The losses for the Australian Merchant Navy in WW II was one of eight mariners.
During Desert Shield I sailed with 4 WW II merchant mariners who came out of retirement to help crew the ships going to the Persian Gulf.

Powerful. Never to be forgotten. Some people don't seem to remember that some people gave their lives so that other people could live their lives.

The ability to construct such a fleet was amazing. We can't build a frigate on time anymore!

That crack about shooting Admiral King probably was made at least once by any and everyone who had to deal with his irritating nature.

Why is the role of the United States Coast Guard on D-Day always overlooked?

Probably because in wartime, the Coast Guard operates under the control of the Navy, and too many historians are too lazy to pay attention to that. Guys like my late Uncle Bill, on the other hand, were VERY conscious of it. He once commented that, “As much crap as we gave them, there’s no way in Hell I’d have had the nerve to do their jobs (handling the majority of the amphibious craft going to the beaches, and crewing the cutters and destroyers that provided the outer screen against kamikaze attacks).”
