After figuring out how to play gwent...I'm addicted!

    • @99knives22

Fuck yes. I just bought the game not so long ago cuz of BeSt GaMe EvEr hype. First time playing it i didnt really get it. Few button map problems like triangle for attack instead of jumping on horse etc. But gwent. I just didnt get at all and tried to avoid it. Now that i know the ins and outs ive only been grinding for cards and shit. Not even for the cards tho. Just for a good match. The baron is the one that got me into it. Thnx to his spies i found value in the decoy card by taking his spies and playing it to draw an extra card. Then i found the decoy/healer combo AND the seige buff leader. Im at work atm and all i wanna do is play gwent.

Nilfgaard is pretty funny. Put the highest level spy on there side at the start of the round, scorch it before he decoys it, activate leader ability to take a card from the enemy discard pile which the spy will be there, and repeat till he runs out of cards on the first round.

I started out straight away playing with northern realms and slowly built the exact same deck with the same strategy. I barely played with the other factions because I really don't see how I can lose with this one considering you will always have more cards than the opponent, can clear any weather effect (i really only use the ability in the last round before i win if i need it) and use medics to bring back the opponent's spies if even needed since you can use decoy cards as well.
I rarely even lose the first round because i just spam the spies and build a large deck while the opponents just keeps throwing away his cards and finally stops because he leads something like 40 to 0. I can then either use a bitting frost card if a lot of cards are infantry or scorch even. So sometimes the opponent has 6-7 cards left after losing the first round while i still have 10-11 cards. Also when you win a round you get another card from your card pile.
I never lose and the games that are closer are so because i get really unlucky and start the game without spies or medics at all but the fact that if you push to win at any cost the first round you get another card that effectively gives you the advantage for round 2.

I run 5 blue stripes instead of the dragon hunters. But besides that our decks are the same. Have you ever thought of using bitter frost on your own blue stripes so they can't get scorched? It works pretty great and then your opponent will waste hella cards and you can simply use your commander ability to pull the bitter frost of last min

Before the DLC patches came out you could buy two, but since then an exploit was found where the merchants inventories reset back to 1.0.0's values, allowing players to buy another two, making 5 total.
It replicatable, I think... but hardly worth the effort. You don't need 5 to make Northern Realms incredibly broken

What I'm trying to say is that decoys are only really useful against Nilfgaard and you can beat it without them.

Yeah for me this strat and deck is the best in the game imo, if I get spies and medic in my initial draw I use the first round to bulk up and concede if it makes sense. However I like the dragon and scorch more than the horn to try and take the first round putting the pressure on them and then I use my 2 bond units alternately (leaving the medic or yen till needed) to try and draw a possible scorch from them. I rarely lose with this and I don't have the mys elf yet. Nice vid dude, whether it's great minds think alike or common sense it's good to see a like minded player

In the high stakes tourney I took out the 2nd to last guy with a scorch on the opening round. I played low cards at first I think just 1 spy and maybe a blue commando and he brought out horn and four cards with strength of 5 each (3 of them were the scoital smuggler) so right off the bat he’s got 40 points and I scorch (using the dragon vil ) all 4 of his cards down to zero and then he passes lol. The next round he was already down several cards and his horn and I only used 1 or 2. It was the most rewarding gwent game I ever played.

Thank you for making this guide. I have a fairly good understanding of the basics of the game, but I have difficulty balancing my decks for play against standard opponents (shopkeepers etc.) Obviously for quest players I save the game and then custom-build a deck to suit the opponent but I'm not about to create a custom deck for every John Doe merchant I run into, so this guide was very helpful for me, especially as I'm still collecting cards. Personally, I run a Foltest the Steel Forged for the free commander's horn, since, unless my hand dictates that I heavily reinforce a single line, I don't have as much difficulty playing around weather cards. On those occasions I do run into a problematic weather effect, not having a redundant commander's horn in my deck creates room for an extra Clear Weather. In any event, it works for me. thank you again for making this guide.

MrCodeslinger definitely going to check those out. I can't believe I mixed up Siegemaster and Steel-Forged. getting Siegemaster was a pain because of the sheer number of ten-strength cards in that nobleman's deck. leader weather effects came in handy there, no question.

About halfway through your video and the only thing I would change is 2 less heroes and 2 more Blue Stripes Commandos. If you can get all 5 of those bad boys out there plus a Commander's Horn, that's 200 points right there and it's always fun to pull off.

In basic fundamentals of any trading card game is to have advantage either on the field or in your hand either by stealing your opponents cards or pulling from the deck or graveyard and medics and spies do just that very efficiently.

I find the best way to play is to use the decoy/spy/medic game with clear weather and the siege boosting leader. You can use a counter weather to the opponent’s deck (fog for scoia’tael, frost for monsters, etc) and bring out your siege weapons against their weak lines.

I run almost the same setup, but instead of the dragon hunters I run 5 blue stripes commandos and dandelion because you will more consistently be able to draw multiples and they get insanely strong. To get around scorch I sometimes freeze them and play my leader later in the hand. Dandelion also almost completely replaces commander horns and is great against the high point value spies in nilfgaard

I use almost the same deck except that I stack biting frosts and have almost no melee cards. the very first time I played someone with a monster deck, it scared the crap out of me so from that point on I keep at least one biting frost in my hand at all times just in case.

  • @robertsmall1657

I removed just about all my immortal cards [not sure the name but they have the golden sunburst around the number. They can’t be doubled with horn. And although they can’t be scorched either you should almost always have some sort of doubled up card that would be higher than a 10 anyway so their scorch resistance is moot.. I am open to advice if someone disagrees with me.

I don't run any siege units other than Thaler and Dun Bannar Medic, sometimes Gaunter O'dimm, but usually only the tree O'dimm shadow. I do fun Poor Fucking infantry, Blue Stripes Commando and Dandelion. This is because Dandelion's effect is cumulative with commander's horn so playing doubles you close combat units if you the play Commander's Horn on the same row it doubles thwm all again so three Blue stripes Commando + Dandelion + Commander's Horn comes to 196 streangth for 5 cards. 64 per Blue Stripes Commando + 4 for Dandelion. Devastating.

I fracking love gwent. I hated it, until I failed the side quest. Then it really bugged me that it was failed....so much, I restarted after level 40 in the middle of blood and wine....I just had to play Gwent.
I didn't want to fail a quest, and I grumbled until I actually understood it. I now LOVE it, and play merchants all of the time to get better at it. I sometimes realize that I have a great card like scorch, and when I decide to play it, is the worse possible time, Like against the monster deck. They stack up then throw a random 6 card. Meanwhile, they have 3 of their 5 point cards on there....worse day ever for me. haha
