When I was at Art college, my illustration tutor told me that the 3 hardest things to draw are hands, water, and pine cones.I can draw hands, I'm getting better at sketching water, but pine cones are incredibly difficult to draw, because they are so asymetrical. But you captured that Redwood pine cone really well, Vanessa! The bigger pine cones, that stand on their flat bottoms, are truly challenging to sketch - they have all these hidden depths and deep shadows. That is the great joy of drawing, isn't it? It's never dull, because you are constantly learning new ways to capture something on paper. You should put that little pine cone on your window sill with the window slightly open - when the weather is going to be fine, the cone will open up, but if it is going to rain, the cone will close up again to protect its seeds - it's like Mother Nature's barometer! Amazing!

Another view of canal life rubbish floating wheelie bin and shopping trolleys, l was amazed to see how run down this canal was l thought that the trolleys in the water was a thing of the past. Being from California, I'm very fond of giant redwoods. The closest I've ever been to spiritual was walking through a grove of them while hiking in Big Sur. Have a fab weekend!

I started an engineering apprenticeship at Mather & Platt in 1968, sad to see it all gone now, that whole area is changed almost beyond recognition. In the early 70's the canal was mostly filled in and very shallow. It's great to see it navigable again and fantastic that folks like yourself are keeping the waterways alive 🙂.

That was the most interesting canal boat journey anyone has shown I think! Congratulations on your prowess on the locks and reading the Cut! As a kid back in the 50s and 60s I learned to swim with me mates in the local canal and learned to dive in the lock (can’t tell you which one I’m afraid) it’s South of Stourbridge near Wolverhampton. It was like a paradise for us kids all that greenery and a bluebell wood as well, magic times but I never got to go on the boats. I did see I remember a couple of boats pulled by pony, at the time I didn’t know how privileged I was to see the original usage of the British Canal Narrow Boat! Thanks Aah Kid!

well done all of you, what a challenge that was! when you hit the shallow waters i was feeling a bit scared for you. then pulling the drifting boat back across the canal, its good you know what to do. its about living and getting out there and i see why you keep doing it, even though its not an easy life, thank you for your drawings and kindness and noticing the little things to stop us make and see. this has helped me today, as i was feeling unwell before, many thanks and bless you all.

I know that canal well,it passes through an old friends farmland in Chadderton.It's crying shame that the city part of the canal has been left dererict.The river Irk also passes through his land.You are a brave girl taking on that trip.
As we know “Rochdale” has been in the news over the years for industrial scale child abuse cases involving a certain Community, your experience of rubbish in the canal reminds me of Ben and Emily’s trip on the Leicester canal in which they experienced similar problems including a mattress that had been thrown in, blocks of flats very close to the canal made it pretty obvious to me “some were disposing of rubbish straight into the canal”, if I remember correctly Emily said the water was “actually black” and had a horrid smell, needless to say they moved on pretty sharpish. If the Rochdale isn’t used very much by boaters Vanessa maybe they know of the rubbish etc in certain areas 🤷🏻♂️
I have been on worse canals for rubbish but I think the shallow pounds make this one more difficult. The water is actually really clear. If boats don’t use it though, there won’t be a need to maintain it which would be so sad. Thank you so much for watching. Take care 🦋🌻

I think this is your most adventurous travel so far, as i have seen. You really helped out with that boat across the canal, and i admire your spirit of going for it, while noting all the hazards or unexpected things, and the help! that you are receiving. Dear Vanessa and Zephyr What a glorious display of fall colours you got to experience. Sadly for us most of our colours have faded. It was interesting to see the different array of lock mechanisms which you encountered. I do have two questions for you this week. Being a solo boater "how do you prevent Alice Grace from getting hung up on the lock sills while going down in a lock?". The second is "do you have a favorite biscuit / cookie?" Hi Mark, I am only a solo boater for part of the week as my husband works away and he can’t be in the vlogs due to his work commitments and the sensitive nature of his job so mostly I am doing the locks with him but when I am on my own, I move the boat forward from the sill outside the lock and let the water out slowly. I currently live in Brisbane Australia and have done for many years now. Seeing the English Countryside from your perspective has blown my mind, it is so beautiful, and I used to take it for granted. Ah, the joys of the Rochdale Canal. Cruised in the opposite direction to you in September. Water constantly short, locks very heavy. We moored overnight just above lock 65. We got stuck in the pound just above the Failsworth Tesco, so my wife and I went into the store and had breakfast, leaving our friends (who own the narrowboat - Mrs Tittlemouse) stranded in the cut until the excellent Billy from CRT came and helped get the boat on the move again! We grounded in several pounds on the way down. Moored overnight in the lovely New Islington Marina before heading up the Ashton Canal (also short of water). I hope never to cruise the Rochdale again! Mind you, parts of the canal looked very beautiful in your video, for which many thanks.

I started an engineering apprenticeship at Mather & Platt in 1968, sad to see it all gone now, that whole area is changed almost beyond recognition. In the early 70's the canal was mostly filled in and very shallow. It's great to see it navigable again and fantastic that folks like yourself are keeping the waterways alive 🙂.

Great episode … again! The painterly vistas of colored arches of fall foliage and industrial heritage were a beautiful juxtaposition. The adventurous and arduous efforts of the day ended with another wonderful poem and a portrait of Zephyr before a grove of my California redwoods! Have a good week!

That was the most interesting canal boat journey anyone has shown I think! Congratulations on your prowess on the locks and reading the Cut! As a kid back in the 50s and 60s I learned to swim with me mates in the local canal and learned to dive in the lock (can’t tell you which one I’m afraid) it’s South of Stourbridge near Wolverhampton. It was like a paradise for us kids all that greenery and a bluebell wood as well, magic times but I never got to go on the boats. I did see I remember a couple of boats pulled by pony, at the time I didn’t know how privileged I was to see the original usage of the British Canal Narrow Boat!

well done all of you, what a challenge that was! when you hit the shallow waters i was feeling a bit scared for you. then pulling the drifting boat back across the canal, its good you know what to do. its about living and getting out there and i see why you keep doing it, even though its not an easy life, thank you for your drawings and kindness and noticing the little things to stop us make and see. this has helped me today, as i was feeling unwell before, many thanks and bless you all.

I know that canal well,it passes through an old friends farmland in Chadderton.It's crying shame that the city part of the canal has been left dererict.The river Irk also passes through his land.You are a brave girl taking on that trip.

As we know “Rochdale” has been in the news over the years for industrial scale child abuse cases involving a certain Community, your experience of rubbish in the canal reminds me of Ben and Emily’s trip on the Leicester canal in which they experienced similar problems including a mattress that had been thrown in, blocks of flats very close to the canal made it pretty obvious to me “some were disposing of rubbish straight into the canal”, if I remember correctly Emily said the water was “actually black” and had a horrid smell, needless to say they moved on pretty sharpish. If the Rochdale isn’t used very much by boaters Vanessa maybe they know of the rubbish etc in certain areas 🤷🏻♂️
I have been on worse canals for rubbish but I think the shallow pounds make this one more difficult. The water is actually really clear. If boats don’t use it though, there won’t be a need to maintain it which would be so sad. Thank you so much for watching. Take care 🦋🌻

I think this is your most adventurous travel so far, as i have seen. You really helped out with that boat across the canal, and i admire your spirit of going for it, while noting all the hazards or unexpected things, and the help! that you are receiving. Ouch that scraping underneath your boat where the canal was so shallow sounded absolutely horrendous , it's amazing the canal can be that shallow after all the rain we've had

What a glorious display of fall colours you got to experience. Sadly for us most of our colours have faded.
It was interesting to see the different array of lock mechanisms which you encountered.
I do have two questions for you this week. Being a solo boater "how do you prevent Alice Grace from getting hung up on the lock sills while going down in a lock?". The second is "do you have a favorite biscuit / cookie?"

Hi Mark, I am only a solo boater for part of the week as my husband works away and he can’t be in the vlogs due to his work commitments and the sensitive nature of his job so mostly I am doing the locks with him but when I am on my own, I move the boat forward from the sill outside the lock and let the water out slowly. Hello Vanessa, I have just found your vlogs and have binge watched most of them. I am from Barrowford where the Leeds and Liverpool canal runs through. I currently live in Brisbane Australia and have done for many years now. Seeing the English Countryside from your perspective has blown my mind, it is so beautiful, and I used to take it for granted. Thank you so much for your patience, passion and wonderful sketches at the end of each episode. I had a wonderful art teacher from Barrowford School of whom I am still friends with (Village life) and you have inspired me to take up sketching again.

Ah, the joys of the Rochdale Canal. Cruised in the opposite direction to you in September. Water constantly short, locks very heavy. We moored overnight just above lock 65. We got stuck in the pound just above the Failsworth Tesco, so my wife and I went into the store and had breakfast, leaving our friends (who own the narrowboat - Mrs Tittlemouse) stranded in the cut until the excellent Billy from CRT came and helped get the boat on the move again! We grounded in several pounds on the way down. Moored overnight in the lovely New Islington Marina before heading up the Ashton Canal (also short of water). I hope never to cruise the Rochdale again! Mind you, parts of the canal looked very beautiful in your video, for which many thanks.
