Was worth sending it in just for video. I knew you did not have those chips in stock as I have watched and not seen you work on steamdecks before. I should have said the back light worked like that before without the display but I did not have a usb to video adapter to use to see if it still showed the screen - which it does. I thought maybe that burned chip was the cause of the issue. I do see it charging now so that must have been part of the charging circuit. But I sent it to the proper place to at least have the chip replaced!!

I remember hearing that some people have let their steam deck battery fully deplete, and when they turn it on it's a black screen. The solution was to enable battery storage mode in setup utility. It's worth a try.
Alot of steam deck users had the black screen issue - it seems like it's mostly a software issue that might be hard if at all possible to fix by yourself. Some managed to get it working by doing a factory reset or holding power button for 12sec for a hard reset, turning off screen dimming/sleep, entering battery storage mode, draining/reconnecting the battery, holding the "..." and volume down buttons until beep, waiting 5sec then pressing power etc. Maybe something from this list helps.

Beautiful work on that BGA IC :) I envy your steady hands…. If I tried to ‘tap’ that IC it would likely end up in the 9th dimension !
Maybe lower the airflow. Right settings on you device is critical.
A repair of a burnt chip by Alex is the best thing since sliced potato.
Did my first BGA chip repair a little less than a week ago. It was successful, but took me ages. I should have waited for this video to release 😅
Check capacitors surrounding the chip (SlimPort ANX7580) above the display connector.
Apart from working very nice with this kind of flux, cleaning takes only one cotton swab stick. I used quite a few kinds of flux and always had to use a lot of cotton swab sticks to be able to clean the mess. This flux takes one cotton swab stick to clean. It saves time. It may not seem to save much time but when you're already tired, you need to have the job done and you just clean the flux fast, it seems like life saver and you will thank the gods of flux for that.
I would check backlight circuitry. See if you can see a dim image of screen to confirm a possible backlight feed issue. Thanks for another great video Alex!
I've always said this. BGAs are great for people programming with em, however PCB designers/repairers absolutely hate them. I deal with a lot of arcade boards that have custom BGA chips on them and I can say I REALLY hate them; especially when you are dealing with ones that have hundreds of balls and are super custom.

most likely there is another problem. The chip replaced is a startup chip , without it the console would not start at all, so bc the console started, means that the chip autoreprogrammed and it works. An ITE chip is not related to video problems from what i know. Very similar to how a laptop works.

don't ITE chips sometimes require programming to work properly? Maybe in special cases like with the steam deck, the ITE chip needs special programming to display to the built-in screen. I would try to apply any firmware updates that may be available, especially if there's any marked as "EC firmware"
Sometimes they reprogram themselves, depends in the model.
Typically BGA chips will program themselves. The particular chip that he had to replace I believe was the Super IO chip, and typically those get their EC programming from the BIOS/UEFI chip.
@@TheResoluteHawk you're correct that chip is the Super IO, and while some will be programmed automatically from the BIOS/UEFI, many do not and must be programmed manually either before or after installation. Of course, I have no idea which one of these cases is true of the Steam Deck
@danandrei96 steam deck does it automatically, as shown in the video.
Programming these manually if needed is actually very difficult as there are no adapters yet available.

9:15 should pick up some Foam swabs for this part, they don't leave any fibers behind.

I'm not a microsoldering tech, but using a smartphones camera zoomed in to see better than my naked eye, I can inspect a board or micro components to see any damage.

I noticed some solder balls around the bga you wicked got wicked up in the process. I think you might need to reapply solder to those spots. At the bottom when you rotated to get the last bits of bga balls.
those are just test points. no component goes on them.
@@jg5170 He actually has a video where the same thing caused issues. Those points have blobs of solder for a reason.
For those that end up in a similar situation, know that Valve / Steamdeck have partnered with iFxit for replacement parts. That chip was blown/burned because of a reason, most likely to do with something the customer might not be aware of. But that they know what chip is burned leads me to believe that they might have been tampering with the SteamDeck. A lot of people upgrade their SSD in them, not following clear instructions, and some place a different SSD that can cause other parts of the system to overheat because the 2242 SSDs are cheaper than the 2230 models. So, all I am saying is that this can have a different cause of the failure.

It's that charging ic area iv measured hitting 95c when you plug in the charging cable. I missed mine with a nice thermal pad.
This chip is programmable. Its dump is 128KB. Is there a valid dump uploaded?
what was the cause of the chip blowing could it be the same reason for the screen
I think when it burnt out it shorted out the screen.
Something about playing while charging can overload the chip

I just happened to me today! I bought a magnetic adapter so plug and unplug my SD easily and it was working just fine until y moved the cable a little bit and BOOM: It suddenly turned off and it won't charge or turn on anymore, the charging led was dead as well. I tried everything, i pressed the power button like a minute and nothing. Then i became desperate and opened it. I unplugged the battery from the motherboard, then plugged in again and the charging led turned on like for a second. Still no response. Did it a couple of times more and the SD revived completely. Now it's working like never happened. I think i was lucky. What do you think it could be the problem?
Thank you for making the videos. I want to see the backside of the chip to see all of the balls. Does the chip already have solder/balls applied? Or did he apply solder without showing it in the video? He always shows applying solder before attaching the new chip, but did not on this video and I don't understand why.

have you encountered anyone who had an issue with their Steam deck OLED version where the WIFI ic gets too hot and the battery doesn't charge? (the deck still turns on but is not charging)

My girlfriend had a manic episode and decided to punch my gpu a few times while in the system which has resulted in a slight bend. I can get the gpu to run sometimes maybe for 2 hour before I get a " VIDEO TDR FAILURE

maybe when this " ite it5570vg-128" is shorted 5v is blown some fuse that why no image on the matrix or the screen ? missing 5 v ?
if it were missing 5v, a fair number of things wouldn't fire up [ie usb-c port would not be powering the dp-altmode capable usb-c hub, possibly the same for the steamdeck's internal controller] .. edp displays mostly run at 3.3v and same result if that were missing as well.. add to that the EC which is what the it5570vg is, it's not a device that generates voltages that the whole system uses.. it tells the whole thing how to fire up and run at all via the bios firmware
Unplug the HDMI converter and hold down the power for 8 seconds, wait 2 seconds then tap the power and wait 30.

After 10 back and forth emails and wanting to talk on the phone I decided to just deal with it myself. I am the 2nd owner of the unit and figured I would just deal with it myself as I only have so much patience.
If you don't reapply the third screw holding down the heat sink on the main apu die, you can get video errors. Ask me how I know... :| I don't think that is what is happening here though, because it wouldn't be working on the monitor output.

What’s the purpose of tapping/pushing on the chip after it’s moved itself into position? Is that just to verify that it has attached to the pads, or does that improve the connection in some way?
Its just to check if its connected properly to the board.
THe surface tension of the liquid solder will pull the chip into alignment. He is just making sure that all the solder reached the liquid phase.

At first I thought the problem was with the LCD itself. But it replacement did not help in any way.
@@GhostRooter I also replaced the screen and it didn’t fix it. I replaced the main board and it fixed it. It’s a board issue but I couldn’t find any faults (I’m also not @NorthridgeFix 😂

IT5570vg-128 is kind of an EC chip and needs to be programmed. Maybe the factory program is not what it gotta be.
What was the chip that was replaced ? If it was a microcontroller it probably needs firmware on it to run.
bump this, a quick google search comes back with cross-refrence IT8390 decription "A highly integrated embedded controller with system functions suitable for mobile system applications."
edit, also; The IT8390 directly interfaces to the eSPI/LPC bus and provides ACPI embedded controller function, keyboard controller (KBC) and matrix scan, PWM and ADC for hardware monitor, PS/2 interface for external keyboard/mouse devices, BRAM, CIR and system wake up functions for system power management.
Definitely needs firmware to function properly.

Now the question becomes does Valve provide that firmware somewhere, and how do you flash firmware onto it.
EDIT: Also, it's still a question of whether the place the customer got the chip from has already programmed it for the Steam Deck. It's possible it already has the correct firmware, but there's another problem.

Seems like the customer knew a decent amount on device repair but gave up when seeing that the chip was BGA and sent it to you
I know my limits on repairs..
I am not confident enough to do BGA soldering
Use a dead or old computer motherboard for practice
Remember even mistakes & faults are part of learning
I was practicing on some surface mount training pcb, where I burned the surface mount transistors & traces
this taught me to use the right tools, like tweezers, 25W iron stick, flux, the right tip....
