- Released by The Dave Clark Five in 1964, this week's “Remake of a Classic”, which appeared on their third album, “American Tour”, was a major departure from the band's usual power pop style it was typically known for. Written by Clark and lead vocalist Mike Smith, the song was released in the UK as the B-side to "Can't You See That She's Mine", but Clark insisted Epic Records release it in the U.S. as an A-side. It entered the charts in the U.S. in August 1964 at number 60, and six weeks later it had reached number three. It became the band's fifth single to sell over a million copies.
The Dave Clark Five was really a force to be reckoned with. The band appeared on the Ed Sullivan an astonishing 12 times, the first time being August 8, 1964...exactly one month after The Beatles. It was the band's first time in America, and when they arrived at Kennedy airport 30,000 people were there to greet them.
Clark was, and still is, a driving force in the music business. He produced or co-producing all of The Dave Clark Five's recordings, and he's never sold the rights to his music. A very close friend to Freddie Mercury, Clark was also the only person at Freddie's bedside when he passed away.
In 2006, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame snubbed The Dave Clark Five, inducting Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five - who had received six fewer votes - instead. The RRHOF's chairman, Jann Wenner, insisted that a Rap act be inducted. The band was finally inducted two years later. Sadly, Mike Smith passed away from pneumonia at the age of 64 just a few days before the ceremony.
This was a heck of a lot of fun. Although it's not really challenging musically, it doesn't have to be...a great song is a great song.
After a long, hard day, and in the midst of turmoil and uncertainty around the globe, listening to your music provides moments of joy and sweet reminiscences of happier days. Thank you, Russ…
Wow, Chris, what an extremely nice thing to say...thank you so much!
That's so true, well said.
Wow, I can't say it any better than that. I've posted links on my facebook and told everyone that I know to listen to you Russ.
Fantastic!! Great Vocals and one man band instrument playing!! Very nice, !!!!
Haha... "not challenging"? Maybe for a talent like you. 😁The flow of that cover is every bit the Dave Clark Five. Nice tribute. Oh, those mid-sixties and that love affair with the electric piano. 🤩Thanks for that.

One of my favorites from the oldie file. Very well done Russ!!!

Beatles! Nicely done Russ.
No, It's The Dave Clark Five
I stand corrected! Thanks
Thank you, Cindy!
Russ you' re a really great and excellent musician. And what a beautiful pieces of Musik - DC5 songs bringe me always back to my childerhood and youth. Thks a lot for your works. Greetings vom Germany to you and let this beautiful music never died
Thank you so much, Bruno!
I thoroughly enjoyed that.I saw the Dave Clark Five in 1964,twice.I was almost 11.The Tottenham Royal ballroom. The keyboard sound was very much like Mike Smith's Vox Continental organ. Great memories, well done.
I really appreciate that, thanks! So cool that you actually saw DC5!
In 1983,I was doing a gig at the chanticlare banqueting suite which was underneath the original spurs pitch. The show was Brotherhood of Man.When I got there,a 5 piece band was on stage and the bass player was Rick Huxley. I just had to go and speak to him.I said I saw you in the Dave Clark Five.It made my night to meet him.
I also noticed you were a fan of the fortunes.I was on the same show with them many times between 1978 -1982 backing the other artists who were also part of the show .
Thinking about it,I'm pretty sure the dc5 were on a revolving stage and do believe the first band that was on was The migil five and they would have on the other side going off to the back of the stage.I worked on a revolving stage once. You have to make sure that your extension cable is long enough to cope with this,or you could be in all sorts of trouble.
O CARA É FERA, TANTO NOS INSTRUMENTOS, QUANTO NOS VOCAIS.
Always good to hear your music Russ . Thanks once again for the memories !
Happy to hear it brought back some memories...thanks so much!
Just perfect Russ!
Wow, thanks much, Neil!
I’m an older person and have only had an apple tablet for two years. I find I’m kicking myself in my ass because… When the Beatles came to America I like many fell in love with the music and with them… And I never cared for any of the other bands that were out there. Heaven forbid I should like the Dave Clark Five… They were not the Beatles. Good Lord I could never like Eric Burton and the animals because… You guessed it they weren’t the Beatles. Now at the age of 71 I’m tapping into all the music I never gave a chance to in the 60s in the 70s. Russ you are extremely talented and I can tell it takes many hours to do even just one video. In the multi screen is just beautiful. I’ll be back to watch many more of your videos in the coming days weeks and months.☺️😉😎👍 👏👏👏💗💗💗
I almost forgot… You’re very handsome Russ!!! 😉
Thank you so much, Charlene....I really appreciate all the kind words!
One of my favorite songs of that era. Simple and sweet. Great job, Russ
Thanks so much, Gary; I appreciate it!
One of my all-time favorite songs! Nicely done, Russ! I’ve always admired anyone who can learn all these instruments and sing also! 2:35
Thanks so much, Arty!
Well, on the youtube version of The Voice I hit the buzzer and turned around about 10 seconds in to it.Then I rang the bell and hit subscribe. What a gift to yourself and us to be able to be a one man band that covers the songs as good as the original!
LOL...thanks Uncle Davey! I appreciate it!
Great little number which I haven’t heard before!! Well done mate!! I really enjoyed it. Keep up the brilliant work.😃😃😃😃😃😃
Thanks, will do!
Great cover of a great song.
Many thanks!
Takes me back to my high school years and the British Invasion. Well done, as always.
Thank you, dear!
Such talent. No wonder I don't have any!
Hi Russ,
I have always loved this DC5 Classic. As you mentioned, it was a departure from their usual style, but it is without doubt a wonderful song, and one of their best. Your fantastic cover version certainly does it justice, and listening this morning brings back great memories of growing up in the UK in the 1960s. You did a terrific job on lead vocals, harmonies and all instruments, and I can't imagine that anyone could produce a better cover of this lovely old song! Thanks for sharing!
Best Wishes, James
Wow, thank you so much....I really appreciate it!
Great choice Russ,thanks
You bet...thanks so much for listening in!
love and respect from a young classic rock fan from turkey!
i just started making one man band cover videos too and i aspire to be like you
Thanks so much! Good luck with your videos!
Excelente Maestro😂 interpretación Genial !!! Russ , gran Regalo del Pasado . Sierta " soledad " qué Sentimos cuando Fuimos Jóvenes. Muchos cambios Emocionales Tuvimos .. La Guerra de Viet Nam ...... por eso Nacieron los Heepies , el Rock and Roll , Pece and ❤ Love , The Beatles etc Excelentes Recuerdos ... hoy los Jóvenes No Tienen Ídolos Musicales como los qué Tuvimos Nosotros .
Thanks so much for listening in!
Perfect! That's all I need to say. Thank you Russ.👍
Nice of you to say, Daryl...thanks!
Wow, that was really good! Thank you! Enjoying this from southern Maine.
You're absolutely right, it's a great song! Well done, Russ.
Thanks Rolf. Coming from someone so accomplished as you are it means a lot!
Sounds great. songs like that just don't happen anymore.
Thanks a ton; I appreciate it!
great stuff...I really like your Here Comes that Rainy Day Feeling Again too!
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks so much!
another great version of a great song---good choice Russ, and a fab job
Russ!! As always..... you nailed it man!! Great job!! 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks a ton, Phil: I appreciate it!
Terrific job as always.
As one who can recall the mid-60s, the DC5 were talked about just as much as the Beatles for a year during the British Invasion before the Beatles pulled away and the Stones found their stride. Ed Sullivan was blessed with interesting new artists every week as the genre just took off.
Did I not see that Jazzmaster knockoff before? A hardtail bridge and warm, low-output Filtertrons? I just got another $199 Firefly LP with Frampton-like 3 pickups. Came almost perfect and clean. It's teaching me not to attack the strings as much with that middle pickup in the way. 🙂
Thanks so much, Stan. Doing research for these videos prompts me to check out a group's lesser-known tunes....I'm finding I really dig a lot of DC5's more obscure stuff. A ton of energy!
As for the guitar, it's a Guitar Fetish body and neck (they finally have the off set bodies back in stock). The pickups are a set of Fender Fidelitrons (as opposed to the controversial Infidelitrons) I picked up at a guitar show for $50. They were originally used in Fender's Cabronita series.
I'm contemplating getting one of the Firefly es335-types. I hear you about the middle pickup getting in the way. My '79 Ibanez has a Dimarzio someone stuck in the middle...sounds great, but it's a pain.
@@russwilloughby501 Ahh ... I just learned something new. The Fender custom guys not only loved the Tele, but Gretsch's as well., so they created the Cabronita with Filtertron ripoffs. 🙂
Your musical talent and outstanding vocals are truly amazing! Thank you for sharing it. Would you consider some southern rock? Namely Hold on Loosely by .38 Special. I think you would nail it.
Thanks so much! As for HOL, I played it in a band for nine years, so I've had my fill. I appreciate the suggestion though!
Lovely little number! Never heard it before and my knowledge of music is good !! So very well done !! Keep up the fantastic work.😃😃😃😃😃😃
Many thanks! Glad you liked it!
That was fantastic!
I appreciate it...thanks!
Extraordinario!!, es una de mis canciones favoritas. Muchas gracias.
Did You Know?
Despite their tremendous overall commercial success, The DC5 had only one #1 Chart Hit in the UK and one #1 Chart Hit in the USA.
“Glad All Over” (1964) #1 UK
“Over and Over” (1966) #1 USA
I like your cover version of “Because” especially bringing the guitar to the forefront of the mix and your subtle harmonies. Would like to have heard more of the bass lines.
Wish The DC5 would have released more of their album tracks as single releases to showcase more range.
Unlike The Beatles, The DC5 just didn't evolve.
One single sounded like the next. “Because” was one of the rare exceptions. Hard to believe they stayed Together till 1970.
Thanks so much for listening...appreciate the feedback!
Very good.
Many thanks!
Another amazing job Russ!!! That organ sounds amazing!! You got all the nuances of each part perfect!! When i first saw the title i thought you tackled the Beatles. But this is a great tune as well! Thanks again Russ!! Always great to see when you post another wonderful cover!!
Hi Chris...hope you are well. As always, I appreciate it!
@@russwilloughby501 hey russ how about undun by the guess who.. just heard it on pandora and thought it right in ur wheelhouse!
@@mayplace1961 Hi Chris...that is a great tune! Good suggestion!
Russ, I Love the DC5 and as you always do, you did another excellent job with both the song and your " historical liner notes"! Thanks for continuing to do this, we look forward to them!
As always, many thanks for the nice comments...I really appreciate it!
It seems like yesterday I was watching Thruster and CJSS play at Bogarts. Then, 30+ years later I stumble upon your RUclips channel. It's funny how things come full circle. Your covers are fantastic! Keep 'em coming!
Seems like yesterday to me, too! Thanks so much...really glad you stumbled on to my channel!
Excellent job, you’re one hell of a talent. I look forward to the next one. God bless!
Wow, thanks so much; I appreciate it a ton!
Awesome performance and great choice because this song is every bit as good as a Beatles song.
I agree! Thanks so much!
A great song from a great group….performed by a modern day great artist. Always enjoy to hear and see you perform. Thanks!
Thanks Tony; I really appreciate it!
I did my ritual of reading the description of the song while listening and then went through the song again watching you play ☺️ I could tell you we're having a really good time doing this one! Thanks for another great song and performance
Absolutely agree about reading the background of each song. The info Russ posts is always so interesting!
I look forward to the descriptions as well.

And he can remake British Invasion Hits too! I'll be damned!
LOL....thanks, Rick!
Woo Hoo! I’m a big fan of the Rusty Willoughby Eight but I hear at all their concerts most of the guys in the band are “in the bathroom,” all the time. Something’s fishy. They sound great though. 😃
Usually only one of them shows up....a bunch of slackers.
Joia !
Thanks!
Very good dude,, seems like you were able to separate (isolate) each harmony. Mind if I ask how you did that?
I just listened to the original then recorded a separate track for each harmony.
WOW ... WILL YOU DO SOME HOLLIES [ THE AIR THAT I BREATHE ] AND [ NEEDLES AND PINS ] BY THE SEARCHERS
I already did, "Air That I Breathe"...I've thought about doing "Needles and Pins", though.....thanks!
Lol I was thinking of the beatles song
Thanks for listening!
You missed an augmented chord in there and the last chord was missing a note. Aside from that it was lovely.👍👍
Sorry for the delay in responding...I was getting my wrists bandaged up. LOL. Thanks, Gary...I appreciate it!
@@russwilloughby501 🤣🤣😂😂Great work on all your tunes. We are roughly the same age and the high school rock bands I was in did a lot of these at dances. Good memories.

2 harmonies or a double track?
Two harmonies....
You must have a great back story.
I was raised in the forest by wolves...then civilization encroached and I was forced to learn music.
