    As a fan of Greek Mythology, in my opinion, everytime someone tries to make it more "politically correct" without changing everything (family tree, age, how gods behave, how they got together with their partners, etc.), they just end up with something way worse (morally speaking) than the original.
    You either accept the craziness or erase it.

      I feel like Greek Mythology's ugly parts are shown off quite well, it's not sanitized by any means. Yes, Hades and Persephone's relationship isn't as problematic as the original myth, but for this kind of romance, I think it's to the story's benefit. I like how the story shows off the reality of the more problematic parts of these ancient myths.

    Just a minor correction, she doesn't get therapy because of her SA, she gets it because she doesn't feel good enough to be dating Hades. There's a whole thing about her feeling guilty for being unqualified for her job and uncomfortable with the money given/being spent on her so it's about fixing her insecurities and making her more confident, not processing her very real & very new trauma.
    She doesn't have any agency surrounding the aftermath of her SA& it's treated with as much grace as if Apollo stole her credit card. up to the trial arc (which is where I dropped it) she hasn't told anyone about it herself, they've either guessed or vibed it out because powers which has been my least favorite aspect by far. The fact that these characters can sense "damaged goods" is incredibly disgusting.

    I think it's funny because lore olympus has a lot of nuggets where you think there's gonna be something interesting happening, but it's thrown away and squandered. Like i genuinely think Minthe is an interesting character, who could have been utilized in the plot to show the negative and predatory side of Hades. That he really is falling into a pattern of dating younger women, taking advantage of them, and throwing them away when someone younger and prettier comes around. I think persephone's punishment where she spends 10 years in the mortal realm could have been really cool and showed her developing into a cool, badass god,, but we only see it at the very end and in flashbacks, and she was only let off because she used her mary sue powers to save everyone's ass (also that punishment was only there so she could age persephone up to 30 but SHE STILL ACTS 19).

    you don't need explicit confirmation from the author of their intentions when making a piece of art. you decide what framing to use when critiquing. it literally doesn't matter (it can be good extra context though) you just need to judge the project on its own merits. we have the basic framework: it is a romantic drama. we go from there.

    • @malacalico
      @malacalico  2 года назад +20

      it's true that the author should not need to tell their audience what their aim is, since the audience should be able to extrapolate that from their art

      @bubleous 2 года назад +14

      @@malacalico yeah, like i said knowing the artist's intent is a great bonus that lets us look deeper into it, but what matters most isn't what the author intended for it to be, it is what it is.
      media will always get "misinterpreted" from what the author originally intended, but that's part of the fun, that's why most authors dont present a letter of intent every time they publish something. at the end of the day, it's about being presented with the contents of the work and being able to get meaning from that. if the author mean to portray something different than what they ended up putting in their work that's on them.

    I don’t have a problem with self inserts. There nothing wrong with them, HOWEVER, the problem lies within the Mary Sue aspects of the character and the lack of accountability due to the assault. She based Persephone’s entire character around the assault to make us sympathetic towards her to manipulate the audience to root for her rather than have her take responsibility for her actions. Persephone is just allowed to get away with so much and gets special treatment. Don’t get me wrong, assault is horrible, but Persephone isn’t a good person. Just a bad character with a nice veneer. And I only ever feel frustrated with Persephone with how long it takes her to talk about the problem and makes it worse.
    And the whole fight between Persephone and Kronos is total bs. You mean to tell me that an army of gods couldn’t defeat this op colossal titan but a small young sheltered goddess can!? Sounds like something not a Mary Sue can do. The. Before that, she complains being banished for ten years. TEN YEARS. A goddess complains being banished to the mortal realm for ten years. That’s nothing for someone who’s literally IMMORTAL! Ten years is tragically wasted for a mortal. But Persephone can’t accept responsibility for the mortals she’s killed if she’s complaining about being banished for only ten years of her immortal existence. I can’t understand complaining if she missed 100 or maybe 1,000 years with hades, but ten years is nothing for a goddess. She killed mortals which she can’t even be held accountable for by the narrative because “it’s not her fault, she was given the gift of wrath by the goddess of wrath (who’s name I can’t remember).” Bs. Give her some flaws that she actually has to suffer the consequences for and learn from them.
    I want to love Hades. I really do. He’s my favorite character in Greek mythology, but he’s just not as good as he is painted to be in the original. Dude brags about slave labor. And obsessed over Persephone. Idk man.

    • @malacalico
      @malacalico  Год назад +2

      that's an incredibly broad question, and the answers are just about limitless- while a general consensus can be formed of an audience's opinion, there's far too many people in the world to hold generalisations as the be-all, end-all
      anyway, the way a creator feels about their work does inform an audience about the "quality" of it, not necessarily in the sense of it being hyper polished.
      generally, people like to share! they like to share in creating, in feeling, and caring for something,
      even if at the top sits a corporate machine that wants nothing but money, money, money, the people that are creating are passionate- everybody wants to share their story, their ideas, and are working really hard to get it out there despite the capitalist desire to sand down and sanitize everything for the sake of profit
      and stories people care about are never stories about nothing, so people will react to what's there: the experiences shown, the ideas expressed- whether someone resonates or not, it comes down to their experiences, how the ideas of a story measures with their own
      if a creator cares about their ideas, i guess the expectation is that the audience will either relate to, resonate with, or appreciate what is shared
      when an audience is confused or unable to appreciate something for what it is, the assumption is that the creator had mishandled their themes and miscommunicated their ideas, which manifests in inconsistencies, "mistakes", plot holes...
      in addition, a creator's love of their craft does not remove their personal blindspots: biases, prejudice, and privilege. we all have them, and we have to acknowledge them if we want to connect with others, especially to people who fall in our blindspots
      like i said, broad question, near impossible to answer succinctly, but i hope that this made sense!

    "self insert 50 Shades of Grey fanfiction"?
    ...did these people read the same comic I did?
    Pretty sure the comic description makes the author's intent obvious: a retelling of a myth in a new way that makes the characters more "human" and accessible to us, not distant, removed, larger than life beings.
    On the age difference: anyone can be an abuser, regardless of age or sex. I think the comic makes a good point of this by having the younger, female partner be the abuser in the relationship, especially as, though more uncommon than the reverse, Does happen, so it can be potentially empowering to survivors to see, even in a story, that their pain is valid and heard and things Can get better.
    The same applies for the SA situation. The creator goes out of her way to show that Hades, regardless of his relationship to Persephone, is genuinely the better person and Apollo has his obvious character faults regardless of who he's interacting with. Persephone also has to deal with her situation both herself and through her support network. The creator does not skim over the difficult reality nor offer a romantic relationship as the magic solution in lieu of a road of recovery. I can't speak to the creator's personal experience with Any of the material or themes presented in Lore Olympus, but she handles them with consideration and care.

      thank you so much for commenting!
      to reiterate, i personally find the tone of the story ambiguous. there's no denying that LO is a unique retelling of greek myth, but i struggle to see if it's meant to be primarily a character drama or a romance. this isn't to say a lighthearted story can't have have serious topics or that a dark story can't have moments of levity, my issue is that i can't tell which of the two it's supposed to be. as a result, when i get dramatic tonal shifts in the story, i feel like they clash and take me out of the story. i didn't critique the comic directly because i only read a small bit of it, so it'd be unfair to make a global assessment, but i'll use what i did read to illustrate my point here: during the trial, tensions are rising and the drama is snowballing, only to take a sudden halt as they call for a recess, where hades and persephone hang out for a few days and avoid thinking about the trial altogether. everything leading up to the trial made me believe it was a character drama, while the sudden stop for fluff tells me otherwise. the conflicting tone and somewhat unpredictable pacing makes it difficult for me to discern what the author wants out of the story. admittedly, it could be both, but i still have no way of knowing for sure, i'm just making assumptions. alternatively, that may be a case of my personal taste not aligning with the story, but since i don't typically read a lot of romance or character dramas, it's hard for me to tell.
      as for the topic of abuse and SA in stories, i did go over it very briefly since that wasn't the main focus of the video, but i agree that it's a subject that should be approached with a lot of depth and nuance, which i unfortunately couldn't really afford if i wanted to keep this video clear and concise.
      thank you again for sharing your thoughts, it was a pleasure to hear your point of view :D

      @@malacalico wonderful to hear yours as well 🤗 I think a reason maybe the tone isn't apparent (especially if we can only read one episode a week instead of binging the comic) is that it isn't trying to adhere to any particular genre but is meant to be more reflective of life and how it goes 🤷‍♀️ but that's my take. I can appreciate that the sudden shifts are jarring, especially when the tension has been built so high with situations like the trial that you want to know what happens and an in-story release from the tension, and not a tone shift to suddenly jolt you out of one tone into another. I've read the whole comic as available so far, so I can see how it's confusing and unsettling in that way. Thanks for the video and your response!

    If we took in the age gap issue into deeeep consideration I doubt that there would be any stories inspired by the Greek Mythology.
    Minthe is having her own redemption and healing arc now if you are curious.
    Thanks for reading my rant and my only request to you is to wait before the creator finishes his or her story.

      The age gap is only an issue because canonically Hades is a well seasoned adult who looks 40 while Persephone was only just entering adulthood and stopped aging at 19. Persephone’s age was also a huge problem for Hades in the beginning which almost made him not even persue her. Then the two actually met when Persephone was underaged and nude. That’s why their relationship is problematic and that’s only the beginning.

    For me Lore Olympus started out just fine and had potential but the author is becoming more unimaginative and the story more boring and draining she probably has a creative block and needs a break or something.
