I just can't believe the number of recording artists who were recording laura Nyro songs well of course I just found about her last summer 2020 well anyway Marva really did her take on these amazing vocals .
This was written by Laura Nyro, who was a great singer and songwriter in her own right. There's also the hit version by The Fifth Dimension. They're all great but Laura's original must be heard!!! It's beautiful!
Stax actually left this in their vault for 30 years?? Shame on you Stax! (Assuming the Staple Singers wanted it released) I wonder if Laura ever got a chance to hear their take on her classic hit?
It's on two, Joe- Sassafras and Moonshine the songs of Laura Nyro on ACE and 500 Volts of Stax Unreleased Tracks from the Golden Era of Soul. It was originally cut for one of the Staples albums but Stax didn't release it. It rocks!!
This version is better than the Fifth Demension version because the Staple Singers had more grit and soul than the Fifth Dimension, and that works better for this song.
Laura Nyro would sometimes create words to convey a certain mood in her songs. Surry means something like C'mon down. Surry has apparently now become part of 21st Century slang. Another word she created was Tendaberry, for her LP and title song 'New York Tendaberry'.
The Staple Singer's were soul personified. Prop's to songwriting extraordinaire Laura Nyro!
Only the Staple Singers could remake a classic song like this!!
Staples and Nyro. Beautiful music!
You OUGHT TO come on, no doubt! Nothing so sweet...nothing so GOOD!!
SO fine!!!
Perfect. Doing justice to this Laura Nyro classic.
Wow this is soulful. Fantastic version. I bet Laura loved it.
LORD love us the Staple family!!!!!
My favorite version
The Staple Singers were out a sight!!! Really Fine....Really.
I had no idea!! It's wonderful!!
Wow this is great. A very Stoned Soul Picnic! Staples doing it right!

Who's Marva? The lady singing lead on this cover is Mavis Staples..
The souls of black folk!
I always love that passage @1:52 then the modulation and back to the original. That was really genius of Laura
I hate to be crude but that gets me right in the nuts. Superb writing.
@@Ystadcop today's singers-songwriters don't know how to compose like this anymore.
It's that soul!
Fantastic, wonderful, so fun to listen to. Some covers of Laura Nyro's works fall flat but not this one. It's great!
I like this as much as the 5th Dimension version. Why was it kept in the vaults for so long?

It rocks!!
Bad move by Stax. Just as good as I'll Take You There and Come Go With Me.
LOVE IT !!!
Hey, is this on an album somewhere? So good!
It's on a CD called Sassafrass and Moonshine: the Songs Of Laura Nyro. Lots of other great Nyro songs by other artists on there, too.
come along sweet trains of love. my god. where is she.
I didn't know!!!! Yazzzzzzz thanks for sharing
Stax kept this hidden for years. WHAT is the matter with STAX??????????
I also like The Supremes and Four Tops version
YES! OG !
C'mon & surry on sweet trains of thought.....
First time I heard their version; but I liked the 5th Dimensions version just a little better!!!
This version is better than the Fifth Demension version because the Staple Singers had more grit and soul than the Fifth Dimension, and that works better for this song.
good but not better! GOD BLESS!!!
Love this version. You can feel the soul in it a bit more. ☺️
I like them both
It was one of few soul songs by 5th dimension.
Perhaps a bit more funky, but the Fifth Dimension made it popular. Laura Nyro's original is a gem. They were/are all excellent versions.
It seems like this song could have been better fit for staples thqn 5th dimensi9n.
Did Stax hide this to benefit the 5th Dimension???????
what does it mean surry ???

“Slide on down”
I like the 5th dimension version better.
