- Blanching your fish in boiling seawater has 2 functions. It partly cooks the fish and adds salt for flavor. Then it is into the pan to finish it off in hot butter. Join my son Jona, my dog Pace, and myself as we head out into the Tasman bay for some fishing here in New Zealand. Snapper is currently plentiful but we also catch, Kahawai, Mackerel, and Piper (garfish). We are using the homemade punt and cooking on a homemade wood burner built from an old gas bottle. I wrote that 20 years ago, recorded it 4 years ago and just released it finally on my new Album, Blues Nights & Reggae Days. Young Celia MacAlpine doing an epic job on BVs, fiddle and Bass plus Richard Price tearing it up on lead guitar player my old 79 strat.

That Garfish, we call them ballyhoo in the Florida keys and they make the absolute best trolling bait for all the big pelagic fish, idk if you’ve got Tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi or sailfish down there but put a skirt on those babies and troll! Thanks for the video Clay.

When we came across Piper when we were spearing flounder we just wacked them on the back with the spear it broke their spine and in the sack they went they are tasty not to mention the best dead bait for kingi's and big snapper.

Hey Clay, no harm in putting a live piper or two next time your out for the odd king. If there are mackerel and piper about in that spot then there's surely the odd king haunting around. Six ounce sinker on the mainline then a nice big circle hook 1.5 m trace 80pnd cast into the burley trail so it won't f*** with your snapper fishing. Just a humble suggestion as i hear kings visit nelson this time of year? Would be epic to see you get one

That Maxel Rage setup you have will catch the Kingis Clay. I have one on a Jigstar SlowJerk 2. Bloody good fun mate, heaps of work and fishing required to land them, but your small jigging setup is more than capable mate. Give it a whirl next time. Use 60 to 120 gr slow pitch jigs for that setup, as opposed to heavy speed jigs. Catch bloody good snaps too.

That is very cool mate. Make sure he get a lot of socialization with people and other dogs in his first 3 months. This is very important for dogo. Take him to puppy classes where he meets lots of other pups and learns to interact and form good social habits. If not you may end up with a dog that in incontrollable down the track. Good luck.

Mate put that boat at the front drive of your property (similar to military bases with sentry pieces, gun tanks etc)
it would retire well mounted on the side of your drive, painted up and filled with flowers etc, she deserves a retirement home after all the good trips

Flour and water dough tiny hook and a float does it for piper
A slowly retrieved tiny cube of pilly on a 12# trout hook with ultra light tackle... my best is 11 fish off one bait - was nothing but skin on it for the last 3 or 4. Mix some blood & bone with wet sand for burley and it wont bring the birds in ;)
If you got a reuseable plastic bag waterbottle and filled it withthe strongest brine solution you could make. Put the bag of brine in the deep freeze over night. Would that work in your cool box instead of buying ice?

Only take the VHF out when we go wide. We carry flares, a PBL and a couple of cell phones for fishing inside 5 km.
