    hi folks today we are going to build a control panel. ora custom keyboard that can speed up the work flow of my video editing.
    usuali it take me 3 or 4 days to complete one of my tutorials,
    the goal of todays project is to recycle all components.
    we are going to use parts from a tape recorder. it was an old VHS tape recorder.
    insede i found a big brushless motor that can work ad a dinamo. electic generator.
    but today i will convert it into a practical hand nob.
    so that i can have different actions on the software.
    zooming in or out.. adjust the volume.. move che time line..
    this project can be adapted to any software!
    just remember to assign the right keys the che software.
    im vert proud of this solution.
    i haven't use any programming. or used any arduino. resberrypy

      @@petergplus6667 When you sub a YT channel, it defaults to the "personalized - empty bell" icon.     The first part of video gave me a flashback.
    In my teens in the 1980s I made a joystick for my Spectrum computer, 4 switches, 5 = right, 6 = down, 7 = up, 8 = right. It worked very well. Fun to make and better game playing.
    The second part, a flashback to my first employment after school, a panel builder/wirer.

    I love the implementation of reused electronics. This thing is like the most hacked together rotary encoder I have ever seen, but it's operation provides the same function lol. Pretty cool man.

    Some time ago I made a joystick for a computer to play Mario using the same method with the keyboard board. This can be used to make keyboards and devices comfortable for people with disabilities. it is not so difficult to find the pins of the specific keys, you just don't have to remove the plastic pad under the keys and use a multimeter to measure the contacts under the key to which pin they go. I really like the design of your creation.

    What an amazing idea. This is the Italian version of Laura Kampf. Figuring out how to build things and then actually bring them into reality. I wouldn't have the patience for that, but it's quite amazing nonetheless!

    Hi Rulof, I really like your videos, I've been subscribed for several years. I just posted a video on my channel, very much inspired by this video. I wanted to show you that it is possible to use an old keyboard. It's just a process of tracing the lines of the 2 plastic sheets. It's pretty hard to do by hand with a marker, but if you scan them into a computer, you can basically just take the 'paint bucket' tool, click on the key/line you want to trace, and it highlights the whole line. Do this for each key you want to map, and in a few minutes, you have the pin combinations. The big advantage, other than the cost, of using the old keyboard circuit, over the keyboard pcb kit you used, is how small it is, allowing you to put it in pretty much any form factor you want.

    Non ti conoscevo, e devo dire che sei davvero grandissimo. Mi piace molto lo stile dei tuoi video e spieghi davvero molto bene, invidio anche la padronanza dell'Inglese, potessi farli anche io in Inglese.... Peccato per gli innumerevoli spot, non so se sei tu che puoi decidere le quantità ma in questo video sono state 6, una ogni 5 minuti, un pochino pressanti e si corre il rischio di irritare.
    Ora hai un nuovo follower :) Bravo davvero. P.S. secondo me recuperando da qualche vecchio apparecchio elettronico, avresti potuto trovare degli encoder, non quelli incrementali, ma ci sono proprio degli encoder che hanno 2 contatti, che si chiudono in base alla direzione e la loro chiusura è in sync con i dentelli. Comunque grande manualità e inventiva.

    This is great! I love the idea of physically getting in there and changing the data to form in the way you want it to, rather than hooking up an arduino and letting the microchip handle it all. It's rare to find videos of people actually getting in there and doing it manually, makes me want to try myself

    Give the algorithm a break, it suggested this video to me right now. So as I enjoyed it, the algorithm knows what I like! Subbed and liked!
    Just one question: did you keep the relay intermediate step in the final version? Technically there shouldn't be any needed, one could wire the switches directly.
    Also it's a slight cheat to buy a mech keyboard pcb, which essentially is a micro controller with qmk flashed already.
    But overall I enjoyed watching your very valid process and approach.

    You can make a quadrature decoder to determine the direction of rotation of the VCR motor with a D-Type Latch. Use one of the phases as 'Data', and the other phase as 'CLOCK'. And you can make a D-Type latch out of relays if you really want to. The direction signal can be 'used to enable the 'CLOCK' phase to trigger different keys based on direction of rotation. You can do all of this with relay logic.

    Пока смотрел пришло ещё два метода, как определять направление вращения. Без использования магнитов. И даже с большей чувствительностью. И все также налоговые решения. Второй способ даже с регулировкой чувствительности)
    А так в общем - как всегда очень оригинальный проект с интересным исполнением 👍
    Ps- и все не понимаю, почему так мало просмотров, YT вообще не рекомендует видео. Зашёл на канал, а там видео десять, которые я не видел. Если не больше. Печально

    I use to fix things and create things reclycling parts as well and I fixed my car's trunk electric lock using the cable of a tooth brush, 2 little screws and 20 minutes epoxi glue. It's working as brand-new for the past 6 years, haha

    You could have also used optical sensors for the sensor/switch for the rotary wheel instead of the momentary switch, that why there would be even less friction and a higher resolution in ur movement of the rotor knob!

    The secret is to input voltage in the graphite circuit and find the which header pins are high using a multi-meter while pressing keys. For the rotating knobs I would adapt an old mouse (those with a ball) so you can preserve some rotation accuracy.

    The textbook way to sense the direction of rotation is to use a quadrature encoder. You could still use your wooden wheels and cherry switches.
    What you did was clever as hell though.

    Brilliant! Love it but you should build in some safety features because you're running alternating current through that box. If something should touch something else you don't want to get electrocuted.

      Iam your god I think you missed something in the video. His original idea was to use the vcr read head as a source for the relay which would have output a small ac voltage. He changed this to the micro switch method using a dc supply and abandoning the read head connector altogether.

    By not using Arduino or similar device you've made it painfully complex and likely to prematurely wear out or break. BTW. there is a device that does exactly what you wanted and you probably have one on your desk - a mouse wheel. As an exercise in purely mechanical this project makes some kind of sense, but you should then showcase mechanism - not hide it.
    Also, you can easily solder onto old keyboard PCB. Scrape the conductive paint off, there's should be a normal trace underneath. Even if it's not, you can scrape off the green solder stop from the trace leading to in and solder a wire to it. Since it's looking like a standard 2.54m pitch you can also use an ISA slot from a motherboard or a floppy disk connector from and old-old PC, though they are getting a bit harder to find in trash. As for which contacts to close, that's easy. Just trace the lines from the button on the original keyboard membrane

      Mechanical switches will fail at a certain number of on-off cycles. This is true for both manual switches and relays. The number (for good swiches) can be high but not so high for this to never happen. For instance, good quality Omron switches in my Microsoft Explorer mouse lasted for some 20 years before I had to change one out, but unbranded crap in my robot vacuum failed (all 4 of them) in less then 5 years - say 100 cycles per session, 30 vacuuming session per year, that means they only lasted 1500 on-off cycles and that's generous. Bottom line, mechanical switches fail, that's one of the reasons mouse wheels use optical interrupt sensors. The other is you can get high actuation rates, so your wheel can detect very small movements and also very quick movements without loosing steps.

      @@RulofMaker on one hand this is true and I have experienced this first hand as I had to replace both of the momentary switches in my driveway gate opener. (only after 10 years of daily use and being outside in 40C weather)
      On the OTHER hand the momentary switches like the ones in your control knob board, are generally quite inexpensive and easy to replace! (I bought mine for like under $10 total.)

    I use a Contour (brand name) Shuttle / Jog controller that cost less than $100. I've had it for fifteen years I think. It has 15 buttons, an outer ring that snaps back to the center, and a central knob that spins freely.

    You could have done this with an Arduino Micro and a couple of rotary encoders, BUT I'm glad you didn't because I love this out-of-the-box thinking! Also the relays clicking is *immensely* satisfying :D

    But the first things I learned about Arduino is Encoders and I used mouse wheel 🎡 for it
    One Arduino can save your time and do it all.
    P.S. Add a wooden cap over the video head for a better look, or 3D print since you're familiar with designing.

    It would be good idea to add flyback diodes to the relay coils, it is a good practice. It eliminates any voltage spikes which are generated when the relay coil is deenergised.

      :) I like your solution btw, it was very creative. It probably would be much easier using microcontroller, but this has something to it. Also for some simpler tasks it will be very possible to use the original keyboard PCBs, I believe these black contacts are just carbon plated, when you scrape it off, it will be normal copper, which you can solder wires onto.

    Why no Arduino?
    I think the analog pins could read your knobs.
    Every thing you did even the Aluminum VCR parts could work with it.
    I however did like how you figure out your knobs.

    Hi Rulof, hows it going in Italy? hope things are good for you and family. Happy new year bro.
    Here in the Uk its crazy, many lock downs and censorship. Find thing need to get out in nature and be grounded. Too much in the mind. Project this year is building a boat, and so will be using some of your tips. Might even make a sail for a kayak :)

    For Motor Wheel use Mouse board.
    Take mouse with 2 additional wheels and use your own.
    Whithout controller there is no Simple way. 3-4 analog 74xx chips can do same job (like in 80's).
    So use mose controller, arduino, or lod analog Logic chips - 3 ways.
    Or use 1 knob for 1 button

      You can use not only Relays - optocouplers smaller make no sound, and no moving parts.

    Hi Rulof, I wonder how did you solve the problem of misclick when changing direction. I mean if you change the direction of the knob, it first triggers the click then the razor flips other direction, so the first click is in the wrong direction. Love your videos, keep 'em coming.

    this controller has turned out AMAZING!!!!!
    i'm wondering if you make the same style turning-knob but of instead of it clicking a button on the keyboard it could use the motor to generate a signal that is smooth like how mice used to have a ball inside it so the 'steps' in between each 'click' are very very small and it seems smooth.
    maybe you could use the guts of an older mouse with a ball and the VCR motor to do this, that would be pretty cool too!

    Man, instead of the Premier logo, you really should have installed a 🖲️ trackball or a touchpad. I'm sure you could've found an old arcade style trackball to use. Would have removed the need to reach over and navigate on the device. Hopefully you do a revisit or 2.0 variant of this. Either way, still a super dope video and concept!

    You're probably very aware of this, but the Amazon links are for the Italian Amazon website. Many of us can't read or order from the Italian site. Not sure if Amazon offers a service to somehow redirect a product to the respective viewers local country..... -or- ... if more links could be added in the Amazon country of common viewers... -or- ... what the best approach would be, but being able to click for the products in the viewers respective country might help increase affiliate commissions. In my case, I was interested in the Arcade Buttons, but the link takes me to the Italian Amazon site. I then manually try to find the same thing (or something similar) on my local Amazon website - which probably means a loss of commissions for you?!? Just a thought... no idea if there's a good solution.

    without using arduino, the easiest would be a mouse scroll wheel but you can only have one.
    some way you might be able to do would be to fix a pole with some friction to the wheel and have a magnet on the end activate a reed switch which would enable either key depending which switch it is against.
    you then use a single relay or the many reed switches around option.
    though while only mechanical/low electronics is fun, imo the easiest option is still the arduino, you can probably adapt a vcr button program in a day or two if you ask some help.
    and you get something that's fairly easy to change.

    I found only the forward-reverse and zoom in and out is useful for video editing.
