    i would like to add to this theory and say: I belive this is described how k-pop idols forget who they are and start viewing themselves as the people their fans view them as (as hanni said) for example: most people say Haerin looks like a cat, so she starts believing it, people like to think that Minji takes care of the members so she feels the need to do so and fix all their problems without thinking about hers, hyein has been on TV ever since she was very young and she started living like that, and hanni is about how all k-pop idols basically say whatever they're told and have to obey to commands sort off. The doctor I believe is us fans because he views them as anything and everything like how we view k-pop idols and how they're portrayed to be (theres always 1 person representing the fans, like in ditto) and Danielle represents the conscience of both the fans and the idols because she yells "we're NewJeans!" Not just reminding the members that, but also the fans that they're NewJeans, just NewJeans. And in the line "I was hoping that he will come through" it shows how they we're hoping they're real selves will come through, I and most others know that your conscience is the only aware part in you so Danielle was the one actually trying to save everyone not Minji but you probably already knew that. It shows how they've always had expectations from everyone like parents they disappointed, from their companies and from us and to be likeable they try to be Siri and fullfill impossible expectations. Pretty fucked up but I'm glad NewJeans and the creative team are doing this and showing the reality
    Edit: and how Danielle is around cameras and stuff, it also shows that idols and fans are equally fcked up because we're both the patients. I believe the guy at end the represents the people who control this industry like ceos and stuff because he made all Haerins drawings come true meaning the people at the top can basically do anything and everything they want

    It's so confusing how the lyrics of all their songs seem to be about romance but the MVs tell a different interpretation

    • @PurpleHaze4me
      @PurpleHaze4me Год назад +136

      I guess there is no standard rule that the mvs must match the lyrics of the song. It's probably part of the company's marketing strategy which is to produce a very catch song that will hook viewers and fans then make a music video that will challenge their minds to make them watch and listen even more out of cuiriosity. Although these girls are multi-talented and can attract a big audience without oversensationalizing,
      adding a little bit of spice wouldn't hurt. It doesn't matter if the song and mv don't relate as long as people talk about it. Like what the uploader said "it doesn't matter".

    • @vvonderweiss
      @vvonderweiss Год назад +37

      Many pop music videos like that, like BTS's "I need you". The director of the MV and composers of the songs don't usually work together before the song is published. The songwriters create the music for listeners only, while directors have to make MVs that suit the theme and are visually memorable. Directors still have their own interests in creating their own portfolio, so MVs often are a cinematic team's interpretation of a song's vibe- not the lyrics' explicit intention. For boybands/girlbands, there are generally many group members, so a direct iteration of a romance song would portray a story where all the members are 'dating' the same person in the MV - which would be weird! Many new groups are very young, and to avoid backlash from shippers or being overshadowed by more experienced actors for the MV, it might be a better marketing strategy to focus on just the members and choreography as tik tok choreography tends to go viral. It may be better to write a romance song just for the album so fans will self-insert to relate to the music, but the MVs often have sponsorships and brand deals where certain products have to be featured or incorporated into the MV. With that also in mind, the MV is to capture the vibe or aura of a song while making it memorable enough to promote the artists, directors, and choreographers. If the video keeps people talking I guess it's a success. Personally, I like learning more about a song/MV when things are implied.

    other than that i really like your theory, and honestly i had fragments of it that i couldn't put together to make it make sense so thanks a lot for that.

    That’s a really interesting theory. Mine is slightly different though. Hanni is basically what she said in the beginning, only existing for us. Minji is the oldest in the group, and it seems like she is trying to take care of all the members without realizing that she is lost herself. Hyein, is living in a fairytale, and is living her fairytale when she became an idol. It was her dream, almost too “perfect” just like a fairytale. But when we see that she starts to fade away, it’s because she feels like after she stops being an idol she will just fade away. Her fairytale will just become a story in a book that isn’t real anymore. My theory for Haerin may be a bit of a stretch, but hear me out. Black cats are known to be “unlucky” while white cats are known to be “good luck”. Haerin can be seen as a grey cat, the in between of black and white. Haerin is trying to say that being an idol is not the lucky dream come true everyone thinks it is, but can be seen as unlucky. When the members look at Haerin as a cat, it’s like when we look at our idols. Cats look cute on the outside, representing how easily idols capture out hearts because of the image they make themselves as, but people can’t really see what’s happening even if they try to tell us because we won’t understand. Danielle represents the sane person realizing the idol life they signed up too.

    • @seanli1242
      @seanli1242 Год назад +70

      First thing I want to say, the grey cat symbolism you picked up on is genius. The only connection I made was how fans associate Haerin to cats as she had feline features, so she becomes insane thinking herself as a literal cat. But the symbolism behind the cat being grey specifically is genius. I also mostly agree with your ideas. One thing I’d add for Hyein, is that she didn’t get the fairytale ending that she’s supposed to get in the video. I believe the bear kills the prince, and as such leading to no happy ending. I though that was a symbolic way of showing “being an idol is not a dream come true”.

    I got teary eyes whenever someone explains about the meaning behind this MV. This is the sole reason why I'm not enable myself to become obsessed with k-pop idols.
    Because, you see, they're humans! Not robots or technologies that only shows what they were taught to be. I always wanna smack the people who threw critisism to idols, celebrities and many more without even thinking that they also has feelings, their own real life.
    Becoming an idol is only a career, maybe a wholesome life for some of them, but afterall, they still human. There's a lot of cases where idols became depressed, because all of this fucked up expectations. Worse when te so-called-fans started to bullying them, keep on coming to them, when they tried their best to share happiness but made a mistake.
    People being so insensitive, and expected the idols to follow all of the rules created to them. Grow up, guys. You always stressed out when people always expected you to be someone else that you're not, so, why would you do the same to your idol? Just wish them happiness.

I've seen so many people talk about how they've had pressure from their parents, friends, classmates, etc. to be something that they aren't or don't want to be and how kpop idols have "saved" them from that. That's great for them but now they've put an expectation on the idol(s) to keep saving them or to always make them happy. My fav expectation would probably be when fans assume the emotions of kpop idols. If the idol has a faceless expression the fan will think "oh he looks kinda sad" "maybe just tired" etc etc. However if the idol is happy, excited, any optimistic expressions then fans will assume they are joyful cheery when in reality they have mental health issues, real life problems, mentally unstable, pressure and so many more but fans choose to ignore it because they don't want to realise the reality of idols and they are ACTUALLY going through. When they do, they will obviously be sympathetic but the cycle is reapting and never stops.

      this!! i'm happy for him too because he's such an amazing artist who can show the outlet in such a moving way. especially in change pt. 2, i love how the song feels like his debut, rough style and more new, softer style all at once. i'm really appreciative of newjeans for having this outlet too, idols should be able to talk of their own struggles just as freely.

    The last scene of the omg music video in which a hater was on twitter typing something. You could see her hands look so fragile and pale indicating she is also insane. I'm realised that new jeans were not only informing the fans but also the antis. They waste time hating on idols forgetting that they have a life and hating on idols won't benefit them at all.

    one thing that i think really adds to your theory--as "siri hanni" is writing messages for the phone owner, she writes the name of the girl in the ditto music video, heesoo. this is definitely a pretty good theory, and i think there's a lot of correlation between your theory and the intention of the music video. it would be super interesting if you could discuss your thoughts on why so many kpop fans struggle mentally.
    i personally think companies bank on mental illness and depression, selling idols as people to adore, crush on, look up to. it's their entire business model, and really encouraging the development of those parasocial attachments and relationships is key to maintaining dependency in fans on idols, which helps with revenue--at least, that's the conclusion i've come to. it's nice to see these topics and feelings be discussed. i must admit that in your analysis of ditto, i felt a bit--not offended?--maybe attacked, but in a non-abrasive way--i think because though i understand that fans need to personally understand that the connections they feel aren't real--i do agree and have always agreed with that point--we need to direct the bulk of that attention and constructive criticism towards the business model of kpop. kpop is made for obsession, and to people who are desperately in need of connection, humor, positivity, etc. like i personally have also been so many times in the past and even now to an extent, that is an obsession too easily created. the vulnerability both of idols and of fans is being exploited by kpop companies. i hope that topics like this in NewJeans' concept and MVs (and also Yunjin's i doll) will create social discourse that will lead to positive change both in fan culture and on the part of companies.

    I love your interpretations. i agree with them so much. At first i thought Omg was just a happy song abt love, like loving or having a crush on someone, being mesmerized by them and wanting to be with them. The dance, the outfits and the melody itself also gave good refreshing vibes. And it actually still makes sense after understanding the message because that's the controversy. that's how we view everything. Everything is so happy and comforting when in reality it's messed up. Now the covers also make sense to me. Their debut album had the original regular cover, a cute bunny on a blue background. The lyrics of the songs released then were also pretty regular. Liking a certain person, the feeling of being hurt (for fans to relate to..??) or wanting attention for being the main charachter and also a feeling to relate to. Typical songs in the industry. But this album/ those two songs show us the reality. That's how i interpretate it. As in ditto the cover suddenly changes to red, which seems confusing to be put on a such happy sounding song. The dark reality is slowly getting revealed by showing fans' pov. Then to being comletely revealed in Omg showing everyone's pov at once (mainly the idols, who actually spend their lifetime in this controversy). The background of the cover is therefor black the darkest, most warning shade.

    I love how a NewJeans song gives rise to so much discussion and intellectual stimulation, instead of pure hormonal stimulation. My general observation is most comments are too myopic, just focused on the message as it applies to Kpop Idols (I am Siri, I exist for you). Just stop and think, isn't that applicable to all of us? We often feel that we exist to fulfill other's expectations of us, our parents, our spouses, our children, our society. Some call that just being a responsible adult, others call it being a sell out. When our own personal aspirations differ dramatically from the expectations of our loved ones, well that is when we look like someone who has had a mental break down, who has failed, who is a disappointment to the ones that care the most about us, and so, we end up possibly more depressed than where we started. But, contrary to the narrator's conclusion (it doesn't matter), it absolutely matters, especially to your own happiness and the happiness of those that love and care for you. And it especially matters to those dependent on you, such as your young children (yeah, you have a responsibility as a parent to take care of them and not go off and do your own thing). What you do in that circumstance is completely up to you. But your happiness matters, and so does the feelings of those who love you and may be dependent on you. And the right answer (follow your heart or what is expected of you) is different for each of us, as it is for each Kpop Idol.

    i looooove how newjeans are the only kpop group that i found until now that shows the truth and make it in a way that everyone can understand it , i can't even imagine how hard it is to be a idol , first that you need to be good enough to pass the trainee thing and some of them don't even eat in a day just to be good enough .
    next we have all the work and pressure to be good enough to everyone so you don't get hated , be in the right weight , be pretty , be smart , be sweet and never do anything wrong , but that is impossible because an idol can not be a robot , an idol can not be a therapist , an idol can not be your wife or husband , an idol can't help you and be there forever to help you with your problems , they can not do all these things because they are human , i am also so grateful to newjeans for showing it for everyone , even i used kpop for escaping my problems and everyday i said " kpop saved my life " and i only realized that kpop don't save anyone's life because of newjeans , so lets be grateful for kpop for helping us but lets use it in the right way

    Also, idk if this has been mentioned but the first story in the story book is 'La Boum'. A french movie- famous for one specific scene, where the love interest ('coincidentally' portrayed as perfect until the end where he loses control and punches someone) puts headphones with music playing on the main character and she immediately starts dancing with im (as we see at 7:57) this represents how the music almost hypnotises us to blindly follow something. I believe they chose La Boum specifically because of that symbolism

    This video goes through what I dislike about many Kpop fans. The delusions.
    Kpop makes me happy, but it is not something that saves me from depression. It gives momentary happiness just like some other interest which can make life easier to deal with, sure. But you're dealing with your problems, and if your way of solving that is reliance on Kpop or anything else but yourself, you'll never get better. Use a tool to make it easier, but don't attribute the success to the tools. You did it, not your idols. The idols don't need the pressure of having to deal with your problems when they have just as many themselves.
