Well there's a blast from the past; we used get in these mine workings through a easy access entrance that mining machinery was driven in to the mine through. That was 40 years ago! We swam in the lakes and made rafts from polystyrene packaging, even spent a whole night there in 1976. I wouldn't let my kids do it now though. Closest I get to it these days is Sunday walks around the "fairy tale castle" not giving anything away. As a side note there is a lot of UFO sightings reported right above the mine area....jus sayin. Thanks for the trip down memory lane
Absolutely incredible Matthew and that music you use with the drone footage at the end was perfect .. thanks to you and the lads for going through the trouble of exploring this vast place.
That mud was so prolific its still in my cammo trousers 4 washes later and probably will never come out of my rucksack... I think its the Iron impregnation from the mine. Evil stuff. Glad you enjoyed it - had to hunt around for mine like music I was allowed to use. I think it worked well also.
Years ago, mid 60'sish, we used to go inside the mountain opposite on the Western side. Lots of old mines shown on the George Yates map of 1799. Also, the 'grottoes' are shown. There are loads of industrial archeological sites to find. As for the grottoes, I seem to remember the way into one.
You guys probably know this but up until a few years ago you could walk straight into the mine from the access tunnel. It's since had the doors sealed and some massive boulders holding them closed. Big respect, can't believe you came up and down on that rope!
I thought our guide was having a laugh when he suggested we go down on that rope. The reality got more and more serious when we were slipping and sliding around next to cliff edges down there.
Glad I came across your channel 😊, Im new to exploring so it's great seeing these type of videos and to pick up great tips to help me along the way. I just liked and subscribed x
That would have been an awesome place to go cave diving, with that clear water. At first I even thought that might have been the reason for some of those rigs beside the lakes.
When I was 15 and a scout attached to Albany Rd baptist church the leaders took us to the iron ore mine. My mother dropped me in pub car park from where we climbed up to a massive opening like a man made valley full of trees and plants. We abseiled down a very steep nr vertical drop. At the bottom was an entrance to the mine. The place had about 6 inches of water in parts. We then had to go down a 40 degree ledge which sliding down terrified me but a leader managed to get a rope in my hands, just as well as the edge became a 20 foot drop onto jagged rocks. There was a lake which I was told was bottomless, probably an exaggeration but l believed it at the time. I was told sometime after that the entrance had been blown up because it was too dangerous to enter. This exciting day would be around 62 years ago. Thanks so much for this. Probably a different part of the mine but the lake shown here triggered my recollections.
This is one place I've been itching to get a look at, great video, there's another video showing a much easier way in but seems that may be blocked up now. There a proper cave system over the other side of the mountain too that looks interesting.
Well, that certainly had me clutching my chair in terror just watching you lot and when I saw how deep the water was...that was the scariest moment of all!
Amazing video!!! Been looking for this exact place.. I need your help.. we can’t find the entrance hole you entered in by, we’ve got to that old rusty lift you showed at the beginning with the huge drop, with the huge hole at the bottom but doesn’t seem safe to go down! Where abouts is the entrance you entered by? Isit near the old lift?
I can’t believe I’ve must of used the road below it hundreds of times, I knew there was a quarry but not the old mine tunnels, wicked if you go over to the other mountain there is a few caves there not sure how far they go mind! You should go down to Dan Yr Ogof it’s riddled with cave systems around there!
@ 4:07 -> nearly shitted myself .. looks like there's a giant eye in the wall 😬😄 Great explore .. need to get an underwater drone so it's possible to explore deep down in those lakes.
nothing secret about that, i use t work in there for cemex. it doesnt play weird spooky music either! you will find the royal tunnels and Naplionic mine workings from around 1800 though
Did you get wet at all going in this way and is it your own rope or the one that's there already? I've read the cavern was flooded and the water pump would seem to confirm this but it's not clear if the pump was used to create the lake by pumping water in or if it was used to pump water out presumably so they could mine a bit more. What do you think?
Im not sure what the pumps were for but i think it could have been to clean the water out so they could mine more as you say. It was a very deep hole - maybe 100-300ft deep. Yes I got wet and muddy as hell.
hey mathew your stuff is awesome im local from pembrokeshire and would love to join you some time i know of a few interesting bunkers myself in pembrokeshire that may interest you as well.
Iver only just seen this comment. I do miss them sometimes. Let me know via pm where these bunkers are on truthsee@gotadsl.co.uk and perhaps i can come over to film them sometime.
Yes the diving club used to come in via on of the lowest level tunnels which comes out on a pathway with much easier access. Since they no longer use the place to dive the doorway has been sealed.

paradise. what an absolute stunning place. i would literally travel all the way from here in oz to camp out in the caves for a few days.

Well, that certainly had me clutching my chair in terror just watching you lot and when I saw how deep the water was...that was the scariest moment of all!
It actually got me scared being there because of the depth of the cave and all the dangerously slippy mud. I was glad to be out of there alive.
I was glad you did too!
@@Dormices Did you see how the place we were standing on was hovering out over the water. Like there was nothing underneath us.
Filming area of the demolition man!?? Good music ypu have found! 👍
I have a book. “Iron in the soul”. Written all about those caves. Age. Pictures and maps. And a story of a missing person.
That sounds mad!!
How do I get it?

This video would be so much better if it didn't have the really annoying music/noise all the way through it
Must have been tough to get this footage, thanks, Matt.

Suspiciously like Cemex to me....
Are thesecaves old dolomite mines?
Amazing guys
Any idea what they were originally mining out of there?
How many poor children have been taken down there?
Not heard of any children but there was a body found down there, a Cardiff prostitute I believe.
First right hand path on the entrance rd upto Castell Coch, the whole area is peppered with small systems.
Opposite side of the river
Romans mined there as well
Wow that was awesome! Hell of a place for a bunker...be safe guys! Cheers from Vermont USA
The sound effects and music spoilt it for me.
Nice work.. But tell me you didn't climb out via that rope...?
Yes, we did.
It's not vertical. It's a series of muddy steps that you probably do when dry without the rope.
that music is cuts that have been used on many scits and films the best known is the shining , some of it is called the ghoul...
where is this? I'm trying to explore every cave in South Wales if you could help that would be fab
