DETAIL :
The island of Armona and Culatra
They are part of the 5 islands that make up the "Ria Formosa" lagoon which is a nature reserve of 17,000 hectares.
These 2 islands are accessible from Olhão
("Culatra" is accessible via Faro as well)
Armona Island
This island is the closest to Olhão since it is less than 3 km opposite
It can be reached by boat in 30 minutes
It is 3 km long and 1 km wide.
You will be able to visit its unique village composed of small houses with their garden, there reigns an atmosphere of relaxation, rest, holidays.
At the very end of the village is a huge wooden pontoon leading to various beaches.
In the village there are a few bars and 2 grocery stores.
Be careful, check the boat schedules because there are not many
The return time to Olhão is actually the time to arrive from the ferry on the island
I advise you to buy your return ticket right away because on the island the ticket office was closed.
I did the visit in 2h30 stopping for a drink but not at the beach.
Culatra Island
This island is twice as long as Armona since it is 6 km long and 1 km wide
There are 1000 inhabitants who are spread over 3 villages: Cultura (of the same name as the island), Hangares and Farol
The boats dock at the villages of Cultura and Farol.
(Be careful when you take your tickets if you do not leave the same place as when you arrived, like me)
The smallest village is Hangares then it is Cultura and finally Farol which is more important.
There are small grocery stores, bars and restaurants in Cultura and Farol (not in Hangares)
I suggest you do like me: Arrive at the 1st landing in the village of Cultura then go to Hangares on foot
Be careful the path is not indicated, do not take the wooden pontoon because it leads to a beach, the path is in sand in the middle of the grass (try to have a GPS or ask someone)
The path takes a good half hour in all because you walk in the sand from the beginning to the end, which takes more time (try to have shoes rather than sandals)
You will notice that the village of Hangares is surrounded by barbed wire because during the First World War, this village was a military naval base.
Its name: "Hangares" comes precisely from its seaplane hangars
Then along the beach from this village to reach Farol
Once you arrive in Farol you will discover (at the bottom of the village) the superb 47-meter lighthouse built in 1851
As for the island of Armona, check the timetables carefully because there are few boats
I stayed in all for 2h45, I had time to do the 3 villages on foot and also have a drink on the terrace but I did not stop at the beach

:-)
