    Very interesting. Have been going through quite a few other scholarly studies of the incident to gain more perspective and understanding. They all carry logical clarification and reasoning. For sunnis the most widely accepted is in Bukhari where the incident speaks of a communcal prostration at end of surah Najm along with the polytheists, of the 'inserted' verses themselves is not mentioned. At-Tabari who compiles all weak and strong isnad for purposes of scholarly study* (disclaimer) has the incident recorded as two other versions.
    1. Shaytan interjects by shouting his additional verses concerning the 3 pagan deities and refers to them as some celestial gharaniq (we can also agree that in ancient times powerful jinn could influence the course of civilization when they engage in shirk, so this may be such a case) and shaytaan attempts to seduce the pagans into thinking that it would still be acceptable to hold on to these deities. We should not forget that the Surah Najm mentions the star of Sirius which was a HUGELY significant celestial body in ancient world and deified by many civilizations before. Thus the pagans would take the mention of this star, and the mention of the 3 gods of theirs as an acknowledgement of their mystic capacity / super natural existence.
    2. Shaytaan interjecting by way of mimicking Jibreel a.s and the Prophet s.a.w mistaking this whisper as being the words of Jibril and actually uttering them. Now, the explanations both hold water - however the case of infallibility is somewhat vague in the sense, messengers do not intent to transgress or sin but they can faulter because this is a human attribute. Each time one does so, they immediately become aware of this, repent and not repeat. There are some examples of this beginning with Adam a.s and continuously Mussa, Yunus.. etc so this perspective does hold water especially in the notion that, The Prophet immediately admitting and accepting this error reflects his ever honest character and Allah's s.w promise to preserve the purity of the recorded laws /quran and referring to surah Hajj v 52 and 53.
    Q. If we are to take the prophets as role models and hold on to the belief that they are completely infallible then this would be an impossible undertaking and so a meaningless statement to make?
    Q. If we accept version 2, where the prophet did not utter the verses but shaytaan did and the pagans did hear it (in context of surah hajj 52/53 meaning that he caused them to understand the mentioning of the 3 pagan deities to be an acknowledgement of their existence) then there again is no harm done if you accept this version too - rather than accepting that the whole incident is a fabrication?
    Q. Does not the fact that previous messages have been tampered and manipulated so much to deviate the people whom clear guidance was brought to, attest to the possibility that Shaytaan does indeed interject at times by manipulating the interpretation or causing ones understanding of the law to be other than, what it was initially intended to be - albeit not interjecting by making a prophet utter wrong words. This notion would give the second version more weight and lesser weight to the last version.
    May Allah s.w continue to bless your work and of other scholars striving to provide clarity and guidance in the midst of misinformation and deviation. Ameen.

      @Thaqlain  2 года назад +5

      JazakAllah. The possibility of Shaytaan hindering the works of humans is a thing proven by the Quran. But when it comes to the greatest Prophet and Messenger of Allah, this possibility is not just against his stature but also puts a question mark on the entire divine mission.

      The true fitna is created by you people by not following what is haqq. You guys choose to follow bateel and create sects in Islam. If following the truth is creating sectarianism, so be it. Deuteronomy 13:1-5
    “If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, 2 and the sign or wonder that he tells you comes to pass, and if he says, ‘Let us go after other gods,’ which you have not known, ‘and let us serve them,’ 3 you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. For the LORD your God is testing you, to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 4 You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and hold fast to him. 5 But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has taught rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you out of the house of slavery, to make you leave the way in which the LORD your God commanded you to walk. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.
    Deuteronomy 18:20-22
