You put a light spin on choking and called it gagging. He's too young to feed himself that kind of food without cutting it up into smaller pieces for him. I'm glad he was okay! He's adorable, btw.

Gagging is a normal reflex and demonstrates signs for healthy infant and toddler development in children, for them to explore this reflex and understand their bodies throughout their development and so on. Gagging is accompanied with face turning red, choking is not;and baby may turn blue or seem pale if he is choking. We should not be so quick or resort judging our perception of something if it isn’t yet fully understood, because more new parents need to know these important details, and is dangerous if they are mixing up information if they are wrongly informed.

I've done a first aid course on Infant inhalation distress and believe me that child did 3 things which are red flagged ...turning red/purple ,continuing to cough to dislodged food from wind pipe ,tears as respiratory issues progress ,and number one distress and panic as he looked at you his primary care giver to help !!!!!!!!!

I’m 1:55min in and I can’t watch anymore. “No shade” as they say, I know people have their own personal opinions but I have researched this recent trend of BLW till the cows came all the way back home and I still couldn’t go through with the above. We are so careful with having no choking hazards. We get on our hands and knees to observe dangers from their angles. We assess toys against our palms… yet give a strip of steak (something adults have to work through their own molars to tear enough to swallow) and watch baby who isn’t yet ready to consume large pieces gag and struggle. I truly don’t understand what led to this movement. The entire above scenario could be avoided if he were given shredded pieces if wanting him to taste it. He may still gag from the sensation of food on tongue, but I will never understand how this is beneficial. Again no judgment to this mom - you are doing what you have been convinced is correct. Edited to add - Okay I finished watching and just… 😒 Dad chiming in worried that son had tears. Mom trying to justify while deep down knowing that just made her heart stop as she jumped up in fight mode. Whyyyyy…. Just, why.

I can’t say this enough YOU NEED TEETH TO *THOROUGHLY* chew food! 8 month old babies don’t have a full set of (if any) teeth at all so giving him huge chunks of food he can’t chew will cause him A- to choke or B- to inhale food into the lungs because he’s trying to regurgitate it to avoid choking entirely. Not to mention large unchewed chunks of food can’t digest well…. Introduce solids at the appropriate time in an appropriate way my God!
This baby is gagging, not choking. He still was breathing the whole time: gagging. With that being said, even the gagging is so difficult to watch. I freak out when my baby gags at all, which is why I stopped BLW. Scares the shit out of me. I’d already have given the baby back blows, which is actually more dangerous when they’re not choking because it could cause them to choke.
