I'm 72 and have sharpened a few saws. One problem I have always had...keeping the angles correct. Four days ago I received my Timberline sharpener. Solved my 30' problem...and with the carbide bits...I LOVE it. My Stihl 180c cuts like through butter!
Yeah I hear you I have sharpened a few chainsaws myself over the years and always have trouble keeping the angle correct I’ve done pretty good but it’s never precise without some sort of jig. I should’ve bought the timberline in the first place I’m glad to hear it works great for you. The knock off one in this video is junk for sure. Maybe I will bite the bullet and finally buy a timberline. Do you know what they say you get what you pay for, lol. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
I just received the American made Timberline and the quality and workmanship is far superior to the cheaply made Chinese versions. The Timberline is about 2 to 3 times more money, but you truly get what you pay for. I’d buy an American made product over a Chinese made product any day. Thanks for the video and now I can honestly say I’m glad I bought the Timberline Sharpener
I’m glad to hear that one’s much better I’m thinking about purchasing it as well. Thanks for taking the time to come in and letting me know that that one is good
This was a very helpful review short sweet and to the point with all the reasons why it's crap. Great work! You saved me $35.00 and I really appreciate it.
your welcome thank you for taking the time to comment
i am looking at them and wandered why people were having problems. . Thankyou for posting. People say the more expensive brand works better. . I hope so.
I bought one for $15. It has the same issue on sharpening another side. I flipped the stopper (use flat side of the stopper instead of the curve side) and both sides can be sharpened. Mine uses a screw and a nut for stopper mounting. I saw yours is a rivet.
Hi Shane, given the name I’m assuming you are from Maine as well as I am. Just curious if you ever purchased the Timberline? I use my Timberline all the time and love it. The quality is 100% better than those cheap Chinese knock offs. Why buy something when you have to make modifications to it?
Yes I do live in Maine southern Maine to be a little bit more specific, no I never purchased a timberline although I plan to I just have not got around to it. I’ve been sharpening the old fashion way. I agree why buy something if you have to make a bunch of modifications and ends up costing you more time. One of those things that you were hoping would work just as well as a namebrand but of course we all know how that worked out, lol.
The knob in the center is the side to side adjustment, that may eliminate some of the problem that you are having.
Nope tried that it still will not reach the chain properly in one direction. Thanks for the idea.
Looks like you could make this thing work if you spent the time on it. Maybe shorten the tubes and make up a longer and wider chainstop. But as you said Shane, why bother? I'd thought about buying one of these today, so the first thing I do is look on RUclips for a review. Thanks for the warning. Maybe just use it as a paperweight or something?
Yes it might make a pretty cool paperweight lol. I do believe there are much better ones on the market but personally I have not tried them. For this one it is a piece of junk. And I suppose you could take the time to mess with it and get it to work the point is and I think I made it in the video you shouldn’t have to do that with a brand new product. Any rate I’m glad I was able to help thank you for watching the video and taking the time to comment it’s greatly appreciated.
@@shanesmaineshop
What was the brand name of the model you wanted to purchase !? Understanding, that might also be a bust.
40 of these similar looking jigs online. Does anyone know the name of the original ?
More importantly, the name of one that works !.....
@@mderline4412 timberline is the one I hear is good, I have not personally tried just to be clear. Good luck and if you get one please let me know how it works.
I just received my chainsaw from Temu I noticed one side work but the opposite side is not big enough to hold the tooth
thanks, for going out of your way and giving us this warning
You’re welcome, I believe there’s some good versions of this on the market but this is definitely not one of them. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
My problem was that the bolt (on the end with the silver colored head) was not long enough to allow teeth on both sides oh the bar to be secured against the file. The bolt came loose before it could extend far enough to do the job.
Yeah I had quite a bit of trouble with mine as well I think I threw it in the trash
I always feel like I'm not sharpening well when I do it by hand. I had high hopes for this jig so thank you for the warning. What was the jig you liked?
The one I saw good reviews on and wanted to purchase was timberline, it looks pretty much the same as this but from what I’ve seen in other videos and other reviews people seem to like it quite well. Hope all is well with you Ben, haven’t seen a video lately.
@@shanesmaineshop thanks Shane. Been hoping through some things but I hope to be releasing some videos soon...
@@shanesmaineshop ~ Timberline costs $100, and on top of that, then you have to purchase the carbide tips.
@@charlieswearingen500 true but the money i spent on this i might as well have burned, thanks for commenting
@@shanesmaineshop ~ LOL, I came close to buying one, decided against it, and purchased a 2-in-1 Stihl file sharpener for $30. Works great...
Just bought one for under $11. Wish I had seen this review first. Only good news is I didn't spend $35😅
Yeah, sorry I didn’t see the video ahead of time. Thank you for taking the time to comment
Bought one and I have yet to successfully use it. The barrels are the issue. Don't waste your money !!!!!
Yup I agree
I also bought one of these, it will sharpen only ONE side correctly, the problem is the aluminum pawl design is way off compared to a Timberline pawl, it is not even close to being the right width to be able to engage the back side of the tooth so you can apply preasure with top adjustments......😢
So you now own a ONE side sharpener.
The other problem is even if they redesigned the pawl so it would engage BOTH teeth; the cheesy cutters are of extreme low quality, I could only get ONE sharpening before they were basically " worn smooth"...... If the chinaman was to re-engineer the pawl design ( copy a Timberline one 😅)
And send carbide cutters then these would be ok......
Well I know what to expect when mine arrives. On the plus, it seems the price has come down and I got a knockoff for 15. I just flip the tooth stop up like you said, itd still act as an angle guide.
I have the same problems that you mentioned. Back to the old file.
Yup thats what i did, the file always seems to work. Thanks for commenting.
I don't know where you bought it but temu has it for $10, looks like same one you bought, good vid thanx
I got this one on Amazon. It’s a knock off of the namebrand which I believe is timberline. I have not had the opportunity to test that one but this one in this particular video is no good. Thanks for commenting
What is the original company that made them right, what is the make of the good one?
Timber-line was one of the first, but in full disclosure I have not had the opportunity to test it. If you get it please let me know how it works as it is on my list for future reviews.
@@shanesmaineshop Timber-line a király
@@shanesmaineshopna i think it was arnold back in the 70s
I just got mine from Amazon, $19 and it works premium, you just have to learn how to use it. And another guy was talking about the bolt on the Silver Center, Thang that catches a tooth is too short, but I’ll fix that easy.
I’m glad you like it, But it has nothing to do with learning how to use it. If you get one it’s made with quality it works just fine this one is a piece of junk. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
use your long file instead ?
Yeah a regular file is way better than this particular unit here that’s for sure. Thanks for commenting
Thank you!
You’re welcome, thank you for taking the time to comment
A timberline chainsaw sharpener may be a better option.
Yes I think so, I have heard that those are the ones to get. Thanks again for taking the time to comment.
Move your silver dog to the other end of your orange holder that will let you do the other side of the chain
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I’ve done that as well as a few other tricks to make this work the bottom line is this particular one is a piece of junk.
Wow!
All you need to do is put a small spacer on the tube side where the bar sits so it moves it 1/8 over and grab the teeth both ways. Easy fix.
You must have a different unit than me, because that will not fix my problem with this device. The tube is too long if I put a spacer that will actually back the sharpener away even more if I put it on the other side so it moves the actual sharpener closer then it hits the tool housing even worse. So may be an easy fix for the device you have but certainly not for this one. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
2:42 😂
Great concept, but poor quality and lack of proper design. Thanks for taking a $35 hit to tell us, man!
Yup LOL i was trying to think of something positive to say but........ Thanks for commenting
Make the guide tube shorter to sharpen the other side, it will allow the grinder to reach the chain.
That might solve one of the problems for sure however it still does not fit correctly And you should not have to do that to a brand new tool. For that reason there’s no way I would recommend this to anybody at least this particular model. Thanks for taking the time to comment
@@shanesmaineshop Ajánlom a Timberlin-t
How much
I think I paid about 35 or $40 for this one and it’s not worth one bit of it. Thanks for the question
Couldn't you just use a round file through the guide Holes that the crank/file goes through if anything.
You could if the round file wasn’t all file because that particular then grind down RUclips and it won’t be accurate
@@shanesmaineshop ,, You could just put heat shrink on file thats in the tube ,, or do Red neck thing and wrap the file with tape ,,lol, lol
@@hermanmoore8514 I suppose you might be able to do that. Not sure if it would work. Thanks for commenting
Ahh, I wish I'd read your review before buying it, dammit. Oh well, as you say, not a lot of money and a lesson in being too quick on the credit card, doh!
Sorry you saw my review too late. I keep wanting to buy the name brand one but have not done so yet. Thanks for taking the time to comment
Totally agree with your findings, absolute rubbish but they got our money.
Yes unfortunately they did. Thanks for taking the time to comment
I got the cheap $20 special from china and have had no problems with it. It has worked well. It saves a ton of time on sharpening by hand.
Can't say I have had the same experience as you. I am on my second year of cutting firewood with it. Just ordered in some new bits! I think it was $20 well spent.
I’m glad you got one that actually worked I’ve talked to several people now that have had no luck with them whatsoever at least the cheap ones. Of course there’s no telling the one we have is made by the Same company as the one you have. Thanks for commenting
I have exactly the same one and it works perfectly! It seems to be all in the setup and the instructions could be clearer admittedly but once you figure it out it does the job well.
Cut (shorten) the tube !
That won’t work it’s not the only problem but thanks for the idea, I already thought of that.
I stupidly bought this and it won’t fit over the chain bar. I wasted my money! Junk!
Sorry you bought this as well. Definitely a waste of money in my opinion too
I was grossly disappointed in this device. The machining alignment is poor. The rotary file is short lived. If a quality unit exists, I'd have to try it first. If you hit a nail, maybe, it would bring the edge back into the 30° curve. Sorry, I spent money on it.
I agree with all of your observations of this knock off tool. I’m sorry you spent money on it as well.
That thing is a piece of crap. Bought one and returned it after 10 minutes. Don’t waste your time Orr money. You cannot do both sides without re-adjusting which defeats the whole purpose
Thanks for your real world, common sense review of a poor product.
Thanks
You doing something wrong another person has the same exact tool and his work . Check it out on youtube
I have checked out many, the good brand work great but the knock offs like the one I have are junk. Thanks for commenting
I got one of these, jest a load of rubbish , the sharpening tool wore out first pass, the adjuster did not work either.
Throw it in the bin , better with a file.
I absolutely agree. Thanks for taking the time to comment
i saw them on ebay 20.00 and less
hope you get a good one. Thanks for commenting
wow just found 2 for 17.90 fre shiping on ebay comes with 3 sharping stones
@@JoeH-qu5mv I hope you have better luck. I personally would not buy one again unless it was the namebrand timberline. Hopefully The ones you see are made purchase are better than the one I got. For that price I’d be pretty skeptical though. Good luck and thank you for commenting.
