I remember hearing him sing Jack Rance at the MET sometime in the 60's. He was great, but at that time there were soooo many great baritones in the world & particularly at the MET: Bastianini, MacNeil, Merrill, Sereni (in the 50's also Warren) & then the younger generation: Bruson, Cappucilli and Milnes. Today he would of course be primo baritono assoluto. The biggest problem though was that despite many offers, he refused to record & that probably hurt his career a lot.
