- Lumi is one of 114 dogs the Humane Society of the United States assisted the Hertford County Sheriff's Office in rescuing in May of 2023.
Green Dogs Unleashed (greendogsunlea...) was one of many placement partners we turned to for assistance giving these dogs a second chance at life. Erika Proctor leads GDU and found homes or fosters for 29 of the rescued pups. Erika also became Lumi's foster mom and personal trainer. Utilizing patience and expert training skills, Erika, her dogs, and her cat helped Lumi learn how to be a dog. She also realized that humans can actually be sources of kindness.
The assistance of the Humane Society of the United States was requested by the Hertford County Sheriff's Office after members of the community and individuals who reported buying sick puppies from the breeder raised concerns about the welfare of animals on the property.
Law enforcement, consumer protection agencies, and the HSUS receive hundreds of complaints annually from consumers who have bought sick puppies from breeders and pet stores, as detailed in a report released earlier this month by the Humane Society of the United States Stop Puppy Mills campaign. These situations underscore the importance of choosing a responsible source when bringing home a new puppy.

Thank you for helping with this rescue. I wish people would never buy a dog off the internet, they don’t seem to understand that the puppies are not from a good situation and most likely a puppy mill. We need stricter laws in the US about who can get a license to breed dogs.
