Sammy had a tough life as a kid. His father came home from WWII with some mental challenges and became an alcoholic. His father also was abusive towards his family. Sometimes, they had to escape from him and spend the night in a southern California orange grove. For a while, the Hagar family worked in the fields and lived on the farms where they worked.
Makes sense to me that he has such s story which I'm sure helped build the man the musician the performer & the songwriter,...& can't forget the artist. It's been said before in order to really play the blues you gotta live it.
Van Halen are on a shortlist of classic rock bands who were able to change their iconic lead singer and find new heights of success. AC/DC is another that comes to mind.
@@Meeshrick Iron Maiden is a good one! Deep Purple, I don't know... I thought they were great with Coverdale actually but failed commercially. How about Black Sabbath with Dio? They killed it commercially with the next two albums until it fell apart.
RushTrader absolutely Sabbath with Dio I'm ashamed I overlooked that one. Good looking out. When I was referring to Deep purple I was thinking of the original singer Rod Evens who sang Hush which was a commercial success then with Ian Gillan became more popular. I also like the David Cloverdale/Glenn Hughes era
You are right very few pulled it off acdc twice when axl sang but Eddie was a 1s in a lifetime when ya seen him live it was so easy for him to just rock the stadium
I played this song for a group of teenage boys just before doing a 10-day, 60 mile Backpack trek in the Sandra de Christo mountains NE New Mexico in 1999.
yeah after David Lee Roth was gone and Sammy Hagar took over singing and lyrics, it literally became a serious band... mature...something that changes the world whereas before it was kind of a party band in my opinion (not to put aside Eddie's amazing and influential guitar that was already changing the world) it really came down to Eddie Van Halen as a music composer meeting the right Lyricist to express his music. This song "right now" is one of the greatest masterpieces of any generation.
Yep. The DLR era was all about girls and parties. When Sammy came in it got pretty serious. Not just the topics and the lyrics but the stage presence. Dave was a showman wearing glitzy outfits and flying around the stage and just whoopin it up. Sammy is a true, no-nonsense rocker. It was REALLY weird to see them do songs like Jump with Sammy. The whole thing became something different. But not bad, just different.
You nailed it! My favorite VH song of the Sammy Hagar era. I wake up to this song every morning as my alarm. Gets me going for the day. Even after two years since he passed, I miss Eddie's magic so much. He was the greatest and there will never be another like him.
Thank you Eddie for all of the heart, soul and energy you put into your music. Truly "what dreams are made of" (VH lyrics from Dreams, my fave).. "Music kept me off the streets and out of trouble and gave me something that was mine that no one could take away from me" (quote) -Eddie Van Halen RIP Eddie 💗🎸💐............
Tasha would LOVE the messaging in this song. It's more relevant today than ever before! The song Poundcake is really good by Van Hagar. Running with the Devil is a great Van Halen Track.
It still amazes me to this day how Van Halen went from th " whimsical " as u put it & self-indulgent w/ Roth ( which perfectly summed up my beloved 80s) to completely meaningful songs bout love& life, done in a very different style & became even more successful! If it weren't 4 th unique sound of Eddie's guitar & Alex's drums, u would never guess it was th same band🍻🎸🎶
I remember listening to a Sammy Hagar interview where Sammy said he HATED the idea for the video for Right Now and all of his scowls and sour expressions during filming were really him being frustrated. But then he laughed and said that it was MTV Video of the Year and incredibly popular so what did he know!
Right Now..I'm missing Eddie Van Halen!! RIP. As a big Van Halen with David Lee Roth fan (I love Hager too). I have to say this is probably Van Halen's all time best song.
Van Hagar. I like a lot of it. Some fans hate Sammy. I dont get that. Its definitely a different feel and not as fun as Dave. Sammy is a better singer, Dave is a better frontman. This was Halens first "message" song... and came out right around when Nirvana broke big.. this video was on repeat on MTV.... it was kinda their last moment of cultural relevance before Grunge and Alternative took over the airwaves.
Dave was a dick. They were happier as a band with sammy. Eddie always wanted to play keyboard and dave wouldn't be bothered to pick up a guitar so eddie could play keyboard. I'll always say sammy over dave.
@@friendbesto2599 - If they were so much happier with hagar then why didnt they ask him back in the band instead of dave? Hagar had made it clear through the years that hed be willing to work with them again.
Eddie wrote the main riff of this song after DLR left VH. If they couldn't get a new singer, they were considering doing an album with a bunch of guest vocalists. Eddie wrote this song with Joe Cocker in mind.
Sammy baby!!!!!!!! DLR is & was nothing without Eddie, Alex & Mike . honestly Sammy is a true musician not just a singer BTW he just turned 75 listen to him now, saw him live this year Sammy And Michael still have it!!
During Eddie's solo it says, "Right now Ed's got his hands full" (😇 EDDIE) RIGHT NOW Sammy and Michael Anthony are playing in "The Circle" and can still play this in concert because he helped Eddie write it.
Judgement day Mine all mine Dreams Great Sammy Hagar era Van Halen songs. Both Eddie and Alex Van Halen had 11yrs classical piano training before deciding they wanted to start a rock band.
Such a great band. With both front men. Dave was a total showman. Exactly what the 70's and 80's needed. Sammy was the better musician, better vocalist and overall better dude. .
You nailed the difference between Roth era and Hager era. Both are good. I would suggest Mean Street or Everybody Wants Some as next Roth tracks and for Hagar I would go with Judgement Day and Dreams..
The reason Van Halen seemed more serious is because they got a new singer. You are spot on, Van Halen with David Lee Roth is all about good times and girls. Van Halen with Sammy Hagar is much more about life, relationships and love.... LIFE. Two completely different bands at different stages of life. At 20 what are most guys thinking about? Girls and partying. At 35-40, your entire world is different... no different than the 2 versions of this band.
It was a big change from one front man/lead singer. With that came a change in songwriting. They had to fight their reputation as a party band when David Lee Roth was lead singer.
I've seen reactions to this song before, but this is the first that I've seen with the official video. To me the song is great, but it just isn't whole without the video.
Lots of good VH out there, but yeah, they don't get too serious for the most part even though. the DLR era was more of a party vibe than the Sammy era.
You really need to get more into the Sammy Hagar version of Van Halen. Songs like When Its Love, Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do, Dreams and Why Can't This Be Love and many more that shows how Eddie matured with Sammy in the band. Then there is Humans Being to add into that mix. Best Of Both Worlds. And Finish What You Started
I see you reacted to Porcupine Tree a few months ago, you should react to Fear Of A Blank Planet, by them . It kicks ass. And the leader and lead singer Steven Wilson is a huge Rush fan as am I.
Eddie and Alex lived through a racist hell, as "half breeds" (Indonesian) in Holland and then bullied when they came to America. Their back ground is fascinating
"Right now pigs are becoming lunch." Right. You cannot say the same about turkeys, chickens, fish, cows, crustaceans, most reptiles, rabbits, boars, deer, oysters, mussels, moose. elk, goat, guinea pigs, elk and buffalo. Never would we even consider any of these as lunch. Only pigs. Also RIP to the greatest guitarist of all time.
You'd only heard in commercials because Van Hagar wrote commercials....It's got what it takes....sounds like Burger King....check out some REAL Van Halen...1-5
Right now Van Halen fans are sad... because we lost our guitar God..he took his instrument to another level 😔✌️
Right now, forces are allying against you

definitely a different side with Sammy

I do like the DLR era better for sure, but I have always thought that "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" was a great album.
But dave had the cooler voice.

Well..if you want to get up, you should try "Get Up" from the 5150 album,
( first VH album with Sammy ), you will be wide awake with that song. 😉
You should check out Van Halen - "Romeo Delight".

I never really thought about it but AVH has always had a really good tone to his drumming (cymbals and all), let alone proficiency.
Alex is a very very underappreciated drummer.

Ugh that bass so nasty! And Sammy and Eddie kill it in this song, but yeah will always be the Pepsi song 🤣
More Van Halen!
Check out the movie "Twister", as it is there.
Crystal Pepsi circa 1992-93
Anytime someone bitches and moans about Van Hagar and too much piano I direct them to this song. 😁
I prefer the VanHagar lineup vs Van Halen
The Van Halen music that came out later was the best.....Sammy Hagar was the lead singer / writer
Different band with Sammy from David Lee
Prolly the only. Van Hagar song I like. Otherwise VH only matters with DLR.
Or his solo stuff
change of singers changed focus of the band. Sammy had more mature look, DLR was all about sex, You mention Panama, Jump... Those a DLR songs.
please react to stereo karma by el nino
Hey t u got to do black Sabbath national acrobat. Come show me some love bro
Sammy Hagar was alot better vocalist, David Lee Roth was more of entertainer
I share that exact same sentiment! Dave is more of an entertainer while Sammy is the more serious and soulful singer.
