Because TV stations change affiliations at times. In Salt Lake City, KSL used to be the CBS affiliate and now it's the NBC affiliate. KUTV used to be the NBC affiliate and now it's the CBS affiliate. ABC 4 Utah (KTVX) has always been ABC. KSTU (Fox 13) has always been FOX.
NBC had the rights to both League Championship Series in 1989. Game 5 of the ALCS (Oakland vs, Toronto) was necessary and since Game 4 of the NLCS (Chicago Cubs vs. San Francisco) was scheduled to air at 8 PM, it led to the ALCS airing at 4 PM. This led to a problem with NBC, as a couple of NFL games were scheduled to air at the same time a the ALCS. Since, Kansas City was the road team against Seattle, by NFL rules, the game had to be telecast to the Kansas City market. WDAF, channel 4 (then NBC affiliate, now a Fox owned and operated station) opted to show the ALCS, that led to KMBC TV Channel 9, an ABC affiliate to buy the rights to that game.
@@seancaruana4209 they chose the ALCS (with no Royals) over the Chiefs? Did they think some kept their loyalties to As even when they moved 20 years before?
NBC was under contract with the MLB for tv rights, including alternating the postseason series and the all star game with ABC (as per the 1976 agreement). In short, NBC got the World Series in even number years, ABC got the Series in the odd number years, with the inverse going into effect for the All Star Game and LCS. In 1989, NBC had the All Star Game and LCS. Since the ALCS (Oakland vs Toronto) went to 5 games, that game wound up airing at 4 PM, thanks to game 4 of the NLCS (Cubs-Giants), scheduled for 8 PM, which, as a result, displaced the NFL games scheduled for that time slot on NBC. The NFL broadcast rulebook says ALL road games are broadcasted in the home market of the team in question. Since the Chiefs were on the road in Seattle, this meant that someone in KC had to air the game. WDAF, the at the time NBC affiliate, elected to go with the ALCS (can’t blame them, Baseball playoffs ALWAYS gets higher priority than ANY NFL Regular Season game), this meant that another station in the Kansas City area had to air the game. KCTV (CBS) was out of the picture due to coverage of the NFC package, which led to only one logical choice, KMBC. This was the last season of NBC’s original run of MLB telecasts, as CBS Would take over full time starting in 1990.
Your channel makes me happy.
Thanks for another great game upload!
Would love to see Hawks go back to rock'n those unis.
Good old days.
Do you have any Bucs games you'll be posting soon ?
Look how far the stands are from the playing field
Classy Seahawks jerseys and logo. The Kingdome sucked, though. The great Don Criqui :)
He was sooooo underrated
why was An NBC game on an ABC station?
Probably because NBC was also covering the 2 MLB Playoff Series that afternoon & evening.
