    • @DamienDarkside

@@ARC117Studios It means that if only a child mind can appreciate a story, it isn't a good story. You can entertain a child with colors and sound, but to take that and be able to have EVERYONE enjoy it regardless of age makes it a superior story for children in the end. Basically, just because you're an adult doesn't mean you can't enjoy a good story that is focused for a child audience. Disney has proven this multiple times with their own films that they have the capability, they are not doing it.
We also as an internet society just got over an entire decade of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic being dominant on the internet. That was a children's show that had a vastly large adult audience due to it's writing and animation not saying "eh, it's just for kids". Bluey is now this decade's version. Both shows are drastically different over the countless kid's shows that premiered, then failed, in the exact same amount of time.
There is a reason why people from 12 to 72 still read and enjoy The Hobbit, regardless if they proceeded to Lord Of The Rings at all. It's a tale that was more geared towards children, yet enjoyed by all.

@@TheReal_JG Once Upon a Studio gets the celebration of the STUDIO completely right. Seeing so many forgotten characters all in one place was magical. Jim flying with Sisu through the halls, freaking Pete's Dragon with the boy from Rescuers Down Under, seeing Mickey with Walt's statue when Feed the Birds kicked on had me tear up....Thomas O'Malley, Chicken Little, BLACK CAULDRON CHARACTERS WERE THERE. Do you know Walt Disney himself, and the company itself through 2010, would allow the writers MONTHS to work out the stories? Walt once threw out six months worth of work by his storyboard artists/writers when it became apparent to them and him the direction of the film wasn't working. (Pinocchio was delayed because they weren't happy with the character design). A writer on Toy Story 3 took six weeks to unknot a story problem and everyone was cool with that and liked his solution. Now, things are rushed through to feed the content pipeline and there's no time given to put something aside, ponder it, and rework it if necessary.

Disney held himself and the company to a high standard. People love pointing out his flaws but if they did a SHRED of research on the man you'd be rather impressed with his work ethic. Mickey himself way only created out of necessity after losing Oswald. But he took that success and made sure Mickey was a very likable character who wasn't entirely perfect and got into mischief; that's how Fantasia came to be. They wanted mickey to get back to his roots and the spotlight.

I was raised by my Grandma, sitting on her lap as she sang classic Disney songs while playing the piano. We watched VHS copies of everything from the 30s to the early 80s, it was my everything and Robin Hood '73 is still my favorite animated film of all-time. I'm kind of done accepting "it's for kids" as an excuse. As Jeremy said, there's a difference between movies for kids and movies for families- but even old school Sesame Street had references and jokes that made parents who were in the same room as the TV smile, and understood how not to make those same parents grit their teeth and mutter "it's for the kids" under their breath. Kids AND adults deserve better, and even post-Disney+ Disney should understand what makes parents decide not to put a particular Blu-Ray in someone's stocking.

Weird how Jeremy didn't review Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, thus not referencing it at all, because that movie fits the whole Wishing Star concept way better than what Wish did. I mean, it did everything right. Jack Horner is the unabashedly villainous character that Magnifico thinks he is. The goat is the annoying sidekick character that Perrito avoids being and becoming a beloved character in his own right. The love between Kitty and Puss, and the familial bonding of the Bears and Goldilocks is felt deeply by the audience, unlike the "friends" in Wish. Hell, we even have romance, unlike in Wish.
TLW is enjoyed by all ages, where Wish is likely to be enjoyed only by small children who just like to look at pretty colors. TLW would have been the perfect 100th anniversary movie for Disney that deals with that one line from that one song about a wishing star, if only they had the creative capacity to think of it.

One thing I really miss in Disney films is their ability to TEACH things. I recently showed my friend my favorite movie ever, 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame', and there were so many times where she asked, "What does that word mean?" Like, the vocabulary in that movie, as well as others ('Lion King' also comes to mind) is extensive and so well integrated. As a child I loved figuring out the difficult words based on how the characters delivered the lines. When my friend kept asking that question she wasn't upset she didn't know what the word meant - she was excited to learn something knew and see how they used it in the movie. Frollo and Scars' vocabularies add to their sinister nature, that they're these educated characters who knows what they're doing and are master manipulators. I like fun villains, but for this movie I'm kinda upset that the King is indeed the bad guy. Like, the concept that you can't/shouldn't answer wishes can be really deep (heck, 'Bruce Almighty' touched on it lol), but it sounds like he's just a generic, power-hungry evil dude :(

Hunchback wasn't their best movie from the 90s but I really loved it because of the risks it took. I was really intrigued that they would explore Frollo's internal struggle between staying true to his dogmatic religious beliefs and thereby suppressing his own sexuality, and his pure unadulterated lust for Esmerelda. Even Quasimodo had internal struggle with his sexual attraction to her but he ultimately let go of it in order to maintain his friendship with her and Phoebus. What a refreshing and mature story for an animated feature. (Sorry, it's been a while since I thought of this movie and your comment brought it back)

When the Disney renaissance came in the late 80’s to 90’s, Disney hit a winning formula. Story telling, visuals and music was at the forefront. Even when Disney branched into non musical movies like treasure planet and Atlantis they still held a gravitas that is no longer there. Villains were villains. We wanted to basque in the delicious evil of the Villain’s and see the hero’s win. There was a balance. True evil was conquered by true good. Even the classics like snow shite, Cinderella and sleeping beauty were not afraid to show the darker sides of story telling. To be honest, new Disney has thrown that formula out. Less is more, but new Disney is just more, without substance, without heart, and without risk. The reason Pixar is so enjoyable, is because they cater to the whole family. They are not making a kids movie, they are making a great movie that happens to appeal to kids. Big difference.

Why have film companies just completely forgotten about that it doesn’t matter how long it takes to make film, all that matters is that the film turns out good! If a movie is good, it’s likely that people are gonna watch it! Many people today don’t care as much anymore about deadlines, THEY JUST WANNA SEE A GOOD MOVIE!! Plus it gets people all the more hyped up when the movie does eventually come out! Last spring, I did a marathon of all 61 Disney animated films. Personally, I prefer the hand drawn films over the cg ones(Tangled, Frozen, and Zootopia being the highlights of those).
I think my favorites of the hand drawn ones are Pinocchio, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty, Hercules, and Princess and the Frog.
It honestly makes me sad and disappointed that evidently they couldn’t be bothered to make something really good with Wish. If they really wanted it to stand out, they should’ve ironed out the story and the songs, and perhaps had it be hand drawn. But what do I know?
As a side note: watching all those films did make me revisit wanting to become an animator(which was something I wanted to do when I was younger). I’ve drawn a ton of new ideas, and even done some very very basic animation.

It's still the typical Disney-style animation which makes people wonder why they would try to replicate Spiderverse and Puss in Boots 2 at all

My 5 year old nephew was over for the first time in a long time, and after a long exciting day we wanted him to wind down a little for bed, so we just slapped on Snow White and the Seven Dwarves because old Disney movies have a far gentler style than new kid shows (overall, I know there are dark moments).
And holy shiz, the amount of heart and soul in that movie is staggering. I remembered hardly anything of it from when I was kid, but it’s beautiful.
My dad and I were complementing the animation of moving water, and how the animators balanced the more realistic human characters with the cartoonish dwarves. The surplus of little animal friends are adorable and clearly have their own personalities. The Evil Queen is creepy! Every minute there was something I appreciated and enjoyed about the movie, despite it being made decades ago.

I wonder if it's indicative of the current work culture at disney that a lot of their modern films seem to lack deep friendships and ongoing family relationships. Or even just scenes of the characters being happy and relaxed and slow. Disney protags all move so fast all the time, they only slow down when theyre sad or think theyre failing. And their stories are all about completing a task. The older films the characters would sit and smell the flowers and enjoy nature, and there was behind the scenes footage of the writers and animators doing the same to capture it. Its like the production speed is so brutal now that the creators arent able to inject real love and happiness like that, because they dont have time in their personal lives to experience and think about it.
I havent thought this out all the way obviously, but there's something missing now, and i wonder if that's part of it.

Favorite is definitely Hunchback of Notre Dame. The music is epic, really only rivaled by Dreamworks’ Prince of Egypt, the art direction is stunning. Villain is terrifying and grounded and has the best villain song. They diverted and changed enough of Hugo’s novel to make it Disney friendly and not boring, but kept a lot of the maturity and darkness so it’s great for children to revisit when they are adults. It spawned an even darker and more epic stage show in Berlin in 1999 (and then they kinda over baked it and and added and changed too much in America in 2015) but the movie remains one of Disney’s best and most controversial

From my perspective, I thought the songs were good. Not all of them are perfect, but good enough. "This Wish" and "Knowing What I Know Now" were great. I didn't enjoy the villain song, though. While catchy, it wasn't sinister enough to consider it a Disney villain song.
Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine's performances were the saving graces for the film though.
They focused more on the nostalgia more than the story. I thought it was nice, but it did affect the story a lot.
The nostalgia isn't the key to make a Disney hit though, it's the story that matters. If they focused more on the story than the nostalgia, this movie could have been improved a lot.
Plus, the storybook-look for the animation was a good try, but needed some work. Its animation wasn't bad, but not as good as the Spider-Verse films.
Overall, to me, this movie is nowhere near "Chicken Little" or "Home on the Range" territory, but it was not as good as the other modern animated Disney films since "Tangled" was released.
    My score is 7.5/10
