build series was awesome and really looked forward to each video. Soon, you'll need to build a building to house your 3D printer farm. Speaking of which, how much did that increase your utilities cost? I assume that you mainly run them at off peak hours to save on electricity costs. Looking forward to what the year brings!
Each printer only pulls about 60-100 watts of power while printing, so basically I'm running an extra 25 light bulbs. It's really not that noticeable. I run them 24 hours a day

Hey Travis, Thanks so much for putting these types of videos together. I like many think you do an amazing job and are super impressed with your editing and attention to detail, let alone the awesome content you deliver.
The above video is super helpful for those of us considering if/when we should take the plunge and try to make this work and how it all works.
Questions for you:
1. How long did it take you to reach 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours of videos watched? (Apologies if you already explained this, I watch your videos when they come out...and yes, I realize I am writing this 4 months after you put this one up :))
2. At what point did you start to try and monetize the channel? I have a channel that is growing and are very curious about the details.
