Man you're a legend; I was going to buy a new Laptop cos I gave up trying to fix mine, or even send it to a repair shop. That is until I came across this video and did the bad RAM test. It worked like magic. One of my RAMs was causing my laptop not to turn on for some reason. You saved me money and stress man, thanks a lot - wish you the best
Bro THANK YOU MAN. I was cleaning my. Keyboard and had to disconnect a few cables I realized that my screen wasn't popping up. Turns out I hadn't fully reconnected my lcd cable. Ur a hero man Thankz.
Just an FYI: For me and the Samsung Notebook 7, Windows updates replaced the display driver which was causing the black screen. Every time after an update the computer came on but nothing appeared on the screen. Plugged it up via HDMI to the tv and it showed everything working perfectly fine. I had to hunt down an older driver and install it. Before replacing the hardware, make sure the dreaded Windows updates aren't ruining your older laptops.
Very coherently explained - you'd make a good teacher! My Dell goes dark across one side of the screen. Plugged it into an external monitor and I get a bright, clear output, so I guess it's either the LCD cable or the LCD screen. Fingers crossed - will get back and let you know the results.
Hi Robert, I am having same issue as you. After replacing the bottom cage of the laptop because hinges were broken, once put together, screen was faint. Can barely see anything. However, when connected to external monitor, laptop works as expected. Though can not see anything on the laptop screen. Were you able to fix your issue? if yes, what did it for you?
Oh dear! After wasting my day trying to figure out if I broke something. This saved me! Found out one of my Dell Latitude ram chips is not working....no wonder my laptop has been super slow. Thanks
my laptop screen was very dimm, I put it to the flashlight and saw the dell logo but it simply wouldnt boot up. Then I plugged it in to a monitor and nothing happened so I changed the cmos battery and after that the screen was still dimm but when I plugged it into a monitor again and went into the bios it worked! ill have to install back my ssd since I removed it because I thought it was dead but after that everything should work, thank you so much!!
Thank you! we had a laptop that we dropped and they were charging £400 to fix it, i replaces the CR202 battery for a pound and the hardrive and ram from another broken sytstem and it works like a dream thanks
Thank for for taking the time to make this video. I know that you are helping a lot of people. I think I have the LCD issue. Fingers crossed that it is an easy fix!
Hi there. I just wanted to say you saved me a lot. My fix was the cheap RAM chip. I have two slots/ports for RAM but only one RAM chip. I popped it out and placed in the other slot.. Bingo. Thank again.
Omg omg omg I just got my laptop out of the loft to use today and It wouldn't start, I was thinking of upgrading the ram and adding and ssd, and now 1 of my ram stick is faulty gives me a reason to do so thank you so much
@@PC_Monkey sir i have faced this issue but it got fixed by just cleaning the ram, today my laptop was on sleep mode and when i came back it wasnt turning on and shutted off, i tired cleaning the ram again and putting it back in but its not working please help me sir. 🙏🙏
Thank you. You just saved me a bunch of hassle and I was able to pull my files from my computer now that I can see the screen. Thank you so much your awesome. I hope you have a great day and I hope much joy is headed your way.
@@PC_Monkey greetings. My issue goes further than the ram. After removing it - the screen turns on, but goes black again right after booting, just before I can enter my password and sign in. May you please help me🙏
A great video even though I already knew all those you taught I wanted to watch it again. Unfortunately my old laptop isn’t working anyways it has illuminating lcd, but no display and after like 20 seconds it shuts down.
Thanks. Pulled the ram sticks out and just re-seated back into place and boots up now. I think the delivery drivers might have thrown it around a little
Great video. To expand the question just a bit, if I may....my Dell 1545 boots up and displays the screen fine for about 2-3 minutes, then the laptop screen goes blank, but if I have it connected to an external monitor, the image is perfect. Having watched a different video, I successfully replaced the screen inverter, but I still have exactly the same problem. Haven't tried the RAM test yet, but I'll have done that before you have a chance to respond, and of course, if that should solve the problem, I'll update you. But I haven't seen this precise set of symptoms described in any other posts, so I'm wondering what they might suggest to you. Thanks!
I would assume that is an issue with the LCD or LCD Cable, if its displaying correctly to an external monitor. I would try 'reseating' the cable first. If that fails to help, replace the LCD and LCD cable one-at-a-time until you find the issue
Thank you so much, you helped me solve my problem. My problem was with the CMOS, i just replugged the cable connected to it and it did the trick. QESTION: Does that means that i have to get a new CMOS pile?
I have a PC and my screen shows black screen from the get -go. Not even the motherboard logo! I am sure that the PC itself is working and I am in the Windows! This is completely random! Should I follow the same procedure? Does your screen sometimes show black screen from the get-go or always does not show anything from the get-go?
Amazing video.. I amsuffering through the same issue and some has told me to change the motherboard altogether but i think i have to go through ur techniques first.. Besides, what motherboard should i use for DELL Latitude E6430
Your computer turns on but the screen stays black? If the screen is black, what are the signs the computer is on? Lights? Sounds? Fan? Is this your motherboard? ebay.us/x8B7IK
So I have an Acer laptop and a tv I use as a second monitor, my laptop has a black screen but my tv shows what is usual. I go to the project section and switch it so it shows what’s on my laptop. My laptop thinks it’s on but my laptop screen is black
I have a G7. Great video. Step by step made it very easy. My laptop falls into the very first description. turns on, keyboard lights up, fans kick on, external monitor works. I did the LCD self test and the colors flash on my laptops screen, but still no picture. The webcam still works as well. still black screen. Pulled the ram. one at at time, no picture when one pulled. pulled the CMOS battery, still no. When I unplug the HDMI, the laptop even makes the noise indicating something was unplugged. Did windows key + p - The computer is thinking the screen is on (it does not show there is an external display plugged in - thinks it is the laptop screen). If I click on the toll bar bottom right corner, the laptop has 'wired display' lit up. help?
If the computer went through all those tests and no luck, and also if the computer is displaying fine to an external monitor, I would guess that there is an issue with your LCD or LCD Cable at this point. I would replace them one-at-a-time until you find the one that is faulty
@@PC_Monkey hi, sir , I have the same issue but my laptop Dell Latitude E7270 1. display works fine in bios setup or while power on+D function shows all color 2. Display show on startup 3. My laptop dell Inspiron n5110 is working fine but the screen goes blank. when connected to extend monitor laptop is working fine. it boots fine from dell logo screen to windows but when it gets to where it should boot to desktop then it goes blank. What is it?
I only communicate on RUclips for now. What does the screen say? You can also post to your own channel and message me back here when you do. I can then view and then advise :)
You can also just turn it off and back on if you didn't already try that. I did and it worked. Idk what the issue was. It was working, but the computer was dim, and when I turned it off and back on it worked again.
Hi there thank you for your helpful videos, how about blinking screen goes to blank screen for Dell Laptop Latitude 5480? I do a bunch of stuff and then ending up downgrading my windows from win 10 to win 7 now my laptop are usable but I didn't maximize the spec of the laptop to it's maximum potential due to downgraded graphics driver windows software etc. Thank you in advance for your response.
@@timothyjohntabigoon5472 If your computer turns on but the screen stays black, you would troubleshoot the issue the way that is shown here in this video.
I haven't used my Dell laptop for 2 years. I stowed it away in a box. Today, I turned it on - Black screen. A white and orange light is flashing on the bottom right corner. The keyboard lights up, but that's all. Thanks for your help.
@@jamig.7254 Are there any signs of life at all when you try to turn it on? Lights? Fan, Motherboard, or Hard Drive sounds? Anything seen on the screen?
@@PC_Monkey Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, the keyboard lights up. The light indicator for the battery flashes white and orange. However, when I charged it for many hours, the monitor was still black. The keyboard remains lit. Interestingly enough, when I first plugged it in, I could feel the AC battery adapter warming up. Then later, it seemed inactive and cool to the touch, yet the light was still on that attached the adapter cable to the back of the computer. After charging for hours, I checked the monitor for the last time, still nothing. When I removed the battery cable and closed the monitor, the battery light (bottom right corner) was flashing rapidly in white.
@@jamig.7254 This video is for a computer that turns on but the screen does not work. If the only signs of life your computer has are some lights, then its possible that its not really turning on and engaging the Hard Drive, Fan, etx. I have a question : If my computer is turning on but my screen is lighted on with Wight and grey color with no display no nothing. So what to do ? Is this video will be helpful ?
Thank you for this vid! I'm actually hooked up to an external monitor now. Do you think I should just buy the LCD cable and go with that fix first? I watched the vid to fix it and I literally have to take the entire laptop apart LOL. Thanks for your help in advance.
It depends on which you want to do first. LCD and LCD Cables as you mentioned are hard to get to. LCD Cables are cheaper to purchase but harder to put in. Its up to you and your laptop which you would rather start with :) You can also try just reseating the cable from both ends first before replacing it. Perhaps its just loose
I tried replacing my keyboard on my Dell G3 3579 and now it won’t boot. After pressing the power button it turns on, has a blank screen and the fans seem to go into overdrive. After 10-15 seconds it turns back off. I’ve tried reconnecting all cables and resetting the CMOS. After first replacing the keyboard the plastic clip that holds the ram in place broke and I had to switch slots… so now unfortunately I can’t test the original slot. What do you suggest should be my next steps?
I have a Dell 7559. The screen goes black and when I Unplug and replug the battery cable as well as the RAM it starts to work. Also, once the computer is on with it's screen; and at this point now i connect it with an external monitor, the laptop screen stops functioning even if i remove the hdmi wire and then it only works with the external monitor from that point. From what i have seen on the net, it's a common issue with this model. Any suggestion would be great. And could this be software issue ?
Thanks for the great video. I cracked my 7480 screen and ordered another one. I swapped it out and when I fired it up it illuminated but no display. I thought maybe I damaged the cable so I re-installed the old screen and it worked - cracked but worked. I assumed it was a faulty screen so I ordered another (Amazon). I put the new one in and same issue - backlit but no display. I'm assuming RAM is fine since it booted up just fine with the cracked screen. What do you think is the cause? Hope you can help. Thanks.
When you are installing the new LCD, do you have the battery removed and the power adapter unplugged? If not, that could be burning out the LCD when you attach the LCD Cable. If thats not the issue, you could just be looking a compatibility issue or bad replacements
@@PC_Monkey Thanks for the quick reply. The instructions I received from another video (before watching yours) were to disconnect the ac power cable, open the unit, disconnect the power cable that connects to the mother board, and press the power button to insure complete drainage. Two new screens, both backlit with no display, yet even now my cracked screen still works. Totally flummoxed, dude.
@@vesubioromo9425 Yes, those are the correct steps. Very strange. If the other LCD works then your looking at an issue with the replacement LCDs. Hard to know more without looking at it :(
hi, and thanks for the vids. I just replaced a cracked screen on a Dell Insperion 15 3000, no problems until I powered it back nup, I feel the HD spinning up, but screen is blank still, the unit worked before. Any thoughts?
Thanks for sharing such great videos that help people !! I have an old Dell xps L502x and it takes 5-10 attempts to start. I always hear the fan noise & see power light up but screen doesn't light up. Most of the time I have external monitor attached & even that doesn't show any light. So is this the same issue & should I try the same fixes as you have suggested or something else will do ? Thanks !!
@@PC_Monkey thanks for replying & helping all of us with ur nice videos. I have tried resetting RAM & that didn't fix. I guess CMOS could be the issue as my system is around 9 years old & whenever I restart the system instantly after the shutdown it works but whenever I try it after a day then it has this issue. I will leave my system on charge tonight even after shutdown so that CMOS keep getting power, may be this will help in diagnose of CMOS issue. Even according to this post www.hp.com/us-en/shop/tech-takes/what-is-cmos-battery-how-to-remove-and-replace: The CMOS battery gets charged whenever your laptop is plugged in. It’s only when your laptop is unplugged that the battery loses charge. Most batteries will last 2 to 10 years from the date they’re manufactured. The more you leave your laptop plugged in, the longer your battery will last. Here are the CMOS battery failure symptoms: The laptop has difficult booting up etc. Thanks again, really appreciate it :)
Hi! Lovely video. I have the same issue but with a flashing error code from the led by the power. Two amber, two white = no memory. I don’t think this is the actual problem though. I changed the battery a few weeks ago and then last week the cpu fan seemed to stop working. Later the laptop started to do a diagnostic test and beeped loudly saying the fan wasn’t working. I ordered a new fan but in the meantime the laptop continued to work. We just used it for light tasks and it didn’t seem to be overheating. Then I struggled to login as the keyboards was really slow to respond. Now it is at the stage of your video where not even the logo comes up, just the keyboard lights and a little bit of heat from the processor area. The RAM seems fine and I’ve orders a new CMOS in case. I’m tending to think it has gone into a safe mode as it knows the fan isn’t working? Or does the error code mean there’s something more sinister going on, maybe the motherboard? Any help would be amazing thank you
Thanks. If external monitor is fine, but notebook screen is really faded - when I put a flashlight on my phone on, I can see what is on the laptop monitor, is it bad LCD?
I skipped the first few steps with the RAM and CMOS battery (sorry) and went right to plugging in an external monitor with a HDMI cable. Did not disconnect the LCD cable either. Display on the external monitor works perfect, and the laptop display is still really really faint. Do I still need to do the RAM and CMOS battery steps, or can I move ahead to the LCD cable replacement and/or LCD screen replacement?
No. You can go ahead and assume the issue is either a bad LCD or LCD Cable. I would reseat the cable at both ends just in case its just loose but if that fails, either it or the LCD may be bad.
Nice video. I have a Dell laptop that the other day the screen wouldn't turn on. After turning it off and then turning it back on several times it finally for some reason turn back on this morning when I turn it back on the monitor wouldn't turn on. I use an external monitor also at the same time and the same thing is happening to it as well. I just tried to turn it on and just turned on again right now. What do you think it might be? Thank you
If the screen is black, what are the signs that the computer is on? Lights, Fan, Motherboard or Hard Drive sounds? The same not working then working after several attempts happens with the external monitor as well?
Hello, thank you for these videos! I have a Dell inspiron which works with ubuntu. All of a sudden, today, it has a black screen when I turn it on. Not sure why and how to fix it. I don't even see the "Dell" welcome note. Any ideas on where to start?

Great vid. I got a quick question. I have a dell 15 7548 where the internal display doesn't work. However, when it's hooked up to an extertnal monitor (by pressing the FN button), everything works fine. I've already checked the RAM, CMOS battery and change an entire screen assembly, but the problem persists. I've checked online and apparently there's some type of chip that needs to be re-soldered on the MB. I was wondering whether you can share an insight as to the potential cause of this before I go ahead with soldering. THX. Much appreciated.
Usually, if the computer displays fine to an external monitor but will not display to its own, the issue is with the computer's LCD or LCD Cable. Try replacing the cable first as its cheaper :) Then if that does not work, replace the LCD.
My dell inspiron 24 3455 has black screen it powers on the light for the power button lights when I press to eject the CD it works normally my only issue is the black screen wat should I replace?

My computer is always plugged in while I'm working with it since the battery is broken and my laptop wouldn't even detect it, and no I don't use any surge protector its just connected to the wall
@@ajakrami9936 Both those things are very bad for battery health. Try using a surge protector and not having the computer plugged in all the time after you replace the battery. Batteries need to discharge and charge regularly to stay healthy.
Thank you very much. I use a Dell XPS 15 9560. The screen won't come on at all, not even to display the loading screen, but connecting an external display via Hdmi works fine. On checking display settings, it keeps saying internal display not active, and i can't even see the details of my internal display monitor in the settings. What could the issue be?
Remember to check the FAQ's on my videos! It could save you time getting an answer to common questions :) If your computer displays to an external monitor but not to its own LCD, then your issue is most likely with your LCD or LCD Cable. Try 'Reseating' the cable first by unplugging it from both ends. Then, plug it back in. If that does not help, replace the LCD and Cable one at a time. Let me know if you would like help locating the correct parts :)
thanks, i had replaced my LCD cable because it worked with an external monitor but I knew it would probably be the screen, I think with the age of the laptop its probably better to just replace it

Great explanation ..👍

Thanks for getting back to me.

Even according to this post www.hp.com/us-en/shop/tech-takes/what-is-cmos-battery-how-to-remove-and-replace:
The CMOS battery gets charged whenever your laptop is plugged in. It’s only when your laptop is unplugged that the battery loses charge. Most batteries will last 2 to 10 years from the date they’re manufactured. The more you leave your laptop plugged in, the longer your battery will last.
Here are the CMOS battery failure symptoms:
The laptop has difficult booting up etc.

Yes. Most likely is the LCD or the LCD Cable

You probably missed your tests by now, but in the future, try opening up the laptop, remove the battery (and the RAM as well just in case) and hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Then plug in the AC adapter (with the battery still disconnected -- put the RAM back though) and see if it works. If it does, plug in the battery and test it again.
Hi, mt laptop starts up like you say, you hear the insides turning on, the fan kicks on, it shows the dell logo but no loading and then says it couldn't start, click restart or advanced settings but Everytime I click on restart, shutdown, fix the problem with a restart or diagnose the problem, none of it works, couldn't fix the problem, couldn't diagnose the problem.
For that issue, your would refer to this video instead; ruclips.net/video/w3XfE-ghbhs/видео.html
What do you mean, you couldn't diagnose the problem? Did the diagnostic test not work? What happened?
I have the same model, but it only has 1 ram, It is ok to remove it and test it if the screen will back to normal??
No. You will need to purchase another RAM to perform that test. No RAM will cause the same issue.
Thank you. God bless.

@@PC_Monkey doesn’t work :(
@@PC_Monkey hy bro this happened to me when i trying to install windows and change some settings. How can i fix it
@@asiaicon4312 If the screen is black, what are the signs the computer is on? Lights? Sounds? Fan?
If the computer turn on but the screen does not work, have you tried the steps seen here yet?
What if it turned out that I have a problem with my hard drive? Just done with my diagnostic. Hope you can help me. Thanks and God bless.
Did the diagnostic find an error with your HDD? What was the error and what was happening with your computer?
Popping ram out did it for me. at first there was no power with either out then i tried putting both back and making sure they were seated then it came on. im still suspicious ones bad, if i go into computer properties will it tell me if its reading one or both?
It will tell you what its reading, yes :) It could be that one was incorrectly plugged in. They come loose sometimes. Well done !!
@@PC_Monkey ok so then both are good then it say 8g and the card says 4g so obviously both are good. Cool thank you fellow RUclips instructor 👊

I have this dell inspiron 15 3000, i just made it stayed open in a while when I came back the monitor gets black. I don't know and I don't have any tools in opening the laptop. Should I bring it to a technician? What should I do to turn it off?
Does the screen go black or does the computer turn off? If the screen is black, what are the signs the computer is on? Lights? Sounds? Fan?
My Dell Inspiron 15 5779 has an extremely dim screen to where I can barely see anything. However, external monitor works fine. I watched the video, but what step should I start with first? Could it be the RAM or C battery?
Most likely the LCD or LCD Cable. Try reseating the cable. If that does not work, replace one at a time.
PC Monkey got a video on reseating the cable?
Great help and great presentation!
Thanks !! Glad this video was helpful :):)
Thank you, removed the top ram Dimm 2, and sure enough the Screen turned on, do I need to check Dimm 1 also, ??
Most likely, both sticks are not bad. Especially if the computer turned on with the one in it. You should be good :)
Thank you very much bought the ram chip and labtop working like new!
@@davidflamencocotto4910 Great to hear !! Always here to help :):)
I’ve basically got 2 problems. 1. Boot loop. 2. When in boot loop, the screen doesn’t turn on and displays nothing. This means I can’t access BIOS. I turn on the laptop, the keyboard lights up and the screen doesn’t turn on then the keyboard lights stay on for a few seconds and then the laptop turns off and on again and repeats.
For a computer that does not turn on, try this video first; ruclips.net/video/P3I7dDpkJps/видео.html. Let me know how that goes :)
