Don't know what the sky was like when you went through Royal Oak by the abandoned building, but in good conditions you can see right out to sea where the North York Moors drop down into the sea, presumably around Saltburn. You have to be quite high up to see this far - on flat land your horizon would be much closer because of the curvature of the earth's surface - being high up means you can see way over the other side of what would be your normal horizon.
The ponds that you passed are used for fishing, they made them deeper. It used to be all open and two ponds and a beck. Named Johnny Best beck. Was definitely a better walk when the bypass wasn't there. There are buildings all over, some in Brusselton wood. Belonged to the mine. If you had gone through the wood, at the bottom thats called Haggs lane. Just below High Thickley farm, the little villiage there is called Brusselton. Brusselton incline, you will still see the stones for the rail tracks also information on the walls.. Love walking around, been doing since i was little with my sister and dad, Im nearly 63y now.

Thanks for the comment. Always nice to get local knowledge of the area.
Hi I’m looking to relocate to this area from London for a quieter life. Can you recommend a good area to buy ?
Anywhere in County Durham i think you will find the people here are very welcoming and pleasant. Like everywhere there are not so nice people.
First comment. Also I don't know what the building is. but my family used to live there but still do.
Which building did/do they live in. I passed some lovely homes.
