    She didn't really plant the seed, that smirk from Toranaga wasn't the first and isn't the last in the show...one of the few people who figured him out.
    She did negotiate for what looks like early days of the geisha districts, tho.

    Ok guys, so the next episodes are hard to interpret if you miss the little things. The conversation with Gin, lady of the teahouse is an example. There are a few even "weirder" decisions down the line that if you miss the context will make no sense (I speak from experience). Shogun does go deep into the "heart that you show to no one, not even the viewers)

    What Gin, the Lady of the Tea House, was telling Toranaga was not giving him advice but that she doesn't buy that Toranaga would allow himself to be ambushed like this and that it only makes sense if being ambushed is exactly what Toranaga wanted and that all this acting defeated is just for show.

      @KINGSUNA as someone who didn't read the book, this episode confused me. Did Toranaga really get caught flat footed here? It appeared to be the case. Is that how it was portrayed in the book?

    • @KINGSUNA
      @KINGSUNA 3 месяца назад +4

      @@ichwanbedwiner I didn't think he was caught flat-footed in the scene. In fact, I think she called him out, and implied that the treachery by his half brother wasn't completely unexpected. As you keep watching the TV series, you will see the enormous lengths Toranaga goes to to keep everyone off balance. In the book, he does in fact gain a great deal of intelligence from her, and her role is even more prominent in some ways. This is counterbalanced by his ability to keep her off-balance and under control as well.

    Bring on "The Abyss Of Life"! But dam..this episode is so tense isn't it? Right on the brink was the hope of victory for "crimson sky" only to have it go up in smoke. The Red Wedding is so impactful now it's used as a reference for treachery! Gin is such a visionary & the significance of her conversation with Toranaga was titled for this very episode. Planting the seeds of what we now know as the Geisha. And as for his death...it felt so meaningless, right? But as one quote will say soon "Life, like death..can have value."

    After watching your 100K special, I am eager to see where you move Shogon on your tier list for shows. You had it as an "A",.....not on the S list which surprised me. I have it sitting even with GoT. GoT would still hold the spot for me just because it kind of ushered in all the modern epic focus on TV culture and main stream youtube TV reactors. Shogun to me though is more rich with diverse culture balanced with brilliant writing and superb acting. It has been greenlit for more seasons, so maybe it will viably have a chance to be on everyones "S" list. I watched the original 80's series and loved it as well. So maybe i am a little partial to it. Congrats on 100K you two! and thanks for sharing your videos with us! :)

      The problem is that they have a high probability of going down the same road as GoT when they ran out of original material. Shogun S1 encompassed the whole book so what they do from here on out is new and not James Clavell's work so it could just go down the toilet like GoT post S5.

    • @jcarbajal7348
      @jcarbajal7348 3 месяца назад

      @@ronweber1402 Sure. But, it’s not really a problem until it is. Creativity can go both ways. Japan has a lot of history that the writers could resource from. I actually loved GoT season 6 & 7. My only issue with Season 8 was that i felt it should have been 10episodes so they could expand on the night king storyline further and close more loops they left hanging. The actual results weren’t really that surprising and actually made logical sense when you rationalize the characters and their paths.

    • @ronweber1402
      @ronweber1402 3 месяца назад +1

      @@jcarbajal7348 I wasn't really disappointed with the destination but the short cuts they took. All of season 8 should have been the lead up to the Battle of Winterfell and even a season 9 and 10 to give Dani a longer fall into madness and more story centering around Bran and his being the Three Eyed Raven.

      @@ronweber1402 ***BOOK SPOILERS***
      It’s hard to see what they’re gonna do with two more seasons because there’s plenty of plot outline from the life of Tokugawa Ieyasu after Sekigahara, but other than Toranaga and Blackthorne most of the characters would change.
      I don’t know how they’d replicate the magic of Mariko. And people might be disappointed because there’s no logical place to include Fuji now. The book leaves her 20 days away from taking her own life, even though she’s probably pregnant with Blackthorne’s child.
      Ochiba could return. Omi possibly, but since they didn’t really include much of his wife, Midori, and they didn’t use the bit where Yabushige’s final requests are for Omi’s father to die and his mother to become a nun so they’ve left themselves a lot of character development to do if they want to pick up his arc.

      @@ronweber1402 I can certainly agree about Season 8. We had all 7 seasons leading us to what was supposed to be this massive worldly battle, but it was over in a night with no Jon Snow or Night King faceoff. So i get you there. Dany’s path was evident, but just way rushed. Thats why i mentioned they should have had the normal 10 episode season… not this shortened fast tack ending they gave us 👍

    I think toranaga's conversation with gin was read completely wrong. She isn't offering to help or advise in any way. Gin is ambitious and wants to expand her business. She begins the conversation by saying that she wants to establish an official red light district in edo with her brand of tea houses where courtesans are as much entertainers as they are prostitutes. She sells the idea as being a good thing for courtesans who become too old for sex. When toranaga refuses, she instead issues a veiled threat. She reminds him that she too has learned ambition and guile through surviving hardship. She in a very round about way points out that she knows toranaga has a plan in motion dispite his acting and levels a vague threat to expose him. She basically takes full control of the conversation ending it on her terms. Toranaga then bends to her demands setting aside land for her in edo.

    • @LaCheeserie

      I never considered it a threat, more of a ‘I know how cunning you are, so cut the bs, you will survive, so give me this opportunity.’

      @@LaCheeserie people like toranaga don't just give things of high value away for free. Gin revealed that she uncovered a part of toranaga's secret heart, something Rodriguez described as a "heart a man must keep hidden if he wants to survive". For toranaga's plan to work he needs everyone to believe he will surrender. The fact that gin has deduced as much and is in possession of such knowledge is a threat. He gives in to her demands because of this.
      The conversation between gin and toranaga is essentially a well written version of "i know your secret", "what secret?", proceeds to procure sensitive information, which is responded with "what do you want?" that frequently appears throughout media.

    Now that I watch this back, I think I see the theme, reflecting back on Yabushige's fascination. We're taking a moment and seeing what everyone is truly like before death.
    1. Yabushige hates being bottom of the pack, and regardless, he is; a sniveling coward of a man who struggles to find the side he'd best come out alive with. In the idle time, he takes a moment to.... let's just be plain and say "bully" John, who is a mere child with the sword compared to him. He wants to prove to himself he is at least superior to someone.
    2. Buntaro sees in a moment the opportunity to kill John in a fit of passion, but his duty, core to his being, stops him. He goes to ask permission from his lord to do it.
    3. For Mariko, she has given up long ago, its clear she has been waiting the longest for this death. By her father's parting words, only her duty remains. And because of her duty, she continues to live a life where what she wants is entirely not allowed to be given. She stays with Buntaro, states her life is his to take, and asks again that she have permission to end her life even when it is certain it will end soon.
    4. Toranaga is ready for death, and stoically surrenders himself to go to Osaka. He is suspiciously cool about it, though he doesn't make the motion to surrender lightly.
    5. John, ever the westerner, is more like Yabushige than he'd care to admit. He's still frantically looking for a way out, anyone he can talk to, or side with will do if it gets them out of this bind. And he resents Toranaga's apparent giving up.
    6. Toranaga's son, brash and young, wants meaning to his death, as he's not yet done anything great. He makes a final gamble to save his father and his people by force, with a short-sighted assassination attempt.
