A Gest of Robin Hood is the second game in the Irregular Conflicts Series, further adapting the COIN system to depict peasant revolts, feudal tax collection, and outlaw activities in late 12th century medieval England. Transposing one of GMT’s most popular systems into a simpler format and a more approachable setting makes A Gest of Robin Hood perfect for newcomers to wargaming. At the same time, it also offers a tight challenge for more experienced wargamers who can enjoy a tense asymmetric duel in under an hour.
    Highlights:
An ideal entry point to the COIN system and the ICS series: a two player, relatively low complexity game with a family friendly theme that plays in one hour and introduces all of the key concepts found in the COIN series.
A new hidden movement mechanic: The Sheriff will chase Robin Hood across Nottinghamshire to prevent him from organizing peasant revolts, but Robin can sneak away and hide amongst his Merry Men.
A second new hidden movement mechanic: Carriages serve as a simple twist on Lines of Communication, transferring wealth back to Nottingham while providing a target for robbery by the Merry Men-but some of them might be a trap, containing concealed Henchmen!
Random encounters with rich travelers: Robin Hood draws from the Travelers Deck when conducting a Rob action, then decides whether to play it safe or demand a larger ‘donation’ with potentially negative consequences.
A streamlined sequence of play: Further developing the two-player sequence of play first found in Colonial Twilight, this new sequence of play is easy to understand while still presenting difficult tactical decisions.

Robin Hood sounds like a great theme for a COIN game. This has been on my radar too since Rodney showed it on Watch I.P.
First I've heard of the "Irregular Conflicts Series" Sounds like this will be my introduction to that series. Pity it doesn't have a solo mode or even a means of playing it two handed apparently
Is this the first COIN game to stray from the history theme?

It is a great theme, and does fit with the theme of insurgency and counter insurgency. And I think it's the first of the Irregular Conflicts series, but I'd have to check that.
There's no solo mode because the game has some bluffing and deception that wouldn't work with a 'bot.
It might be the first one to stray from the history, but it won't be the last, as Red Dust Rebellion is coming soon, and that one is about insurgency on Mars...

@@LegendaryTactics I saw the box showed Volume II in your video 0:35, so I had to check GMT's site. Vol. 1 is a game I never heard of "Vijayanagara: The Deccan Empires of Medieval India, 1290-1398"

Ah, yes, that's right. I have no idea how to pronounce that though! :) And I haven't played it yet.

That would be great, but sadly, they're just baggies to organize the pieces.

I have high hopes for this game as a way to introduce my wife to the COIN series, although I am under no delusions about a game GMT rates as medium to low complexity (given that the rating is probably skewed towards what they view as a typical GMT gamer). Still, fingers crossed :) In the video you mentioned you already taught & played it w/ your son....yet you are unboxing it so I was left wondering do you own 2 physical copies, or perhaps you played online using the Vassal mod?

I taught my son to play it over the last weekend, and he actually beat me. I think it's pretty easy to teach overall. Just play a couple of learning games with minimal deception going on, and play the same side multiple times before switching. I think it's about as easy as a COIN series game can be, and I can say that my son, who has never played a COIN game, and has little interest in board games in general, enjoyed it. It's questionable as to whether it will lead to him trying out the other COIN games in the series, but one always clings to hope.
To answer your timing question, I filmed the unboxing during the week last week, before we played it on the weekend.
