- In today's video we are talking about the different of being a gig worker and doing full time gig work or working that real job where you work with a company working a 8 hour or more schedule. Some days I think I would be happier going back to W2, then I remember what it’s like to have a boss & always having to request days off… I HATE that type stuff.
Yeah , I've had my own troubles with sick days and such it's a huge pain and even more of a stresser. Definitely hasn't helped me much
With my day job(truck driver) there are things I like and don't like. I'm not thrilled with having to get up at 3 or 4 in the morning and the long days can wear me down. But the positive is I get paid at that same rate whether I'm hooking up hoses at a site, sitting at a site on standby with nothing to do, or driving. With gig work the big advantage is flexibility, but the disadvantage is there's no guaranteed income, so there's more pressure to make correct decisions so I'm maximizing my income. Gig work is also limited with the amount of income that can be made. A gig worker making $30-$35/hr is in the top few %. Both the day job and gig work have their pluses and minuses as far as mental health.
I agree with you Kev. It's nice to see the pros and cons of both in this comment. Gig work does seem to have a cap , but then again if you do RUclips like me part time , that cap got bigger 😉🤣
I was making 23.17 an hour at the shipyard. It's laborious and back breaking work. 6AM - 3:30pm with just a 30min break.
I switch to gig work and make just as much if not more, just delivering food and packages.
I have freedom to take as many breaks as I want, I don't have to wake up at 4Am and fight for a parking spot at 5AM in the morning. I have more time for my family.
Yeah imma going to miss the healthcare n crap but my wife get healthcare and food snaps now. I'm happy and the kids are happy! Im not going to slaving away my life for an company who doesn't value my time
I can 100% see where you are coming from with this! Since switching over to being a gig worker as well now I enjoy everything you are saying. The best part is I can be there more for my son and have more time for me.
Gig work 100% 😀 I am a Mum of 1. Gig work means I can work during school times and over the weekend when my little guy is with his Dad. I can be there for all the events in his life, as well as sick days - both mine and his - with kids U just seem to always have someone sick lol. I don't have to explain to anyone why I can't come in today. To me that is everything.
As a mom of 1 as well , I can fully understand this. Do you worry about benefits or you go privately if you don't mind me asking ? I know in the US private health insurance apparently isn't the same as here though
@@DashWithAshinCanada I live in Australia, so we have public health here. As for sick leave and holiday pay, I just have to be smart and save. We also have government allowances for families, which is a regular payment each fortnight too :)

The first thing people will say when I do say a comment in pro for gig work is the money so it's nice to be able to say I don't need as much. I am fully away gig workers don't make as much some days but when it comes to mental health, money isn't my issue.

Big on self awareness and knowing what a person needs when it comes to mental health. Then aiming not to sacrifice your well being doing what you have to do.
I've done the 9-5 as a pharm tech and ran my own side gig as a digital marketer. Everything has its benefits and stressors when it comes to work and then including what goes down in life.
Like currently raising my 13 year old brother now and the clocking in clocking out for gig work has been amazing for me.

It has it's up and down days but overall I love being able to be self employed

Hey Ash! I also do gig work part time, i work tech support from home 3-11 pm mon-fri ! I do food deliveries around 2-3 days during lunch time before work and super sat and sunday. I only started a month ago but it fits me well! The amount of km i do per week doing deliveries is still lower than my previous job when I had to drive to the city 5 days a week 80km round trip, so not complaining too much! I started doing gig work like you to add to my savings for future plans and since I cannot do overtime at my full time job! But now that I see how easy and relaxed food delivery is… I’m not sure I would want to do overtime at my full time job! I’m mentally exhausted after my shift after speaking to customers all evening and explaining to a 90 years old customer how to change the tv source or connect their computer to wifi!!! Gig work for me is relaxing 😌 and like you said you don’t have to answer to anyone or constantly justify everything you do! I think we are all different though and we have to find whatever makes us happy! Thanks for your videos!! I always enjoy watching them hun !! Take care of yourself!
It's interesting to read that because you and I are in a similar line of work since I talk to clients all day long too. I find it far more draining then doing gig work. I haven't had any issues so far with gig work part time and I like being able to get out of the house. I'm happy you enjoy my content 🙂
Just like you mentioned in your video. There are some advantages in having a full time job such as getting a guaranteed paycheck no matter how much work you do. In addition, you get paid for sick and vacation time which is great. Unfortunately, that does not happen in gig work. Health insurance is another benefit from a full time job and this one is a necessity.
Absolutely. The reason I made this video was to talk a lot about the mental health issues that come with the 9-5 jobs compared to gig work but those things can totally trigger mental health issues if they aren't addressed. Especially the benefits part
Mentally? Gig. I started gig work as a side hustle but started "full time" after joining the great resignation because my last job sucked. Gig work has allowed me to not take a crap job while I'm looking for another 9 to 5 though.
That's the good part , you can make some money without having to rely on a specific job and hours. It's your hours which helps the mental aspect especially with day to day things.

Most of the negative comments are from ppl who are scared to rely on themselves. They have a false sense of security at a 9 - 5.🤷🏾♂️
Yeah I find some people can also be very old fashioned and it's giving a poor attitude to gig work.
@@DashWithAshinCanada True. I recently requested my birthday weekend off, and my job pretty much said either find someone to switch days with myself, or come to work. In that moment, I realized just how much control my job had over my OUTSIDE life.

It better if you find a good employer. Some employers give flexible days off. Some employers give bank days off. I think gig work is good if you are a student or as a second job. Some "gig" work I do is looking for investment opportunities. I think right now with the high interest rates. Buying fixed income and locking on those interest rates is good.
I think it depends on the person. For me I have a main job with an employer and I can't stand it anymore lol gig work , works differently for everyone and for some it's a great full time job. Many jobs don't even offer benefits or pension so gig work at least gives you more money if you pick the right orders
@@DashWithAshinCanada Most employers suck, but if you can manage to stick for a couple of years then save money, then you can invest that money and become independent. You won't be rich but you will be better off. Some gig works are great but I think it is better if you are self-employed and scalable like those app or game developers. 6 month development and then publish and the moneys comes in, even if it not so much , once publish it is there.

Short answer: yes long answer: hell yeah for the simple fact I can work whenever and choose how long I want to work but the best part of it all is I'm my own boss and I ain't got to worry about a manager or supervisor bitching and complaining. So, hell yeah being a gig worker is way better than a having a 9-5 job.
I can vouch for that. I think the independence of being self employed is great and the fact that you don't get any crap is awesome lol sometimes you do from the clients but we can't win them all

Best thing on gig working is supposed to be the flexibility in the hours, and no one to report to. Working for delivery app can be some time very very frustrating, and yes you work WHEN, WHERE and HOW you want, BUT you have to put the hours to make it worth it and this is where to me it is a very bad point comparatively to regular job. Regular job, you do the hours, and then you're at home. Gig apps is very unstable and sometime you will work 8 hours a day but some other days to meet your goals you will have to work10, 12, 15 hours...and it is easy to slide :) ....Today I have a regular job, well paid, and I have asked myself several times, ok should I quit my job and by on gig apps as a main stream of income...and just by doing some quick math to have the same amount of money I am making today (regular+partial time gig app), basically I would have to work at least 15 to 20 hours a day, 7 day/week...No way...Anyway my main point is that gig app can also lead to burn out since you have to put the hours, you are in control of almost nothing (how many other drivers? Slow restaurants?Bad customer/bad ratings?App crashes?etc, etc), and can be very exhausting...You can rely at least and in average on a 20$/h when you work full time but for how long, those days I can wait 1 hour to receive an order...
Oh yeah absolutely. With my main job I make a ton more money so I understand that's why I separated things to talk about the mental health aspect because for me the money. Not an issue but the mental health from working with a company for me is a whole different conversation. If someone's main focus is money , I agree , go with a company it makes the most sense. I am also lucky that RUclips pays me a little which also helps but most gig workers aren't RUclipsrs so they can't make additional which doesn't help.

Yeah it's way better for mental health , I wish the money was there in my market but I have better mental health and family life since

Why would you think a trucker would not like gig work? I’ve driven a truck over the road for 24 years I want out and I’m thinking gig work might be the ticket.
I don't think anything specifically to any job titles looking to switch it up. It's much harder to make the money doing deliveries depending on your market compared to truck driving which is a promised pay that's all.
In addition to that i never worked 9 to 5 in my life but hands down for 9 to5

Great question Shahed. I haven't seen that case here and since I do this part time I can't really say. Hopefully someone else will read this and have an answer. I know higher insurances are already pretty pricey .

How are you finding it so far ?
Gig work is the easiest, most convenient and flexible way to make money. Most markets run at least 20 hours per day. Others run 24 hours 7 days a week. It is not a big money job. I do not care what I see or read in social media $20 is a very good hourly rate in this business and after expenses its more like $16-17 hour. Many drivers run an active to clock time ratio of 70%. In plain terms they are not getting paid at all 30% of the time they are working. So you will not get rich and you will put significant mileage and wear on your vehicle. One big advantage that drivers often mention is not having to deal with a boss, coworkers or people in general. Other than time at the merchants waiting for orders, interaction with any other human is minimal. In today's age people really enjoy that privacy and alone time while still being able to make money.
Most of us have worked a w-2 so we know the drawbacks there. But the stability, growth opportunities and benefits are real pluses to standard work. I have two gig jobs that I work and it combines for 50 hours per week. One is being a gig driver and the other is completely different work. Fortunately I can do worknfor one gig while I wait for orders which is great for me. In either situation there are pluses and minuses but any employment has that dynamic.
Gig work is now becoming my full time job and I do see the perks in doing what I want, when I want. It is harder to force yourself up and out to work VS be scheduled since you know you need to be their on time for a schedule but I am basically just trying to make a schedule for myself. Throwing in being a RUclipsr and I think it's stable enough income for now but I love everything you have pointed out here, shows the pros and cons of everything.
I don't know what customer service job you have but that sounds way, way above average in terms of compensation!
Haha yes. I have worked for "third party" call centers before. This is a corporate one, worth billions so there is a lot being offered. At the third party ones , you get barely any benefits , no stocks or pension
my job is 7p-7a.. would never trade a job for gig work! i have a fit body and can relax 4 days out of the week!

Most of us don’t have the luxury of 3 on, 4 off. That’s normally only in the medical field.
I don’t enjoy my 8 to 5 job but I have to do it because there are bills to pay.
That's the sad reality of most of us now a days CJ. I know exactly that feeling from previous jobs.
I think it all depends. There are people who don't or can't handle running their own business. I don't consider any of these apps my business neither should anyone else since they will drop you just like that. Being an independent contractor has lots of pros. But at the same time you may have to work a lot to earn a lot too. W2 can be the same or even less hours or better everything else. It all depends what the work is and how it functions.
I agree with Jose. Gig work isn't something we can predict the outcome we have to go out and work our butts off. I also agree that any company rather it's a W2 or not can drop us like flies

Neither is better than the other if you have the option to do both. Work at 6am then after 2pm is delivery gig work. In no way, shape or form would I ever rely solely on gig work though. I was going to start my own business but I hate paying for overhead.

When you were on Rideshare Rodeo I guess he didn’t tell you how he co hosts a radio show on Driver Nation. Every Friday I’ve been joining Tom and Steve as we talk about truck drivers and gig work they do! Its a lot of fun! With the mental health aspect it’s how you make it. I stay connected to people through IG, Discord and some people even have my number. Keeping in touch with other gig workers is a great way to communicate and vent! Mr Flex does a live everyday as he works and gig workers go in there it’s what they call Drivers Lounge. Gary and I are part of a Fitbit community. And we talk all the time keeping each other motivated or vent! All these ways are examples of how the gig community can keep from being alone or isolated all the time. I just recently left my W2 job and it’s been great. Do you know when I got covid my job didn’t even call or text me to see how I was doing? Either f you doing a 1099 or a W2 you need to be happy what your doing. If your not move onto something else! Sorry this is so long! 😁🤗Look at Zack he is your stress reliever same idea! 👍
Haha I didn't know about that but that's cool! For me , my stress relief has always been the gym but with my main job , I find I can't keep up because mentally I can sometimes be too drained to want to train. As social as I am , I am also a quiet person so I rather "work it out" physically speaking haha. I do agree , community is key. I'm just looking at all the comments now even and I am in "aww" with how much people can relate

What's up Ash. I feel like gig working is the way to go, if you are willing to work for it. The con of gig work is the freedom, that freedom is so nice that sometimes you say nah I don't want to do it today and then it gets to the next day maybe tomorrow . But I'd gladly take that con. 😄. I think as soo. As that guy you mentioned goes back after a week of working that 9 to 5 he will quickly regret what he said. I worked the similar type job you do.
I agree , freedom has a price for it and it's the fact that if you don't put the work in you won't get the money. Price to pay for everything

Seems like the only jobs this world wants to give me are either part time with dumb hours or sweeping floors. I do Doordash because it's all I can do. Most jobs don't fit for my life because I live in my car. I wish I could get a small piece of land and start a small farm.
Yeah it's hard, even with backgrounds in certain work the reality right now is it's hard to get a more stable source of income. I am even afraid for the farming industry with how the climate change is going

Any work is real work and theres is no shame in working any job to help yourself and your family. So, when they say a real job , I am not sure what they mean. Do you want to be an entrepreneur or an employee is the better way to look at things. So many jobs can literally ruin your health and overall well being... my opinion folks. ,.. old rocker ,.. thanks.
Very true! I fear many don't understand how certain companies can cripple your mental health. Mine was on the verge of a melt down before I left.

I agree with you there but that's why I talked about the mental health part lol I own my own house , so I wouldn't have to worry about buying a house at least , but you're right , mentally if someone wanted to buy a house being a gig worker is not the solution

Remote jobs are becoming hard to find nowadays. Even though I do work from home I'm a hardwire set up so I can't move from my basement. Your husband and I are in similar shoes haha

Hey Ramzi. Appreciate the compliment. Honestly I've never rented from communauto myself but it's hard to say yes to pay more to do gig work if you aren't sure on your market. If your market isn't good , you'll pay more than you'll earn but of course I pay per month for my car to do deliveries so it's pretty much a normal expense.

Hey. So I wouldn't go through indeed. That's probably just advertising but no your SIN is not required for signing up with Uber. They will do a background check but you don't have to provide your SIN. Just google Uber Eats driver and you'll find the link you need
