- The planet is being overwhelmed with clothes. Close to 56 million tonnes of clothes are sold every year. In Europe, the amount purchased has almost doubled since the year 2000. Thanks to fast disposable fashion, you can constantly renew your wardrobe. But producing clothes at such a low price has a very high environmental cost. Textiles are the second most polluting industry in the world, after oil.
Creating a dress for ten euros in Europe, in less than a fortnight. It’s not only possible, but it’s becoming the norm. Since the fashion industry went down the path of fast fashion, it’s always both faster and cheaper - no matter the consequences.
Let’s start with those suffering the most: the workers. They work between 12 and 15 hours a day for salaries less than half the legal minimum wage. And in abominable working conditions. Chemical products in textile factories often poison the workers and local residents.
According to the brands, they no longer have time to create. In order to satisfy an insatiable consumer appetite, copying the competition’s models makes things go faster and cheaper - even if it means risking a court case now and then.

I HATE that my family is forced to buy cheaply made clothes because of prices and our lack of money. We try to wash clothes carefully so as to keep them longer. I used to work in S. San Francisco in the garment district. It was horrifying when our country shifted to outsourcing the industry. So many were laid off. Worse, the quality of clothing plummeted. Our penchant for cheap throwaway goods is one of our country's most self-harming characteristics. Edit: keyboard warriors: I'm speaking of economics, jobs, world pollution and quality of life NOT racism. Your children are being harmed by wearing so many cheap synthetic clothes.

Fast Fashion is dumped in Africa or Asia per pound when NOT sold off the rack. Cheap fashion ask questions about how the product created. My clothes are a decade old.
Me too 😅. To this day, I use my old clothing and shoes, plus underwear for yard work. If you stay away from Fast Fashion your clothing will last forever.
This is why I only buy what I need and when I need
I wear my clothes untill they are broken or very worn out, sometimes takes 10 years.

I’m so happy I’m not into fashion. Shopping in second hand stores or even making your own is best. I know people making their own clothing is not going to happen, but it’s a nice thought. I wonder what Zara is hiding behind?

I make my own clothes, admittedly not all the time but I have done it for many years. I also shop in charity shops, thrift stores in your country. I alter things to fit etc. I do realise not everyone is good with a sewing machine but how sad things have become now.
What are they hiding behind? The question is more of what is the driving force behind fast fashion ? The self described social media influencers…. I.e. noholita in the video. Who are really the new dopamine heroin addicts waiting for the next internet fashion fix.. I can’t wait…I need it NOW.
People still thinking they do not have enough clothes, i would say live out of two suitcases and bags like you are travelling. I did this and i was like why i have this many clothes? 😅. Now keeping the decade old clothes that i have, if i buy, i focus on if i need it or things like wardrobe essentials or a minimalist approach like capsule wardrobe.
My mother-in law passed away 29 years ago, I still wear the clothes she left behind. I don't throw out my clothes until they were worn out. I haven't bought any clothes in the past 20 years, until this year I bought a pair of shorts.

I dislike shopping for clothes because most do not fit me would rather have a tailor.
That and the ethical issues are why I've started to see my own clothing.
Promote locally made fashion, good for local economy, less landfills and supporting local designers is our future for survival
It's horrible. I don't understand this love to ZARA. They actually don't make something special. But it is not only ZARA but another brands either. People are bekommig addicted to fashion and it is sad!

the flip side of the argument is how people look after their clothes. My Primark haul from 15 years ago is still going strong, the only items I've donated/updated are ones that no longer fit me. Look after your clothes.

In the past i have renewed my wardrobe 4 times exclusively by picking up what others throw away. And i dont mean rags. I live in Moscow and people constantly put the unwanted clothes by the dumpster. They put it in a bag and place ot by the dumpster, sometimes the exit of the buildinng. Shoes, bags as well. Sometimes cosmetics, new ones or hardly used. And thats not even including the atuff i dont pick up like if i see that something is not my size. Or that something is not really my style. Like imagine....its at a point where people that dress at dumpsters pick and choose.
In Austin, Texas- we just put out useable items with a free sign. Twice a year, we have the big item pick up- that is fun! People are allowed to put out anything they want except tree branches. We also have large brush pick ups - anything wood twice a year also. Man, I would so be going through those bags ! What fun. Also, what a great way recycle!

With how fast fashion seasons come and go every year, not to mention resort collections and whatnot, luxury fashion houses are also as bad, if not worse than fast fashion. Because they are the pinnacle of it. With celebrities and influencers wearing them online, fans will try to emulate the look with whatever they can afford
I only buy as much as I need, and give them away in good condition after using for at least a year or two.
Except for undergarments, T-shirts and socks, l try shop Resale fashion stores. Prices are just competitive and clothing styles are current. Plus I am supporting local businesses.
I love how they refer to someone who has no interest in dealing with journalists as "allergic to the media". If I was some influential person I wouldn't give them the time of day either if I could avoid it.
I remember around the 2012..2015 is when hm quality drastically described. I was annoyed, stopped using them. As a busy American it’s annoying to have smith that rips, stretches , deforms. It also is annoying to me having to go to the store for shopping. Simple as that, with age cloth shopping can become a headache. So not just brands are thinking about, consumers themselves are ready to welcome diff trends. If it were to me I’d live on a farm with my old car and notebook and quiet the society for the most part.

It is really complicated; developing countries depend on fashion (and I just do not know what to say) -- particularly assembling and manufacturing things like buttons, fabrics etc. but Hollywood celebrities wearing new clothings with long, layered, long clothing long train, long hem is so out of line, they need to stop! It is ugly.

When I retired from teaching, special education, I then subbed for 6 years. I am cleaning my closet now- none of my clothing is Goodwill worthy- all faded and deeply worn- not fast fashion. Most of the clothing is cotton- now all if my clothing is working outside clothing and cut up cotton rags for cleaning. People think that non fast fashion clothing is expensive. The clothing is not expensive- it is well made and will last. People do not want to invest for the long haul.

I personally don't like fast fashion being I know I am not to crazy for fashion but still like some nice clothes if I need to dress up for something but with me I will keep my clothes for a long time being I know some of my clothes are about ten years old more or less as long my clothes looks somewhat decent and it's wearable it's like you can almost keep these clothes almost forever intell they eventually warned out or badly stained to a point that bleach won't be able to do anything for the clothes

Fast fashion, badly made, poor quality clothing robbed thousands of highly skilled seamstresses in England of their jobs, 100's of factories had to close down.
