During quarantine, I decided to watch Fully Loaded, since I remembered watching it in kindergarten, and I fell in love with Herbie. I was kinda scared to watch the originals though, because I was worried that the old effects and the editing of that time would make Herbie not cute. Now, however, The Love Bug is my favorite and me and my little sisters all love Herbie.
I'm so happy to hear that younger generations can be brought into the family even with Fully Loaded, my least favorite of the films. As a child growing up in the 90's, Herbie was a fourth beaten franchise with a "made-for-TV" movie in '97. I really had no concept of special effects or CGI, which was in its infancy, and Herbie just seemed absolutely magical to me. Truly the only "Disney magic" I've ever actually felt. It just seemed so raw, visceral and real, and now I know why - because they were actually filming full-sized, full-action shots; all the danger was absolutely real with the stunts and speed. I always assumed they were speeding up the film and telling other drivers to go slowly, but they actually souped up some Beetles and filmed these shots at speed. It's just like watching a good magician doing slight-of-hand tricks, because that was how special effects were done. They were real. Partly why Fully Loaded was annoying for me, because of all the CGI. Anyway, not to rant, but I will rave about how much I loved Herbie. It's the main reason I got into cars and work on them today.
Despite being born in 2000 I grew up watching this movie I remember when herbie fully loaded was upon release and to this day my dream car will remain a 63 bug like herbie to this day I still watch the herbie movies and it never gets old he really is that lovable bug
I still remembered, when I was about 4 years old, I saw a small scene of Herbie Fully Loaded in TV, that was the scene where Maggie bought Herbie from Junkyard. In that time, I know nothing about Herbie, so I thought that's just a scrap car, I think that was 2006 or 2007 when I saw the scene (and my age was 3-4 years old in that time). Now, on 2018, after 11 years, I'm now realized that the car I called "Scrap" 11 years old is a Legend (and still)!! From then, I became a Herbie crew, and Volkswagen Beetle got a big place in my heart!!!
The story of people patting the Beetle when they had the casting call for the car made me cry. I can't imagine the Love Bug being anything other than a VW Beetle. Any other car would definitely feel cold in comparison to the character and cuteness the Beetle has in it's appearance all on it's own. My grandparents introduced me to the Love Bug films as a child and I loved them and Herbie. Still do.
Casually in tears. Crying over the car that I first fell in love with. My mum had a Red VW Bug and we had him until sadly had to be sold a few years ago. Still breaks my heart. Still get upset. Herbie films help put a band-aid on my heart.
Thank you for sharing this documentary about my favorite childhood movie. Herbie The Love Bug is a national treasure! I wish there were more old vw's in my state, I'd love to build a Herbie.

As a gen Zer, I still love this movie... I remember my grandparents and relatives putting it on for me for the first time and I fell in love with it... And I've recently been researching the development history of it and it's been a joy
Hard to believe that what has now become the cars name (The Beetle) has become so synonymous with it. Volkswagen never actually called the car the Beetle and although the German name for it (Kafer) means beetle, it only had the designation Type 1
Also, a lot of people mistakenly think it's a person's name. It isn't. It's a marketing term coined by Hitler (yes, der fuehrer). It literally means "The people's car." He wanted cheap, reliable transportation for working class Germans. Unfortunately, its Nazi past cannot be denied. The VW was partly the brainchild of Ferdinand Porsche, who was known to be a member of the Nazi party.
When the scene of Herbie wants to throw off the bridge I cried Herbie😭. I love this movie the first time I saw it was on December 4, 2021 and I am 43 years old😁 please put subtitles in Spanish❤
Herbie was in the movie from 1969 to 2005. In the last movie, in the last scene, Herbie was racing on the track in the NASCAR NEXTEL CUP SERIES in CALIFORNIA SPEEDWAY.
Considering how the wheel was attached to the drum brake, and how the wheel loss stunt played out, both wheels should have fallen off at the same time. That, and the stint defied real physics of how the wheel falls off of a pre-1968 Volkswagen; this is from personal experience.
extreme attention to detail , introversion , very mechanical and perfection .. this made me smile , as i have asperger syndrome (autism) and these are common traits in autism (i don't say that the supervisor was autistic , because we dont have enough evidence but that was just a fun fact to mention so don't get me wrong thank you :p )
*Here's a weird and kinda sad thing I noticed:* The female leads are the only cast members from the first three movies that are still alive. Michele Lee, Stefanie Powers and Julie Sommars all outlived their costars.
It was 2006, I was 3, my town had a drive in theater and the were playing the original love bug. My parents said that I loved the movie with I still do. But evertime I saw a old beetle, it was herbie to my little mind. As fate happened in my grandads barn, there was a powder blue 1965 Bug. When I saw that car It was as you guessed, Herbie. Well my paw (grandad) managed to talk my step great grandpa into keeping the car and giving it to me. I've had that car for 17 years so far and I haven't restored him yet but I've turned down lots of money for that little car. It will be turned into my own herbie. Yall have a good day or night. Thank you for reading a small snippet of my story.
8:34… This frame shows a shot of Herbie's dashboard with no gas gauge (between the speedometer and the radio), proving that 1963 was not the only year of bugs used to make the Love Bug movies.1961 was the last year they made bugs without gas gauges. Actually, any 1958 to 1963 sunroof bug can be made into a Herbie without prohibitive cost, for close-up scenes lasting more than a split second. In this split second shot, most people are not likely to notice the difference. And if they did, most would not care. Why? Because the difference is insignificant. This is why no split window or oval window bug was ever used for any close-ups lasting more than a few seconds. The difference in the rear window would be too noticeable to the average viewer! 19:43…The one on the right does not have the correct rear deck lid and license plate light, but instead has one which came off of an oval window (1953-1957) bug. Whereas, the one on the left is a righteous Herbie!
The one on the right at 19:43 was a 57 converted into a 63! They cut the rear oval to make it like that of a 63! The deck lid was correct for that car! It was the 10th Herbie used in that film and is actually one of the few surviving beetles from the movie!
One of the best car movies, ever! Those are definitely Cal Club region cars. Would love to know who owned each respective race car. Some may have been from SF region as well.
