    • @Smile936
      @Smile936 Месяц назад +9

      The thing I wonder is… If I only spoke the one language, would I still forget the word? Are the additional languages at least actually helping give me _something_ rather than drawing a blank? 🤔

    • @octaviateo
      @octaviateo Месяц назад +13

      @Smile936 I think even if it's just one language and it's a word you don't use very often, potentially you could forget.
      A personal example is the word "colander"; the thing used to sift cooked pasta - I just consistently call a pasta-sieve. Every now and then, I still forget the word because I just don't use it very often.
      A different language can be helpful for yourself and serve to be educational to others. The struggle comes with translating it to the common language if the other people don't speak the foreign language.

Sometimes we stick /-ed/ or /-ing/ behind the verb or plural ending /-s/ behind the noun in our language because conjugation is a foreign thing. Other times we end up speaking our language using English grammar.

    What's funny on how I can relate with him, I am an Indonesian, raised by parents speaking more Sundanese than Indonesian, taught English by my late sister, and I recently taught myself Korean. My head hurts and people are confused with me. On one occasion, I told my friend, "X-씨, can you please pangmukakeun pintu depan?" Which translates as "Dear X, can you please open the front door?" I remember thinking at that time, "Bye-lingual go brrrrr"

    English and Japanese being my second and third language, I can relate so much! Even though my Japanese is still pretty shoddy. It’s always the vocab in the wrong language that you remember first. 😭

    I'm trilingual, and there are times when I'm thinking in my second language, and suddenly someone asks me something in my first language, it'd take a second for me to reply in that first language because I kind of have to "switch" mentally 😂

    I had this moment seeral times. My first language is Indonesian and I forgot the word for "potato" and my friends, all of a sudden, also forgot what "potato" in Indonesian is. We suddenly remembered 5 minutes later when I said "I wanna go buy 'keripik kentang' (potato chips)" and we went "OOOOH, RIGHT! KENTANG!"
